Health care providers who depend on federal aid to operate may soon be required to certify that they will not discriminate against doctors, nurses, or any other employees who object to administering birth control and abortion services. In turn, the proposed rule by the Department of Health and Human Services would allow any federal grant recipient to obstruct a woman's access to contraception. The New York Times also reports "the new requirement is needed to ensure that federal money does not support morally coercive or discriminatory practices or policies in violation of federal law."
What is the religious reasoning behind this? Some forms of contraception prevent implantation of a fertilized egg in a woman's womb. For members of the religious right, that is classified as abortion because a fertilized egg marks the beginning of "the creation life." In fact, the HHS states the following "definitions" for abortion:
What is the religious reasoning behind this? Some forms of contraception prevent implantation of a fertilized egg in a woman's womb. For members of the religious right, that is classified as abortion because a fertilized egg marks the beginning of "the creation life." In fact, the HHS states the following "definitions" for abortion:
Abortion: An abortion is the termination of a pregnancy. There are two commonly held views on the question of when a pregnancy begins. Some consider a pregnancy to begin at conception (that is, the fertilization of the egg by the sperm), while others consider it to begin with implantation (when the embryo implants in the lining of the uterus). A 2001 Zogby International American Values poll revealed that 49% of Americans believe that human life begins at conception. Presumably many who hold this belief think that any action that destroys human life after conception is the termination of a pregnancy, and so would be included in their definition of the term "abortion." Those who believe pregnancy begins at implantation believe the term "abortion" only includes the destruction of a human being after it has implanted in the lining of the uterus.
The proposal by the HHS basically discredits the Supreme Court ruling of Roe v. Wade by making the indication that what a woman does with her body is not a private matter, but rather something the government and complete strangers would have control over. Hospital pharmacists would get away with refusing to fill prescriptions for birth control, and doctors would be able to turn away rape victims who seeks emergency contraception. Remember, this is all in the name of religion. Separation of church and state is a myth, and it always has been.

151. "Once again, (just like the Iran attack scenario) you expect me to draw conclusions from things which haven't even happened yet"
Cappy. You're dissembling.
You're all about what's going to happen. Repeatedly you've said you think we're going to attack Iran. I asked you that outright and you said yes. Do I need to go back and dig up the post? I really don't want to waste my time, but I can do it if necessary.
This question you won't go out on a limb for. Why is that?
C'mon Cappy. You wanted to discuss issues. Now's your chance.
It's a legitimate question.

Pvt neg, here is a statistic for just you:
There are only about 182 days left until "They" are gone. Obama will take the oath of office, with his hand on the bible. Sorry about not separating church and state, but you know tradition. He will have a majority in both houses. Then what will you do with yourself? Who will you be able to rant on about? The farmer will still have his Reagan but who will you have left to blame all of your misfortunes on ? Who will become your "boogey man" ? No more juntas, no more cabals, no more conspiracies. You may find out that there is a life outside of those Friday evening meetings.
Just think about it:
1440 minutes per day
or
86,400 seconds per day
for only 182 more days. Maybe you should just count the minutes as it will seem to go faster.
The clock is ticking down to the end of Pvt Neg's little world; tick, tick, tick.

Oh, by the way which test did Bobby McNamara and his whiz kids use to come up with the "number of bombs across the bow" to prevail in Southeast Asia?

Abortion is murder. Human life begins at conception. Pregnancy begins at conception. Redefining pregnancy as the moment of implantation is simply a cowardly attempt to justify the use of abortifacients. I am not torn on the issue. Doctors and nurses that participate in abortion commit murder. The mothers also commit murder, but I am far more sympathetic to a desperate, often ignorant woman than I am to a medical professional with full knowledge. I have many pro-life friends that had abortions. Most of them were unaware of the biological facts regarding human development. They did not know that there are organizations willing to help a woman in crisis pregnancy during and after the birth of the child. One such place is Beacon of Hope in Atlanta. Rape and Incest as reasons for abortion is so miniscule as to be akin to a drop of rain in the ocean. The main cause of abortion is promiscuity. If men and women waited until marriage for sex and were fully open to life; the rate of abortion would plummet. I am not perfect, but I know right from wrong. Abortion is wrong. Nothing anyone says will ever convince me otherwise. I am pro-life and committed to seeing Roe vs. Wade overturned!

