For at least twenty years conservative hacks have been coming on TV, yelling and screaming with no substance -- and finally Chris Matthews couldn't take it anymore. He just annihilated this right-wing talk show host on national television. Watch it here:
The full seven minute embarrassing interview can be seen here. I have criticized Matthews plenty in the past. I think he's too chummy with power and often buys into Republican talking points without really challenging their core assumptions. But in this one shining moment, he wiped all that way. If he could challenge the assumptions of the right and the left like this night in and night out, then his show would truly be worth watching.
Young Turks on You Tube and Watch the Whole Show Here
PS -- Small note of caution for Matthews. he can't let this develop into a shtick. What he did great here wasn't asking the same question 28 times; it was challenging the underlying talking point. The point isn't to embarrass people on national TV, the point is to get beyond the talking points and get to the substance of what they are saying.

91. IMO - Your post (#86) is an "orgy" of confusion. Exactly which "crap" that Rush and others mentioned above espouse are Americans sick of? Freedom? Liberty? Strong national defense? Enforcing the borders? Low taxes? Fiscal restraint? Religious liberty? Originalist judges which don't try to re-write the Constitution? Yeah, I know. Wild, crazy stuff.

I know you enjoy watching you tube and get most of your stuff there. But there are some important issues facing the USA that are not shown on You Tube or the Cartoon Channel.
How about the Farm Bill. A 300 Billion Dollar monster. $300,000,000,000. farm bill for what?
It is all corporations. Small family farmers have all but disappeared. And the Democrats give us a $300 Billion dollar pork barrel for farm CORPORATIONS. and your
Matthews does in a Conservative talk host is more important. Cenk, you prove over and over what a pea brain you are. Go back to your cartoon channel and enjoy the fun with your stupid laugh.

Dear Doug H.
I want to response to your remarks about me personally by stating the following. I wish you had spent a single day in Iraq! I stand firmly by my statements because in my heart in my soul and in my intellect as a human being I believe completely that I as many Pro-Loving Americans believe. I am furious with Bush and his lies to send you to fight a war that should have never taken place. I did not feel this way when he told us that he would “hunt Osama BinLadin in Afghanistan”, at the point we were all supporting this man, the world supported us in this endeavor.
Furthermore, it is unfortunate that you think all I am doing is “regurgitating typical Anti American slurs”. I not only give a damn about the troops and this country, I give a damn every time I hear about more soldiers dying in Iraq.
Furthermore, I give a damn when I see that two Americans will not support the GI bill, these two are none other than George W. Bush and Senator John McCain. I give a damn when I see the conditions Walter Reed hospital is in, I give a damn when Rumsfeld told a soldier “you fight with the army you have”. I give a damn when I see George W. Bush making light of where those darn WMD could be in a fancy dinner and all present laughed.
Lastly, I give a damn about you and I am extremely proud and grateful to our entire Armed Forces for the courage and the will to defend our nation.

Dear Mike G.
“Ignoramus is as ignoramus does”. If you would elaborate for the rest of us, exactly who is the enemy these days, is it the Iraqis? I thought we were there to liberate them from the tyrant Sadam Hussein, he is now gone therefore, no longer a threat to his people. No WMD were ever found in Iraq, and I seem to recall Bush making a huge (photo opportunity) deal about “Mission Accomplish”, battle engagements over and done with. However, we are still there, why is that Mike?
In the mean time, Osama is still free, roaming around willfully doing as he wishes seven years and eight months after his order the horrific attacks on our nation.
Wait, yes, the enemy there now is the Taliban and AL Qaeda, Hmmm I wonder why it is that these terrorist are there now.
I am full of anger and rage these days and they are all directed at the lying incompetent man that has occupied the White House for eight long years. If as you say this makes me military hater you are a bigger fool than the remarks you have made. On the other hand, if you are so intelligent why is it that you have to use Bushes’ words verbatim? The talking points have begun, tell me something Mike (because I do not want to assume) do you know what appeasement means? Do you know what the difference between diplomacy and appeasement is?
Lastly, I hope and pray to G*d George W. Bush is convicted one day! Furthermore, I have just as much anger and hatred towards “terrorist” as you or any other human being. The only thing you know about me is that I am against this war and I cannot stand the sight of Bush. However, you have no idea who I am what I stand for and what I do.
Patty at 2:28PM on May 19th 2008
96. Patty-The idea that you are angrier at terrorists than GW Bush simply cannot be taken seriously when one considers just how much time you spend talking about how much you want Bush and Cheney behind bars and other similar thoughts.
Clearly you consider Republicans a far greater threat to our nation than Osama is and Saddam was. Osama would love to reduce you and me and everybody else in this country to a greasy spot on the pavement. Yet, you ignore this, except when cornered and continue to obsesses about Bush, spouting cliches like "Mission accomplished" and "Heckuva job brownie". That is how vacuous your position is.
Just once, I would love to hear one of the doctrinaire Bush critics like yourself admit that you don't have all the answers.

