Sydney Pollack, RIP
Director Sydney Pollack died today at the age of 73 of cancer. He directed The Way We Were, Out of Africa and the brilliant Tootsie, a scene of which is posted above. In it, he plays the agent of Dustin Hoffman's character and delivers a line that should be a mantra for actors over-thinking silly roles:: "A tomato doesn't have logic!" He will be missed.

1. Ada, The man directed and produced many hits, but he never approached the greatness of Howard Hawks or John Huston.

Indeed, Robert, indeed.

4. He was a great director and actor, and he knew both jobs well. In his own way he was a genius and a great man. He will be missed.

5. JetFlyingV,
It isn't a contest, fool.
Simply pointing out correctly what a great director Pollack was does not mean you have to then dredge up who, in your subjective opinion, was better.
Let the statement stand on its own merit.
Jeez.

6. Dawn, I would further state Pollack had great screenplays that were lessened by his actors, movies that were at times bland and near great, very rarely great. Now Pollack would be great compared to todays directors.

7. Jef- everyone is better at their job after they die. I suspect Ashton Kutcher will be revered as a "great actor" after he dies. Hopefully I'm not around to witness that.
