Republican presidential candidate John McCain suspects the war in Iraq will be over by 2013.
"By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won," said McCain.
Despite the fact that he predicts the war will "be won" in five years, McCain denies any claims that he has drawn up a timetable for full-scale troop withdrawal.
"It's not a timetable; it's victory. It's victory, which I have always predicted. I didn't know when we were going to win World War II; I just knew we were going to win," said McCain during his speech in Columbus, Ohio.
There you have it: John McCain JUST KNOWS the U.S is going to win the war in Iraq. He might not know how, but he just knows. One of the journalists who attended McCain's speech suggested he took listeners on a "magic carpet ride" to the future.
With the number of U.S casualties increasing, and the faltering economy in mind, occupying Iraq for an additional five years is a scary thought. But there are other underlying issues in McCain's statements.
First off, John McCain's response to reporters makes no sense at all. If he has not at least created a game plan for the Iraq War, what is the premise for him saying the war will end by 2013? Does he just assume things in the Middle East will smooth over by the end of his presidential term (if he gets elected)? Surely, he must have some sort of "timetable" set if he has the ability to announce a year as to when Americans can expect their sons and daughters to return from the war.
Denying that he has a game plan probably hurts him more than helps him. It's understandable that McCain likes to stick to his guns. In fact, he would be accused of hypocrisy if he didn't stand by his word. In his campaign during the primaries, McCain criticized former Republican rival Mitt Romney for hinting at a timetable for troop withdrawal. But since when is it a bad thing to have a timetable? Is the electorate keen on staying in Iraq for years to come?
The Republicans claim they are tough on national security, and that is precisely why they have kept U.S troops in Iraq. However, keeping troops in the Middle East has not secured the U.S at all. McCain's Democratic rival Barack Obama said the war has failed to secure America since it has made the U.S military weak and vulnerable to any potential attack made by other Middle Eastern countries such as Iran.
Cenk makes a good point about McCain's current comments in the following clip:
Nonetheless, it's comforting to know one of the candidates for presidency makes predictions with no real premise or plan.

1. You're right as usual Ana. Sadly, facts, logic and reason won't work against many of the dopes who'll respond with the latest Fox News/Limbaugh talking points.
After all, it seems like 75% of AOL commenters comprise that 20 something percent of people who believe against all evidence to the contrary that Bush is a good president (you know, in spite of our tanking economy, insane gas prices, the home crisis, tripled national debt and a dollar that's worth 40% less since 2000).

2. Cenk has gone to the bench for help. But it is a better subject than dancing bears or baseball.
He was asked to give his thoughts and aspirations on where he thought America would be in five years under his leadership - present some CONTEXT. He didn't just throw out the 2013 number (which by the way, is what Hillary and Barack said many times during the debates).
The real goal would be sooner. As we squeeze Mosul down like a wet dish rag and deny Al-Q and the insurgents any refuge, things will keep improving. He won't say it because all of you will just mark a date to set in on him as a timetable. We had our asses kicked time and again in the first two years of WWII - maybe we should have just quit right after Midway and Guadalcanal because it was hard. Right?
"With the number of U.S casualties increasing", where have you been? They have shown an uptick as the fighting in Mosul has increased and the Sadr City fight has progressed - when you engage the enemy you take losses. Honor them for the fight and not by running away.
At least he laid out some real plans, not just "they suck and we don't suck" as much speeches. Your Democratic Congress can take on some of the blame for current conditions as well.

3. Hey Young Turd...Have you noticed that AOL has you way at the bottom of the news page now? Still not in the toilet where a young turd belongs.

4. "It's not a timetable; it's victory. It's victory, which I have always predicted. I didn't know when we were going to win World War II; I just knew we were going to win"
Not bad for a 5 year old kid to predict the outcome of the war. Hmmmm ... I wonder what his prediction was for Vietnam?? Do you think he predicted a loss?? Oh well, 1 out of 2.
And now he's predicting a timetable, that's not really a timetable - ???. He learn that from Kerry ... or Lieberman??
If you work it backwards ... in the McCain war, he says most troops will be home come 2013. OK ... it'll take 2 years to get most of the troops and large equipment physically out of their country and back home.So we're at 2011.
But it'll take a year of relative peace before the McCain's war was finally declared safe enough to pull out. Now, we're at 2010.
And it will take a year for the generals on the ground (aren't there any in the air??) to declare victory in McCain's war. So we're at 2009.
Is that January 2009?? Maybe declare victory on January 20th??
It'll take at least 6 months of looking at all the numbers to "officially" declare victory, so that gets us to July 20, 2008 as the day the Bush guys say "hey, looks like we won 'cause John said so ... huh?? Let's declare victory!!"
I sure hope the white house kept the "mission accomplished" banner.

