For at least twenty years conservative hacks have been coming on TV, yelling and screaming with no substance -- and finally Chris Matthews couldn't take it anymore. He just annihilated this right-wing talk show host on national television. Watch it here:
The full seven minute embarrassing interview can be seen here. I have criticized Matthews plenty in the past. I think he's too chummy with power and often buys into Republican talking points without really challenging their core assumptions. But in this one shining moment, he wiped all that way. If he could challenge the assumptions of the right and the left like this night in and night out, then his show would truly be worth watching.
Young Turks on You Tube and Watch the Whole Show Here
PS -- Small note of caution for Matthews. he can't let this develop into a shtick. What he did great here wasn't asking the same question 28 times; it was challenging the underlying talking point. The point isn't to embarrass people on national TV, the point is to get beyond the talking points and get to the substance of what they are saying.

46. So Dave... When Obama gets elected, you're saying that somehow he will take this country to a lower point that GW has already taken us... FAT CHANCE.
America wins when its voters get hip to the bullshit. Warmongering and wedge issues like abortion and gay marriage are only used to get uneducated morons (who know NOTHING about how the world or even their own country works) to the polls.
Our country is losing its greatness and luckily I think most of the idiots that voted for GW twice are beginning to realize we need to go in a different direction. Maybe a direction where people that need help get help instead of billionaires getting tax breaks and corporate welfare. Not to mention the largest transfer of $$$$ in U.S history. $$$$ is taken from all of us taxpayers and transfered to the billionaires who own companies like Halliburton and Blackwater. What does the administration call it...oh yeah... "The Iraq War" or "The War on Terror".
It is BULLSHIT and it amazes me how even educated people get caught up in it and ask for a second or third helping.

47. Yikes. Could we please have some civil discourse on both sides of the issue.
Dear Chris Matthews and Kevin James:
Here, for BOTH of you, is the answer to the question. This what Chamberlain DID. He failed England.
He was naive and believed the words of Hitler and Mussolini. He met with both Hitler and Mussolini and came home declaring Peace in our TIME. He thought he could negotiate with thugs. He signed the MUNICH pact, he trusted Hitler to not invade Poland. He trusted Mussolini to stay out of the Spanish Civil War and not invade anymore countries (although he had already conquered Ethiopia).
Both Hitler and Mussolini were...BAD BOYS! The best indicator of future behavior,is past behavior. This is true in marriage, in friendships, in the business world and among Nations. Logic, common sense coupled with strenght and purpose, fueled by compassion and fairness are required for Leaders. Chamberlain was not a bad man. He was a weak man. Predators, like Hitler, Mussolini, Osama Bin Laden, The nut case leaders of Iran, North Korea...Hamas. dictators in the world, all feed on the weakness of others. That includes their OWN people, their neighbors and other Nations. Their promises are empty. Power trumps all.
Don't confuse Diplomacy with Appeasment.
Appeasement doesn't work. Negotiation will work. Consequences, when tied to agreements can work - if enforced. Diplomacy is always the first line of defense. Appeasement never is. At the end of the day, the strong prevail. Thats why America needs a strong leader. Now go figure out who that is, for you..with your vote. Knock off the name calling and screaming. All of you.

48. I could care less about Chrs Matthews destroying a right-wing hack on TV, the way he has tried to destroy Hillary. All of Hillary's supporters need to boycott MSNBC, especially Chris Matthews. We all know that the meda has given Obama a free ride, when he made the statement in Oregon that he had travel all over 57 states, it was not coveraged by the media, everything he say or do is played down by the media. In November I'm going to give Obama a free ride.

49. I have watched Chris Mathews evolve from a TV News show host into a cartoon character. The old Saturday night live satirical exaggerations of Chris Mathews have been usurped by a more bazaar real version. Chris doesn’t wait for answers when interviewing, he simple asks the question, answers it, and dares the guest to contradict his sagacity. His political proclivity is even more predictable then his demeanor. My three suggestions for Chris would be:
1. Change the title of his show to “Oddball”
2. Dress in a Clown outfit with a mock base ball bat to hit the guests when they try to respond to his question/answer monologues.
3. Bring back “White-fang” and Black-tooth” from the old Soupy Sales show for more serious interludes.

51. OBAMA'S TRUE ISLAMIC NATURE HAS COME OUT..
ISN'T IT FUNNY THAT OBAMA WOULD MAKE A STATEMENT WHERE HE SAID THERE ARE 57 STATES.... WHEN INFACT THAT IS THE EXACT NUMBER OF ISLAMIC (STATES OR COUNTRIES) 57 OF THEM..
Organisation of the Islamic Conference
The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is an international organization with a permanent delegation to the United Nations. It groups 57 nations, most of which are Islamic, from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Caucasus, Balkan, Southeast Asia, South Asia and South America. The official languages of the organization are Arabic, English and French.
MAKES YOU WONDER WHY OBAMA SAID THEIR ARE 57 STATES HUMMM...

This would actually be laughable at best, unfortunately it is nothing but pathetic when you realize all that this current administration has given away and destroyed for the sole purpose of having their little war in Iraq, instead of staying if Afghanistan!
George W. Bush has given away our integrity, our troops (actually has allowed them to be killed), our economy and if that were not enough for him he and his ill-advised immoral administration have done everything possible to destroy our Constitution. What breaks my heart is realizing that too many of our citizens such as the person posting the remark above, are not able to recognize a criminal when they see one that has lied to them, used them and robbed from them.

