The US Open Golf Championship wasn't the only recent major competition to finish in a tie after the regulation rounds. But it certainly has a more sensible format for breaking the tie.Today at the 2008 US Open Golf Championship, Tiger Woods birdied the final hole in dramatic fashion to finish in a two-man tie after completion of the regulation four rounds. The tie breaker is another complete round of 18 holes on Monday. Makes sense.
The recent 2008 United States Women's Chess Championship also finished with a tie between one woman with a Russian-sounding name and another woman with a Russian-sounding name. You would think that chess players and people who organize chess tournaments have a sensible way to break a tie. You would be wrong. The tie breaker in this championship was a game of speed chess, in which each player has to move as fast as possible and then smack the chess clock to stop their own time countdown and put their opponent on the clock. Watch this video to see the most ridiculous tie breaker in sports history. (Disregard the first 20 seconds and you can stop watching after 1 minute 15 seconds.)

1. Turks, let me lay out a real news story for your blog.
Democrats Fuel Excessive Gasoline Prices For Americans.
The United States has the largest known deposits of oil shale in the world, according to the Bureau of Land Management. An estimated 2,500 Giga-Barrels of potentially recoverable oil, enough to meet U.S. demand for oil at current rates for 110 years. Democratic Congressman Mark Udall has blocked any significant commercial production of oil from oil shale in the United States. Also, the pandering of the Democratic Majority to every fringe environmental group known to man has ground domestic oil production and exploration to a virtual halt. These actions of the past 30+ years, designed for political gain, have come home to roost in the form of $4.00 to $6.00 a gallon gasoline. High fuel prices are a threat to the Financial Security of most Americans and the diminished supply of oil is a threat to National Security.
As gas prices continue to increase, the Democratic controlled Congress continues to blame American Oil Companies while ignoring practical steps to stop the pain Americans are feeling at the pump. To lower gasoline prices and reduce our dependence on foreign oil, we need real solutions to our energy challenges.

2. Paul - "Giga - Barrells"?. Nice. I can see you're a big chess fan. Good stuff, though. Shale oil. We need it. Got to have it. It's there. We can get it. All we need is the national will. (Oops.)
Dave at 1:55AM on Jun 16th 2008
3. Shale oil takes more energy to refine than it produces.
Oil exploration continues around the world. It would be grand if some huge new fields were discovered. It's a big, "IF."
The world is running out of oil. It's that simple. The Royal Saud's may increase production by 200,000 barrels per day. That may provide some relief, no doubt, but it is a short-term "solution." The world will just run out of profitable oil supplies that much sooner.
Forget the right-wing profiteering politicians and those with vested interests in oil profits.
We have (or soon will have) PEAKED in world oil production. We are screwed.
I do agree on one minor point. Why do Young Turks waste our time with golf stories? We all know that every thread ever posted on TYT goes political within the firt few replies. Often, as with this one, with the very first post.

4. Captain Negative : You were right! You definitely got me. As an eighth grader at a Catholic school, I was placed in charge of about 40 third grade boys for the mandatory Sunday Children's Mass. However, you will not believe that I did a good job in this my first leadership experience.
Now, with my scalp under your belt, could you please answer my original question "What would you have done if you were GWB on the morning of 9/11?"
Simple question.

5. Obama has promised change in Washngton-but empty words in Obama camp.
Obama recently picked 3 people to help search for for a running mate for Obama.
Jin Johnson, a long time chairman at Fannie Mae was one. Then it was found out that he got favorite treatment from a friend of his, Angelo Mozilo, at Countywide Mortgage Corp, in obtaining a mortgage. Obama has been very critical of Countywide Mortgage Corp and has on numerous occassions denounced Countywide Corp involvement in the Sub-Prime Mortgage crisis. Soros, we all know him, has over 1.5 million shares in Countywide and Soros has been the main man in pushing Obama towards the Presidency. Jim Johnson resigned his position from Obama's campaign when these facts became known. Business as usual, Pay to Play.
Then there is Eric Holder, another one picked by Obama to be on the running mate committee of three. Eric Holder ex Justice Dept offical, was knee deep in the Marc Rich pardon scandal. Although prosecutors opposed the pardon of the fugitive commodities trader, it was Holder who got former WH Clinton lawyer Jack Quinn to help Marc Rich with his pardon. It was this move that enabled the Marc Rich pardon to bypass the Justice Dept and get the pardon directly to Clinton to sign. Soros also is knee deep into commodities.
Eric Holder was a prime force in getting Marc Rich his pardon.
Business as usual.
Is this is what Obama means by "Change"?
It is nothing more than the old Chicago Political Game, "Pay to Play"

6. I thought that was excellent. Most interesting chess match I've ever seen. They should all be like that.

7. I don't think any of us AOL bloggers are big petroleum experts, but, at today's prices shale oil is cost effective according to many folks who do know. And if our economy crashes and burns, it will most likely happen because we refuse to tap into our own energy resources. Yes, world oil reserves are peaking, but we can balance supply and demand in our country for 30-40 years - by tapping into proven domestic reserves - while we work on alternatives.
Dave at 8:06AM on Jun 16th 2008
8. The left does not want to keep oil as our main source of energy. This is why they have STOPPED all efforts to get oil from our own land or from the shelf. Now their answer is to force the oil companies to find an alternative source of energy so they can put themselves out of business. How ridiculous is that. You wanted a chess game. We have had one for thirty plus years.
JIM at 8:59AM on Jun 16th 2008
9. Here is some additional food for thought.
Why are the Democrats in Congress that are beholden to the environmentalist wackos not mandating that the environmentalist develop the "Magical" alternative energy sources? Actors, Singers, New-Age Hippies, Al Gore and Professor Know-It-All's should be forced to pool all of their financial and economic might and run Big Oil into the ground. And they should do so with out One Red Cent of the taxpayers money.

10. Cap,
Big Oil has found a new huge reserve in Brazil. It is located fifty miles off of the coast in the Atlantic Basin. You know, the areas that the Democratic Congress has designated off-limits here in the United States. But alas.......China will drill into our reserves by butting up to our border with the blessings of Cuba.
New Oil shale and Coal to Liquid technologies put the EROEI into a viability factor that is better than that of Corn Based Ethanol.
Say Yes to Cheaper Fuel and Cheaper Food.
Say No to a Democratic Controlled Congress.

11. NEWS FLASH:::Cenk has declined taking over "Meet the Depressed" on Sunday mornings. His reason was that the job pays way too much money for a person with his G.E.D. diploma. He would rather concentrate on trying to find sponsors for Air America, the failed radio disaster.