5. This post only makes sense if:
1) The context of McCain's statements are totally ignored.
and
2) You believe that it's reasonable to expect someone to divulge a game plan for winning a war to a bunch of reporters.
Then, of course, this goes totally unchallenged:
"McCain's Democratic rival Barack Obama said the war has failed to secure America since it has made the U.S military weak and vulnerable to any potential attack made by other Middle Eastern countries such as Iran."

6. By 2013 McCain wouldn't have to worry about Iraq anymore, because he would have us stuck in another ridiculous war with Iran. And besides, didn't he say that he would stay in Iraq for 100 years? 95 years seems like a big difference...
Howsa 'bout get some civil liberties back?

I guess that he doesn't have much of a chance anymore, though. Let's go with the next best one (It's a close second, though)

7. Hey Eric, The bloggers are listed in alphabetical order...so since "The Young Turks" start with a "T" they're last on the list...which sort of makes you look like an idiot for thinking the order is based on anything other than that.

8. don't worry, the media says McCain forgot about the 100 years war he wanted, so it's not flip flopping, it's just another senior moment...good ole mccain, he would never flip flop, he's just too much of a maverick to contradict himself...he must have planned to get out in 2013, and lied about, i mean told us that 100 years was the number...it was all part of his plan, which is all for the greater good...yes, the greater good

9. Obama plans on surrending, so war will be over soon. In a speech before the Council on Foreign Relations, 11/22/05, Obama said "we need to focus our attention on how to reduce the U.S Military footprint in Iraq. Notice I say "reduce" and not fully withdraw." This is nothing more than McCain said. Obama knows it would be disaster to withdraw asap from Iraq and so did the people he was speaking to at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Obama said what McCain just said.
Obama family tree. Shake it and what falls out, Muslims. Demoocrat Party wants America to forget Obama's Muslim connections. But how do you forget family, and half of Obama's family is Muslim.Obama's 2 fathers and their families are Muslim, and remember, "blood is thicker than water"
Obama's Muslim connection will sink him in November.
57 States-a mistake by Obama?????? " Every year since 1999, the Organization of the Islamic Conference representing the 57 Islamic States...."(source)
from the Humanistic and Ethical Union.
Is this where Obama got his 57 States-the 57 Islamic States??? Dan Quayle made a spelling mistake when he ran for Vice President and Democrats made fun of him. Obama's 57 States-mistake or reference to 57 Islamic States??

10. McCain is a super hawk. If elected, we can expect more war.
Obama is a naive kid. If elected, we can expect him to be making "corrections" to his statements to foreign governments on a daily basis. Actually, he is already doing that with respect to his stupid, bigoted remarks he is making on the campaign trail.
The military will not listen to Obama - he just does not have the credentials.
FLASH! OBAMA USES SEXIST REMARK TO FEMALE REPORTER! CHECK OUT UTUBE
We are finally getting to know the real Obama.
He disrespected Clinton during the NH debate. Some credit her surprise upset in that primary to his sexist attitude.
Now, while ignoring a female reporter's question about working class American jobs, he called her "sweetie", the linguistic equivalent to calling an African American "boy".
Given his adulation of hate mongering Reverend Wright, and his sneering remarks about the working class, an their pro gun, pro religion, anti illegal immigration and anti free trade positions, few remain who have not been subject to his scorn.
No matter how hard the media is trying to undermine the democratic process by slanting the news for Obama and pretending he is already the nominee, he is not electable.

Ana got it right-only by accident does she get it right. Ana does the same as Cenk, sort of leaves out important parts of stories that she does not want to talk about. The part that is taught in Journalistic Ethics 101.

12. What Democrat beanhead thought up an Obama-Clinton ticket.
Oh, I can see Michele Obama and Hillary Clinton having a friendly chat over tea and Hussein Obama and Bill Clinton playing golf together after the troops come home. In 2 months Obama will have Bill Clinton banned from the White House and Michele and Hillary having a cat fight on the front lawn of the White House.

13. Robert Okane : Shame on you! Repeating that old canard about Quale can't spell. I would expect that of Cerk or Captain Negative but you? The teachers at the New Jersey middle school chose the English variation - potatoe - instead of the American variation - potato. Under the rules, Quale was required to accept the English variation as correct and call the American variation incorrect. Also, he was not running for vice-president, he was the vice-prsident.

14. Hey, longwalker, thanks for the mention. BTW, it is, "Q-U-A-Y-L-E."
You're a hoot! Okane is a crazy, paranoid, hoot! I wonder what would fall out if we shook your family trees.
Okane writes..."At least he laid out some real plans, not just "they suck and we don't suck" as much speeches."

McCain has no, "plan." He has a fantasy! Unless his "plan" is to nuke the Middle East!
Only an idiot would fall for that McCain bullshit. I'll bet it doesn't even pass longwalker's infamous, "smell test."
