Everyone has been lambasting General Wesley Clark today over his comments about John McCain, including Barack Obama who rejected his comments. But has anyone watched the comments? Not only does General Clark not disparage John McCain's war record, he calls him his "hero" for how courageous he was in his service.
The only point General Clark is making is that this does not translate to having experience in executive responsibility. That point is not only uncontroversial, it is indisputable. Is everyone who got shot out of a plane or spent time in a POW camp qualified to be President of the United States? Of course, not.
Does that experience and how he handled it speak to John McCain's courage? Absolutely. His service to the country? No doubt. But does it speak to whether he has the national security or foreign policy experience necessary to be president? Absolutely not.
Watch General Clark's comments here and judge for yourself whether he said something outrageous or perfectly rational:

31. Being a prisoner of war develops character. Has Obama endured anything comparable?

Obama's black and started dirt poor, on foodstamps.
Mccain comes from an elite military family and has been wealthy all his life. He said he didn't even love his country until he was deprived of its company. Before being captured, he had a reputation as a hothead who wouldn't follow instructions. He crashed five planes.
Obama had the character to go straight to detroit after graduation to help people whose jobs had evaporated or outsourced - he bypassed the high paying job offers, rolled up his sleeves and got to work helping people.
Mccain left his first wife who was no longer attractive and married the hundred million dollar hottie. Obama's been with the same woman all his life.
He hasn't paid off four years of property taxes on his La Jolla home, one of seven that the mcsames have.
This extraordinary character of mcsame has caused him to flipflop on page after page of policies.
He says he supports vets and votes against them, was against the swift boat phonies for fascism before he was for them - uses one on the campaign trail and took $70,000 in campaign contributions after saying their 'dirty little secret' was that they earned their medals at the end of the war when they were being handed out for public relations, not at the beginning of the war when Kerry actually earned his.
But this 'character' flopped on that, and taxes for billionaires and torture and vet's rights and gi bill and page after page of other items.
He had an excellent opportunity to develop an outstanding character, no doubt!
....where is it?

32. General Clark's opinion about Sen. McCain isn't news. There is no apology necessary because we are all entitled to our opinion. This certainly was not a vicious attack on Sen. McCain. He's a hero for his service, but that's not a special qualification or entitlement to be President. He's old too, but that doesn't disqualify him...yet.

true. I heard it all day on the radio.
Also no apologies have been proferred by republicans ever for the swift boat phonies, the party's surrogates who lied repeatedly.
Gen. Clark didn't lie or even slightly exaggerate and he credited mccain for serving honorably at the same time.
Frankly, you hit them with a balloon and they cave like princesses, then call their personal injury attorney and line up the chiropractor.
It's political malingering.

Actually he is half white isn't he? Or do we conveintantly keep that little tid bit out. I agree it looks alot better, black and on foodstamps, we will stick with that. Your black like me too right?

35. It would be rational to say that no one is truly qualified to be Commander in Chief...so it comes down to comparison of Obama and McCain in this position. Obama has been in charge of absolutely nothing....ever....as a legislator he's spent most of his time campaigning. In spite of General Halftrack Clark's assessment of McCain....John McCain has been a squadron commander and a Senator for over twenty years with substantial experience in military activities of several administrations. He pushed for the surge which by even the most skeptical reports is succeeding. So certainly if he is not qualified to be C in C, then Obama doesn't even merit consideration.

36. General Clark is an honorable and respected military officer who has spoken with the authority reserved solely to such experienced high ranking officer. McCain’s comparative rank in the army is Major.-at least 6 ranks below General Clark. Now we hear ignorant civilians, particular; in the news media, second guessing the judgment of a military genius.
How quickly we forget who drew first blood with “swift boat”
The Far Right group seems to have very short memory regarding how their proproganda machine use “Swiftboat” to promote their disgraceful campaign that was designed to belittle the heroic endeavors of a true and honest officer and a gentleman, namely, Senator Kerry. Now that outrageous act has come home to roost. So we find them scrambling hopeless like terrified rabbits, trying to avoid reaping what they had sowed. “Swift boat “is now being compared with “Slow Plane”. In this regard, the

After you have read this article research the military report on Senator Kerry and those deceitful nincompoop who are numbered among the Far Right who sanction the defamation of Mr. Kerry’s war record should hang their heads in permanent shame..
Well done General Clark, you have no need to apologize. You have not condescended to the despicable acts of the Far Left. You have stated clearly that Senator McCain’s military record should not be impinged. Experience and Judgment are the hallmarks of our military system. Experienced non-commissioned guided by the judgment of commissioned officer has never failed to achieve our military goals. Barack may not be experienced but he has continued to demonstrate good judgment and I am confident he will mature into an astute commander-in – chief rather guided by experienced and capable military advisors. In my view no apology is needed. However, you are dead on about the experience issue. We look forward to greeting you as our next Secretary of Defense.
Respectfully,
Army.

39. I am sorry Ata and the other "Turks". You both sound as if you don't have the brains to reason your way out of a wet paper bag. Please tell us how you got this job. You talk about luck of circumstance! Yes, a squadron commander does make executive decisions and a life-time of debate over decisions about war and its' implications and dangers qualifies one too. Bob found it inconceivable for Clark to have said what he did, and so do, and you two need help.

40. Rick-ety thinking,
Is it your assertion that the swift boat douche bags for deceit were right about John Kerry not properly earning his Silver and Bronze Stars? Bcause that would suggest that the US Navy just puts these in the cracker jack boxes sold at the PX, which would also make the medals earned by John McInsane and indeed every brave Navy man who ever put his ass on the line for this country suspect.
That would also include any medals proudly worn by those very same Not-Too-Swift Boat Scum Bags for Shameless Partisan Character Assassination on Behalf of a True Elitist Blue Blooded Connecticut Born Yankee Who Was Too Much Of A Pussy to Sign Up For a War He Himself Agreed With.

I wouldn't go buying Barack Obammy party celebration supplies just yet. Last AOL poll I saw showed 38% for Obammy and 62% for McCain. And we all know how you libtards like to pad the polls by voting under all seven of your email addresses.
There also weren't any Blue states left on the map.
Even white-guilt California turned into a 'red' state...

When was the last time you saw a serious news outlet (Faux News is not legitimate) refer to an AOL poll.
I think you should go back to choking the lizard.

44. 1. Obama's Character is his primary qualification? Seriously? If rags to riches qualifies somebody, maybe Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or Ross Perot should be Prez.
And why is it assumed that Obama's Character is good when he's either clueless or not telling the truth about fruitcake J.Wright, a guy he's known for 20 years? And don't forget Bill Ayers, the Pentagon bomber, another friend of Barrack. I know. Bill Ayers has gone "respectable" now. Fits right in as a college prof. What a shock.
2. Incredibly, Dems insist that somehow, they really "support" the military, but would rather take the dubious word of self-centered lout John Kerry, while recklessly impugning the integrity of hundreds of Swift Boat Vets who have put their reputations on the line to say that Kerry Lied.
Yeah, I'll bet they all conspired to concoct a story. Sure. And Dems whine incessantly about "Swift Boating", but have not proved one claim by these honorable vets to be false. Pathetic.
Dave at 8:47PM on Jul 1st 2008
45. Nicki, nobody cares WHY Gen Clark said it...only that he did. And the McCain camp is acting all "poor me" like the school girls they are. McCain hasn't been exhibiting any strength in this or many of the other gaffes that have occurred. He's got such a persecution complex that I worry what would happen if he actually wins the election. "Mr-I-Was-For-It-Before-I-Was-Against-It" has now hired a swift boater--the very type of people he'd once impugned himself.
