Not one but four teachers at the Helix High charter school in California have allegedly had inappropriate sexual relationships with teenage students in the last couple of years, reports
KFMB News 8 in San Diego:
- Former music teacher Frank Palumbo was accused of having sex with a 17-year-old female student and was sentenced to five years probation.
- Ex-band director Jessica Kahal got three years probation after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex with a 17-year-old male student.
- Geography teacher Garry Wilcox was arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 17-year-old female student. He pleaded guilty and has a July 22 trial date.
- Business teacher Jeff Wenham resigned after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with the same student allegedly involved with Wilcox.
Clearly, the school needs a reform. We'd start by getting rid of the lascivious Scottie mascot.

1. In most states, 17 is past the age of consent.

2. 17 may be the age of consent in some states, but a teacher coming on sexually to a student is flat out wrong. It is as devastating as a therapist coming on to a patient. Some lines you do not cross.

xx
Are you saying that adult students above the age of consent are the same as people who need to see therapists, or that the age in which it becomes your business should be lowered?
I agree that some lines you do not cross, but we may disagree as to which ones.
Why do you automatically assume that the older adult is responsible if both are above the age of consent, and if they are, how do you propose curtailing their rights when you think you should? Do they have any say so, and if not, why not?

4. Based just on the info here, I wouldn't call the 17 yr old who had sex with two different teachers a victim.
Sounds more like someone (putting) out for good grades.

5. Well, Clif, a teacher is in a position of power over a student. Much like a supervisor having an affair with a subordinate. You just don't do it. And I find it tough to believe if your teen aged son/daughter was banging their adult teacher, you would not be upset about it. And if you weren't upset about it, there is something wrong with you.

Global Warming a likely cause.

Not one but four teachers at the Helix High charter school in California have allegedly had inappropriate sexual relationships with teenage students in the last couple of years, reports KFMB News 8 in San Diego:
The increased temperatures are clearly a factor in the increase of teenage sex in general, and sex with teachers in particular.
Former music teacher Frank Palumbo was accused of having sex with a 17-year-old female student and was sentenced to five years probation.
Ex-band director Jessica Kahal got three years probation after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex with a 17-year-old male student.
Geography teacher Garry Wilcox was arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 17-year-old female student. He pleaded guilty and has a July 22 trial date.
Business teacher Jeff Wenham resigned after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with the same student allegedly involved with Wilcox.
The 17-year-old female student that had been the victim of both Garry Wilcox and Jeff Wenham, said in an interview " I think the melting ice sheets are part of the reason they came after me. Both kept murmuring something about being hot, or that they thought I was HOT"
Clearly, the school needs a reform, but we can not underestimate the role that global warming is playing in these increasing number of teachers becoming involved in inappropriate sexual relationships with teenage students.
Sorry........
I could not resist.

8. Among the other things Bush accomplished for the Religious Republicans was making it basically impossible for anyone over the age of 18 to have sex with anyone under the age of 18, both here and anywhere on the planet. The age of consent laws on the books of most states were rendered moot.

Well that didn't take long.
It's Bush's fault.

10. The theory that those in a position of "less power" are necessarily damaged by a sexual relationship with someone with "more power" is simply that...a theory. There is absolutely no solid evidence that this is the case ---- it is an assumption by an unholy alliance between the Religious Right Wingnuts and Psychobabbly Left Wingnuts to enforce their control over human sexuality, which both the extreme right and the extreme left hate with a passion...except when they're doing it. Many of the most valuable relationships in history have come from an older and more powerful mentor entering into an intimate and sexual relationship with a protege' and then the protege' taking over the "mantle" of the mentor. It is just psychobabbly propaganda that this has EVER damaged anyone SOLELY because of the power differential. Therapists marry their patients all the time, although there is a move to make this illegal. Teachers marrying their students is a proverb. Ministers marry within their congregations. This "boundary" garbage is part and parcel of the desire of extremists on both ends of the political spectrum to control others. If someone is over a reasonable age of consent what they do with someone else who is over the age of consent is none of anyone's business but theirs. This "person of trust" garbage is simply a ruse to extend control of people's genital decisions, closing in more and more on freedom. Really, both the Church and the Social Services community MUST be taught to keep their obnoxious little noses OUT of people's crotches. It's bad enough when my dog sticks his nose there....but the government or a minister...eeeew. And, no, I've NEVER "crossed that line," but really think we should get rid of the line and the governmental interference.

wow, a conditional ad hominem. Putting it aside, that's what you feel like. What you feel like is probably pretty predictable.
What I'm asking is what should the law be? Should it be civil or criminal or both?

12. "Fr. John"
I don't believe you're a priest.
You talk like an atheist and a crude man at that.
Rather, what you should be speaking about is how all of the sex, sex, sex in the media everywhere with bosoms, nipples, belly buttons, booty-cutty bottoms and yes, straight on crotch pictures and poses literally invading every television set, every magazine, every billboard, every mall, every street, every music video, every tv show, every talk show, every newspaper. You get the point.
Why not "preach" about getting people's body parts out of reach of our noses and the noses of young, impressionable children (diva and player wannabe's).
Ever heard of The Theology of the Body?
You know, putting all in balance, treating the body (and mind, soul) as the Holy temple of God, and not as as object.
Perhaps then, abortions and sexual diseases and teen pregnancies and teen depression and teen suicide rates could drop.
You must be old enough to remember that being a kid was so much simpler and one could go to school to STUDY and be formed.
It's exactly the priests who speak like you that cause the believers to exit the pews and the non-believers to poke fun at the priesthood.
And, honestly, about your dog and where his nose has been: TMI!!!!

13. KK. It's possible that this school was just a bad magnet. Charter schools often have to take any teachers they can to fill their faculty.
But another possibility, and it seems a little more likely given that once student was with two teachers, is that some of the students are trying to bait the teachers. Often accusation alone is enough to cost a teacher their job. If they have a weak union, the school just has an easier time getting rid of a teacher they don't like. A male teacher at a school I worked at was being set up by three female students at 7th grade who were trying to have sex with him in order to blackmail A's from him. The three were caught when they were overheard bragging about their plan, which included putting viagra and ghb in brownies.
Anything is possible in schools today.

14. It's not Bush's fault, Bob, but he's still an ass.
Young people ahve bene hving sex wioth other young epople that are above and below the legal age for years--probably you did too.So, that pot-er had a point.
I don't think perosnally that there should be no boundary in place.I think a power differential *does8 exist in these caes.
But a 17 yr old is still no baby.
And 17 *is8 a legal age most everywhere.
I don't think it's all the teacher's fault--but they also need to get with it.
The helping professions need counseling in sex conduct, and boundaries for their own protection if nothing else.
And while we blame this one or that one, the teacher, or the student,--our country's attitude towards sex is hardly healthy.
The basic atittude is:
"It's disgusting and dirty--so everyone's doing it, heehee".That weird, and perverted *attitude*, not sex itself is the problem.
You tell me *that* has nothing to do with this craziness.
