This idea of not talking to your enemies is so silly I can't believe anyone is taking it seriously. Was Reagan appeasing the Soviet Union when he negotiated with them? How about Nixon going to China? Let alone when Reagan sold weapons to Iran (which actually comes pretty damn close to appeasement).
These neocons sound like they're in third grade. Sally won't talk to Suzy because she did something really mean to her. Adults should know better. It's so disappointing that McCain has gone down this neocon road and bought into the Bush idea of not talking to your enemies.
Speaking of responsible adults in the Republican Party, James Baker gives John McCain a lesson on diplomacy (these are the kind of serious professionals that attracted me to the Republican Party in the first place -- our progressive viewers hate it when I compliment James Baker, but whether you agreed or disagreed, you knew the man was smart and capable):
Well, it turns out John McCain agreed with James Baker -- at some point. Because as you can see from this clip, he went much further than Obama and wanted to talk to Hamas:
John McCain used to be a reasonable guy. What he's done to try to get elected is a really sad spectacle to watch. Did you see how uncomfortable he was on Ellen as he tried to maintain his craven position on gay marriage? The man is not comfortable in his own skin anymore. And he might not even be comfortable with his own positions anymore (whatever they happen to be today), because he then commits the mother of all flip-flops:
I'm not sure I've ever seen a politician flip-flop as many times John McCain has. He's breaking all the records. It's really sad and ironic because one of the things that attracted me to him in 2000 was how principled he was. Well, at least I thought he was principled. But that was a different McCain than this guy running for office now. I don't even recognize this guy. And even if I did, it looks like he'd just change tomorrow anyway.

5. Hey there Big Guy,
I don't know boss, how many conservative bloggers do you talk to? I know you're in tight with the Huffington Post, but what about the boys over there at Power Line....ever called those guys up for a little chit chat about the spin on news stories?
As I sit here and ponder why Obama should talk to the Iranians and Syrians, I wonder why he didn't go and talk to the people in Kentucky or West Virginia during his campaign.
I wonder why Obama doesn't talk to those bitter small town Americans who cling to religion and guns.
Now these people aren't his enemy, but Obama doesn't talk to much to them and they're the ones Hillary throws in his face when she's asked to get out of the race.
Willet at 6:26PM on May 23rd 2008
6. Robert Okane - while I am not excusing Obama's 'flip flops'(although that list is questionable at best) Obama is inexperienced and I expect some blunders. And indeed, that is a valid argument for not voting for him if you choose.
John McCain, on the other hand, is a 72 year old who has been in the Senate since 1986 - and the house of reps before that - i.e., a career politician. That makes some of his recent flip flops on tax cuts and now pandering to the religious right and his stance on states rights issues less excusable. As Cenk rightly points out, this is a man not comfortable with himself anymore. The 'maverick' is gone - McCain will no doubt let the hard liners in the GOP rule him in order to win in November.
David S. at 6:41PM on May 23rd 2008
7. Willet suggests that Obama ignores the, "small town American" by not campaigning heavily in areas like Appalachia.
It would have been a waste of resources. What are the odds that a half African-American candidate is going to prevail in West Virginia or Appalachian Kentucky? Zero.
What the "power line" crowd is too dense or disingenuous to understand is that Obama's "controversial" remarks were totally mis-interpreted by the right wing. Obama was speaking *for* the rural, small town American whose jobs have indeed disappeared with no sign of returning.
Obama's point was entirely valid.
Captain Negative at 7:35PM on May 23rd 2008
8. This is going to continue to be a problem for McCain. He's from a generation that is unaccustomed to the 24/7 media glare and non-stop punditry. Politicians of his generation regularly contradicted (and still do - keep a close watch on Joe Biden sometime) themselves as they moved from audience to audience.
Both Obama and McCain, obviously have to appeal to their base, which include groups that they're not totally comfortable with. McCain is no more a conservative than Obama is a populist.
Obama plays better in the current media environment than does McCain.
If the sum total of the election is going to be based on charisma, sound bites and caution in the glare of the public eye, Obama will win. In fact, it had better if Obama is to win because there isn't much else of substance there for him to offer.
McCain at least has a past record to judge - warts and all.

9. How about that Maxine Waters, Democrat-CA, letting the Democratic Party Socialism agenda out of the bag!!!!!!!

10. Hey Captain...
""What the "power line" crowd is too dense""....
Whew! a "crowd".....and all along I thought it was just me and Cenk.
Speaking of Kentucky, there is a Blue Grass music festival in Louisville August 3rd and 4th. I'll be there and I'm almost sure Cenk, Ana Kasparian, Jill Pike and Randi Rhodes will be too.
Willet at 8:43PM on May 23rd 2008
11. Hey Captain yea you "dumb fuck" your like a pissy, whiny little kid. Just how many cats do you have in your apartment? You remind of the little fat bald man driving in front of me on the way home from work in the slow lane with the "Bush lied" sticker on the back of your little Hybrid. I bet you hear the "ah no sorry I am busy tonite" excuse alot dont ya? Do you ever shut up seriously.

12. Ya gotta luv the Barrack Obama flip-flops. The other day he says that Iran is a "tiny" country and a tiny threat. The next day he's in panic mode because McCain called him on it and suddenly Barry says that Iran is a huge threat that we need to take very seriously. Oops. Glad he finally got it right, but it seems like he really never thought about it until McCain questioned him. Inexperience.

14. Lets make it short and quick. Obama stayed in a church that preached hate and lies for 20 years. Obama said he heard none of this. Either Obama is the dumbest canidate ever,or the worlds biggest liar. Either way he's not ready for prime time.