All I'm willing to publically offer is that my wife is a commander in the navy and a trauma, periopertive nurse. She treated wounded Marines, POWs and Iraqic civilians while deployed in Iraq. We socialize with other officers and their families. Opinions are quietly expressed with each other. Dear Dave,
I believe my exact remark was, “Furthermore, I have just as much anger and hatred towards “terrorist” as you or any other human being.” I never once mentioned George W. Bush in that statement. He was the furthest thing from my mind at that time, perhaps because I was referring to real human beings.
Moreover, I will never stop talking about George W. Bush, the “Decider”, the liar who would rather start an unnecessary war with Iraq, while letting Osama roam free. After exchanging ideas and issues over the past two years you have either not been paying attention or are suffering from selective memory. I have nothing against Republicans or the Republican party of yesteryear. I do however; have great disgust for what is hiding behind conservatism and the Republican Party, furthermore, it is the right-wing Evangelical nuts that make my skin crawl. There is no doubt in my mind that Eisenhower and Teddy Roosevelt are turning in their graves right about now.
I find it so incredibly beneath you as well as naïve to tell me that I fear the Republican party more than Osama, have you not been paying attention to what I have been expressing for the past two years? How far does your blind loyalty to this administration go? Why in G*d’s name do you hate our troops and this country so much, that you would take the word of Bush and allow our troops to die in Iraq, where we did not face any imminent threat from anyone? Talk about actions of Anti-American sentiments!
In fact, Dave, why it is that this new and definitely not improved however, eroded conservative movement hate our country so much. Why are you so whiling to let our brave Military personnel go of and be killed in a country we invaded for no decent reason?
Wow, you considered “Mission Accomplish” nothing but a cliché as well as “Heckuva job brownie”.
Alternatively, Dave the only thing you have stated that is in fact correct, is that I do not have all the answers. However, with the good Lord’s help and a whole lot of determined hard working American loving individuals we may just have all the answers even you.
Therefore, Dave the time has come to stop bashing any and all that do not agree with you with your Anti-American slurs when it is perfectly obvious that if you and your kind gave a damn about our country, you would be demanding investigations against Bush and an end to this war. On the other hand, do you fear finding out the truth that much, that you are okay fighting the enemies we created in Iraq, while the “MONSTER” that orchestrated the attacks on September 11, 2001 roams free?
Patty at 6:20PM on May 19th 2008
99. Dear Dave,
In my haste to communicate with you, I am afraid I neglected to express a few more very important points of view from my perspective.
I was just thinking if you love this nation so much and you and this new bread of right-wing hate mongers love our military so much that you cannot drive your cars without the famous bumper stickers, "Support the Troops". Why is it then that you are not outraged that the troops that come home and need physiological/mental health are not getting it and there are so many suicides in this war than any previously? Are you that Anti-American that you are not whiling to fight for the men and women that have given up so much for us?
Furthermore, if you are so patriotic, why is it that you have at best forgotten about the victims of September 11, 2001 or far worse, you do not care? If you did, why are you and the right wing not screaming to create a surge with a huge number of troops to go into Afghanistan and not come back until the mission of capturing or killing Osama is done? Are you that Anti-American that you do not care.
Alternatively, are you so unpatriotic or scared that you are whiling to allow Bush to practically destroy our Constitution and our civil rights? Allow him to wiretap all our phones, and give up your liberties as an American, because there are only two possible reasons for your appeasement to this scenarios, you are either too scared (and you call Liberals chicken, shame on you!) or you hate this nation.
Therefore, if you fall under any one of these two categories there is only one decent thing left for you to do. Leave America or love her and defend her against the domestic enemy we all know as the “decider”.

1) Every wartime president since Lincoln has intercepted enemy communications. What you and your liberal brethren want is tantamount to a magic trick. You want Bush to protect you and scream that he didn't on 911. But you don't want to allow him the means to do so. That's even wackier than you think I am.
2) When it comes to paying attention, it is you who continue to merely recite cliches ("the decider" - what does that mean? All Presidents make decisions.) and continue to reiterate your doctrinaire belief that Bush is evil, to the exclusion of salient, pertinent facts. You simply believe that Bush is evil. No recitation of facts or logic will persuade you otherwise.
3)Incredibly, you've stated that because I think it was a good idea that our military took out a tyrannical dictator who murdered between 600,000 and 2 million Iraqis and tortured perhaps hundreds of thousands more, that I'm unpatriotic and don't support the troops. Huh?
4)In a bizarre twist, you've added religious intolerance to the conversation, ripping evangelicals, maybe because Bush is one or because I am, or both. Tell me Patty, who are the biggest supporters of Israel?
I'll give you a hint. It's not the Islamic Radicals. It's GW Bush and evangelicals. That's what makes the "Bush is Hitler" argument so nutty. Would Hitler support Israel? Call me crazy, but I'm thinking not, since he murdered 6 million Jews.
5. I think that's enough. Good night. And good luck with that impeachment thing.