54. James did look ignorant. But his inability to come up with the historical facts is his problem, not Bush's. Bush was right: history is replete with people patting themselves on the back for their diplomatic efforts only to see their adversaries turning some poor country into a living hell. The book on diplomatic success stories is a very thin volume. Does the Young Turk think all those countries talking to Hitler in the late 30's accomplished anything? If history has taught us anything, it is that you use your common sense when dealing with neophyte Hitler-types. And your good common sense should lead you to do the right thing: destroy them without mercy.

55. why do real Americans reject liberalism, because we stand for God,Country, tradition, and the American way. Liberals stand for abortion, gay rights,ACLU,cottling terrorists, stabbing our military in the back, burning the flag, homosexual marriage, Godlesness, stick up for dictators, murderes, lying, punishing people who work hard and prosper by raising their taxes, distribution of wealth to lazy welfare cheats etc.

Very good posts, but you do not really think some of the writers here are going to read what Russia has to say about Obama.
Most of them are still counting on their fingers and toes over the 57 state "mistake" by Obama
Then many talk like historians over this Matthews show and Neville. Watch the Jay Leno show when Jay goes into the streets and asks simple questions about US History to the people walking the streets. They get over 70% wrong and some people here talk like they know what a Neville is?
Democrats pissing over the war in Afgan and Iraq that they approved of.
Democrats have short memory of Wilson dragging USA into WW1
FDR getting USA into WW2 with his Lend Lease Act and supplied millions of dollars of arms to Russia and was about to do the same with China which got USA into WW2 when the majority of US citizens wanted no part of another war.
Or Truman with his Truman Doctrine and getting USA into a Civil War in Korea to stop Communism.
Or JFK and LBJ lies getting USA sucked into another civil war in Vietnam, which Truman also sent arms into Viet for the French to stop Communism.
Or the covert military assistance Carter gave to Afgan BEFORE Russia invaded.
Or the covert arms deals Clinton did in supplying arms to the Muslims in the Balkans where there was a UN Resolution against doing that.
Just little old bloody hands the Democrats have over the years that the Democrats are somehow forgetting that part of history.
Add up the Dead American soldiers from those 4 wars-what is that, over 100,000 US Troops in Democrat Wars in less than 100 years. Liberal fascists want to rewrite history and leave those chapters out.
robert okane at 2:57PM on May 18th 2008
57. In response to that ignoramus Patty, our troops are not being allowed to be killed, quite the opposite they are killing the enemy, they are professionals and are highly trained and motivated, how do you explain those who are wounded and want to return to the battlfield? You dont understand because you as a liberal hate the military and would never put on the uniform of this great country, you are the party of appeasement, and if President Bush is a criminal as you say, convict him! Your so full of hatred for our president you think of him as a bigger threat than the terrorist thugs at Gitmo who would cut your throat in a split second and think nothing of murdering your whole family

58. The Chris Mathews/Keith Olbermann news shows are typical of MSNBC cable news coverage.
We have all watched Chris Mathews evolve from a TV News show host into a cartoon character. The old Saturday night live satirical exaggerations of Chris Mathews have been usurped by a more bazaar real version. Chris doesn’t wait for answers when interviewing, he simple asks the question, answers it, and dares the guest to contradict his sagacity. 1. Change the title of the Chris Mathews show to ‘Oddball’
2. Dress Chris in a Clown outfit with a mock base ball bat to hit the guests when they try to respond to his question/answer monologues.
3. Bring back some talking puppets from the ‘Sesame Street’ show for more serious interludes.
The Kieth Olbermann News show (Countdown), just demonstrates to what extent a Major News media outlet will go to over take competitors.
MSNBC in its attempts to catch up to the ratings war with the other Cable News outlets spawned the Kieth Olbermann News Show. We all thought that after the “Jerry Springer” show was removed from the TV Media wasteland, we would be free of low brow viewing. Congratulations MSNBC, you have replaced Jerry’s sensual low standards with your own nightly “Countdown” of intellectual baseness.

59. Uh, Mike G - the Democrats just picked up three House seats in special elections in GOP districts.
I believe it is YOUR party that is currently being rejected, friend. And you can thank Bush for destroying the Republican party. Even neocon congressman Tom Tancredo says Bush's biggest accomplishment will be leaving the Republican party in ruin.
David S. at 4:30PM on May 18th 2008
60. Tampa Tony - You seem to buy into every nearly every talking point on the left. FYI: We have a $3 Trillion dollar budget and $80-100 Billion a year goes into the Iraq war. And some of that goes to military salaries and US defense contractors employing US citizens.
If you worked for Halliburton, how much money would you want to make annually for driving a truck with people shooting at you and trying to blow you up?
I doubt anything will stop you from spouting cliches like "warmongering" and "wedge issues". Maybe we should have just let Saddam, Uday and Cusay rape, pillage, torture, murder more on top of the 600,000 already confirmed dead in mass graves (with one Iraqi official sugesting the real number is as high as 2 million.) Hey, great idea. No skin off your nose.
And if Obama is really elected, get ready for the answer to the question "What's the worst that can possibly happen?". I think we're going to find out. Enjoy that sunshine Big guy. At least you won't have to worry about heating your house when #2 oil is $10 a gallon and Congress continues to sit on their hands. And you Democrats can blame that calamity and every other bad thing that happens for the next 25 years on GW Bush. Convenient.