I didn't do that, miss lady, and I never said that or anything about pregnancy. Read before you start cutting and pasting.
I'll say it again. Life does not begin at conception. The rest of your post is dogma that empowers you at the expense of others. If you regard abortion as murder, there is *no* position under the law that premeditated murder can be mitigated by circumstance.
This goes back to the Romans. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
You hold a double standard. And you use it to moralize. If you actually have the faith you profess, you jeopardize your mortal soul.
You're not alone. There are millions like you, but your s**t is all over the place. I couldn't begin to take you seriously until you avail yourself to modern medical science and adjust your mores accordingly.
If your religion is legit, it doesn't need you to mealymouth on its behalf, and you are half stepping whether you know it or not.

To be honest I had to look it up.
I may have seen it before but I do not recall.
I did take a statistics course once, however, it
was not the most stimulating class. Also it was a required class for the program.

not quite. do you remember what you wrote that prompted the question?
It had to do with statistical significance of sampling size. That's what the chi square test is about, and without understanding it, you're not going to be able to make sense of a statistical study or a poll.
It's cut and dried, probably around 100 years old and the basis for many type of sampling tests. If you pass a chi square, your sample was big enough to produce accurate results 995 times out of 1000.
If you didn't understand the cluster sample data from Johns Hopkins in 2004 that said there were as many as 600,000 civilian deaths in the Iraq war it's because it was also based on chi square analysis.
If you don't poll the right sample, you won't get good results, but if your samples are large enough to satisfy a chi square test, they'll be reliable. This isn't new stuff - its been around for decades.

161. Clif,
What I was getting at was the reliance on "numbers" as to how people will do or feel about something. The chi square posting on-line spoke a bout a "coin", an inanimate object.
The whole thing is about trusting numbers and letting them be the final abitrator in matters dealing with people. I do not think you would prefer to have our elections based on a "sampling".
There have been instances where the "numbers do not lie" but have been proved wrong in the end. The reliance of forecasting what people will do or how they will feel tomorrow or the day after or the day after that is not necessarily accurate. Ask yourself this, forgetting politics and the government, how many times have you seen something that was working fine but got screwed up by the "number crunchers" ? I still do not care to put myself into the hands of polls and the people who either earn their living by them or use them to prop up a position on a subject.

It happens in every industry known to man. The chi square parameters are widely accepted science like sodium benzoate or surfactants or fluorescent lights. It is simply a way of determining a statistical sample that is 100% within parameters 99.5% of the time. The only challenges I've ever heard are recent and counting yours both political.

163. Clif, I do not usually cite polls but this past week, the comic strip Mallard Filmore has been citing a N.Y.Times poll( June 29) comparing the "knowledge of news" between listeners of NPR and one of your often targeted individuals on the right. I even have problems with this poll. It does not matter which side of the aisle. I just do not want to put "blind faith" in a poll.
M2D5 at 7:49AM on Jul 24th 2008
164. Hardly scientific but perhaps indicative of the interest in general in pursuing in-depth investigations into the government's role in 9/11 would be to look at the top -10-15 "issues" of concern to most voters.
There are a number of them compiled by various outfits. As a singular subject it doesn't make the list. Perhaps it could be a component of "government corruption" or "terrorism and security". Whether or not respondents were given a list to work with, or were allowed to enter their own "issues" or not I don't know. The rankings remain pretty consistent across the 4 or 5 I looked at.
The point is that while I might respond to a poll about investigations into the government's role in 9/11 in a manner that indicates I'd be for them, or in a manner that indicates I don't believe the "lie" as Cappy calls it, it may not be a major issue to me when compared to everything else out there.
Even responses to questions such as "rate this issue in terms of importance to you", when polling on a singular subject, can be misleading. The mere fact that a polling agency is calling or mailing and asking you the questions imparts a certain level of importance to the topic. As does the respondent's relative feeling of importance because they're being polled.
Again, nothing scientific there. Just some of the reasons why I, personally, don't put a lot of faith in single subject polls. Whether they support something I believe in, or not.