103. Dear Dave,
I realize you cannot see this, however, to use Lincoln’s name in the same sentence with Bush’s name is quite disrespectful to Lincoln. I want nothing but the truth from your president, as for protecting us, yes, that is his job, and however all he has done is made matters worse. Furthermore, I do not now nor have I ever blamed him for 9/11,
Again with the clichés, Dave I merely call him the “decider” because he himself said he was the “Decider”, your Bush gave himself that title. Please try to pay attention to the words that are coming out of my typing!
Dave, as much as I hate to assume anything personally about you, I would be whiling to bet you never gave the Iraqi people a second thought, and furthermore, you probably never gave a damn about them or their suffering under Saddam Hussein. We supposedly went in there at the beginning because of 9/11, one of your president’s first lies. Then it was Iraqi freedom, and then it was Al Qaeda (there now because of the Decider). Alternatively, you do not support the troops, if you did you would not defend this man that has created such divisiveness in our nation and you would be protesting this immoral and unjust war. You would want our troops to be where they are really needed, in Afghanistan tracking the real killer of our fellow Americans on 9/11. Dave, why do you not care about our fellow Americans that were murder by Osama Bin Laden?
There is no bizarre twist, you stated that I hate Republicans and I merely corrected you and explain what make my skin crawl, which is Bush, the religious fanatics that in our nation are the Evangelicals extremists. Furthermore, the only reason the Evangelicals are supporters of Israel, is because they are too busy waiting for the end of time so they can try to convert Jews to Christians. Well, Dave I hate to be the one to break it to you. That will never fly with the Jewish population!
I really wish you could open your eyes for once, and start supporting this nation and our troops. Focus on the real hate monger, your president the “decider”.

I commend you for your excellent posts; I especially appreciate the way you did not allow Dave to get away with his righteous and phony indignation. He certainly loves to reprimand anyone who disagrees with his political thinking, and then he turns around and insults everyone with his right wing double standard rehearsed talking points. I especially loved the fact that you called him out on why his kind refuse to support our troops. They are so scared of the big bad boogieman that they are whiling to allow troop deployments anywhere and everywhere, whether or not any threats exist. No doubt, we are hated much more than we were back in 2001, all thanks to the Commander in Chief, the one man who could care less about our troops or our working class Americans. It does make one wonder why they hate our country so much they are not whiling to fight for it and for us.
So, Dave how long have you hated America and the troops?

105. For PATTY
Jay Leno on President Bush
As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever
been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and
it seems to hit the mark.
The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some
Poll data I found rather hard to believe.
It must be true given the source, right? The Newsweek poll alleges
that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the
country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the
performance of the President. In essence 2 /3 of the citizenry just
ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I
started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?'
A. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours
a day, 7 Days a week?
B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning
in the summer and heating in the winter?
C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time
and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?
E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks
from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to
present identification papers as we move through each state?
F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we
would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?
G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying
cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.
H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency
workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a
helicopter to take you to the hospital.
I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.
J.. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case
of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and
use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you,
your family, and your belongings.
K. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat
screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a
gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family
against attack or loss.
L. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs
or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where
90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.
M.. How about the complete religious, social and political
freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.
Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the
world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U .S ., yet has a
great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The
most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about
what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of
thanking the good Lord we live here.
I know, I know. What about the president who took us
into war and has no plan to get us out? The
president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating?
Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days
after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of
recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name
in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful
brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander-in- chief of
an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?
Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show?
Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't
take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be
glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he
actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told
you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.
Make no mistake about it.
The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in
many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no
draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse
to go and end up with either a ' 'general' discharge, an 'other than honorable'
discharge or, worst case scenario, a dishonorable' discharge after a
few days in the brig.
So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent
of Americans?
Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it
bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news.
Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts.
How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media
knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations.
They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their
actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask why they
tried to allow a murderer like O. J. Simpson to write a book about
how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it
this way......Insane!
Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the
bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have
as country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among
the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times
a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes,
tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe
thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and
with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this
is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'
