Breastfeeding an Eight-Year-Old?
This is a clip from a 2006 British documentary called Extraordinary Breastfeeding that we just spotted on Jezebel. Watch and be amazed: a woman decided to let her children wean when they were ready and they . . . just . . . never . . . . did. Or rather, they didn't until well into elementary school. And the nine-year-old says she misses it!
Here's marathon breastfeeder Veronika's defense of what she calls "full-term breastfeeding." An excerpt:
The human body biologically expects to breastfeed for up to about seven years of age ~ the universal age for losing the milk teeth. There is so much anthropological and scientific evidence to show that this is what our body needs and expects, regardless of the culture, climate, race or status we are born into.
What do you think? Assuming she and the kids are happy and what she says about the health benefits of breast milk beyond babyhood are true, is there anything wrong with this? She says everyone should consider full-term nursing (letting the kids say when they're done). But nursing until our kids didn't want to anymore meant about 12 months for most people we know. Nursing into grade school seems like a rather extraordinary effort to keep one's kids babies.
P.S. How about that amazing officer in China who breastfed nine baby quake victims?

61. "53. Um, Americans do this too. I was breastfed until I was 5 years old and I have an IQ of 143."

Research shows that prolonged breast feeding produces nerds. (just kidding)

62. In all honesty, this makes me sick to my stomach.
While it may be healthy for the body, it just doesn't sound healthy for the mind.

63. 8. Sorry, I have to agree with the Captain on this (this must be a first). It is downright creepy, and I'd love to know what the effects of this will be down the road, as the child grows up.

I have an answer: This is how co-dependent liberals are reared. I'm sure this kid will grow up to be King of the libs; sucklings that are totally dependent on the tit called "big government."

64. I want to echo the comments about this case being creepy. The kids drawing pictures of her breasts and naming them. If it's totally natural/casual fine, but when it's to the point of fixation as this obviously is, just not right. I imagine a "Carrie" like scene with the mom waiting up in her children's bedroom during their high school years, "Why do you reject my breasts??? YOU MUST SUCK THE BREASTS!!!"

65. This is just so wrong on so many levels! You're supposed to breastfeed to nourish a growing baby not meet your own needs...saying they will stop when they're ready..what if they NEVER are?
The mother in this piece needs a psychiatric consultation now & what does her husband say about it??

66. Actually, the person who wrote "creepy" kind of had a point. I breastfed both my children but never in a million years could imagine doing that until 8 yrs old or even 5 yrs old. Definitely by age 3 these children start noticing the difference between boys and girls, and will have developed a certain psyche about things. A child at age 8? This is offering them psychological problems they don't need when they become adults. If you said the child was age 3 or 4 I wouldn't even think twice. I don't even think the 5 yr old is a huge deal but 8 yrs is. Anything past age 3 or 4 is a little odd. I wonder if it is counter-transference on the mother's part.

67. I am a breastfeeding supporter and I nursed both my children until they were around 2 years old.
That said, I must admit that when I have witnessed a 5-year old go up to her mom in a public place and nurse while her mom kept on talking as if nothing was going on, I squirmed. I cannot justify why I felt uncomfortable, I just did.
An 8-year old breastfeeding? Thinking of this makes me shudder. I could not bring myself to watch the whole tape because I did not want to retain a mental image of that.
I remember that some people thought it was disgusting, downright disgusting, that I was nursing an infant (3 months old) in the early '90s. It is not my wish to be disgusted at a mother nursing her child, but with this woman, I am.
The creepiness factor is waaaay off the charts here.
If you check out the posts at the Jezebel article, you find that this woman not only breastfeeds her 8-year old daughter, but also lets her husband nurse - AT THE SAME TIME.
And Ike, they also discuss women who go to their older child's school to breastfeed at lunch and who go to their older child's sporting events to breastfeed during the break.
This mother's choices disturb me in so many ways.
I kinda wish I had never read this article.

70. The comment by the above "Thinksmart" obviously isn't smart at all. Anyone who thinks breastfeeding their child in general is "creepy" or "sexual" are perverted and ignorant themselves.
The decision of breastfeeding your baby is the best choice. Unfortunately, not all mothers who want to or try to, are successful at it, due to their bodies not producing enough milk or problems with their nipples.
Obviously, the people here who thinks breastfeeding is perverted or sexual never breast fed..lol.
Lactating women have to go through a lot of uncomfortable situations. One is engorging (extremely painful and you can't take drugs to aleve the pain or for any relief. It's like someone plugging in a water hose to each of your breasts and forgetting to turn it off and no way of draining any excess..like it's about to explode. Talking about painful and miserable.
There is also the physical appearance of them not being even, or them being totally lop sided.
Oh, and the embarrassing leaks..(Hey, your breasts are on your baby's schedule).
Smelling like breast milk all the time isn't great either. And also to mention, that your breast "deflates" when they dry up. I can go on and on.
Breast feeding is a motherly sacrafice for the best interest of the child.
You sick'0's need a grip on reality.
I personally breast fed 6 of my kids..Extremely intelligent, healthy, and beautiful. A couple of my kids couldn't drink formula..Their stomach couldn't hold it down. I tried doing both formula and breast milk for all them. But I only breast fed up to the time they started growing "teeth".
The milk is the best..sweet, all natural, and free.
It's gives the best results for growing babies.
But to do it at a certain age..Hmm. I don't know.

71. thinksmart, you are such a knowitall, aren't you? Well, there is plenty of research done over decades by all different groups of scientists, doctors, midwives and such that PROVES breastfeeding is the healthiest thing you could do for your babies. Not only does it improve and strengthen the immune system, but it helps with bonding and other things. Breastfeeding until 5, 6 or 8 years of age is a little much though...that's just my opinion, and as you put it in so many words, everyone is allowed to their own opinion. We are not God, on the other hand, and therefore have NO RIGHT to judge. People that judge others are merely afraid of their lifestyle, and unable to live life the ways they really want to or they wouldn't have any cause to judge others because they'd be fulfilled with their own lives enough to not really have the energy or time to critisize other people. Live life, love life and stay the heck out of other people's lives unless you have something positive to contribute. Otherwise you're just being an ass because you're bored with your life.

72. Why don't people mind their own goddamn business.? If people want to breast-feed their kids until they are 8 who is it hurting.? The U.S is so sexually perverted thinking breast-feeding is sexual.
cjh at 3:25PM on May 26th 2008
73. Breastfeeding releases Oxytocin (IPA: /ˌɔk.sɪ.ˈtoʊ.sɪn/) (Greek, "quick birth") is a mammalian hormone that also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain.
In humans, oxytocin is thought to be released during hugging, touching, and orgasm in both sexes. In the brain, oxytocin is involved in social recognition and bonding, and may be involved in the formation of trust between people[1] and generosity.
So there is a connection between breastfeeding and sexual feelings.

74. Wot the bloody 'ell is 'er problem? Seriously, I see a pathetic mama's boy who is going to end up getting 'is arse kicked in school or being put through 'ell in school if any of the other boys found out. Does he have to bring Mom to school with him so she's there when he's hungry? Sick bastards, I just 'ope the boy doesn't end up a 'omosexual. I just hope he is weaned before he becomes lactose-intolerant.
