We just saw on Strollerderby that John McCain, an adoptive father himself, recently said the following, as quoted in the New York Times, "I think that we've proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don't believe in gay adoption." Strollerderby goes into all the reasons why this is ludicrous, and how gay adoption has been shown again and again to produce kids just as happy and healthy as those in straight adoptive homes. If you want to humanize this topic, just check out this amazingly great blog by two men who are foster parents to a toddler.
But it reminded us of something John Edwards (remember him?) said back in the day.
In that seminal debate discussion of gay rights led by Tim Russert, Edwards said:
I suspect my two younger children, Emma Claire, who's 9, and Jack, who's 7, will reach the same conclusion that my daughter Cate, who's 25, has reached, which is she doesn't understand why her dad is not in favor of same-sex marriage. And she says her generation will be the generation that brings about the great change in America on that issue.
He may be right. Because it's not just Democratic kids who don't have a problem with gay marriage; plenty of Republican children are as socially liberal as foxy Meghan McCain (heck, she even watches bisexual dating show A Shot at Love, as GQ discovered).
We'd be willing to bet that in another generation or two gay marriage will not only be legal, but also that people will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about.

46. ""Gayism" is a felony crime against the moral fabric of a country. An excercise in self-serving, self-limiting, unnatural, disease spreading activity."
Lizard, are you serious?
If you are born Gay, is that self serving, self limiting, unnatural, and disease spreading activity?
I didn't realize that heterosexuals aren't capable of banging each other before marriage or having a one night stand.
If you come back and say that being Gay is a choice or behavior, be prepared to answer my question, which is:
Are you attracted to both sexes, and made a choice to pick one? If you say yes to this, then I guess you are either Gay or Bisexual.
Please tell me that you are essentially a bigot and not a Christian. I can accept this.
Because if you are a Christian, you are totally lost in false teaching that isn't even funny.
Before you come back throw Romans and so forth in my face, understand that there is nothing in the Bible anywhere that says two people of the same sex can't be together in a loving faithful relationship. You won't find it anywhere.
When you start to look at Gays as people and not what they might do in the bedroom, is when you finally might start to understand our faith a little.
And before you start assuming what I am, let me just say that I'm a man married to a woman and we have 3 great kids together. We are faithful Christians part of the Christian Church or New Testament Church and are not part of diluted message from denominations.
We practice what Christ told us to practice, which is follow the first two commandments.
You should read Jesus sometime, you might get something from it. While your at it, please try to find for me where Jesus mentions Gayism.
Thanks

47. I am a LCSW for 18 years and have applied for both foster parenting and adoption and everything was fine until the big L word came up and then I was no longer competent, appropriate, the bedroom was "too colorful" guess they thought it was too many colors of the rainbow. However I knew how the system worked and knew the top dog at DHS. He put me back at the top of the list of course I still knew I had to go through the workers all of them I knew from counseling all the foster kids on my job. Several I had turned in for not bringing their kids in, that didn't help my case.
I would love to think that all this homophobia would legally go away through bills and laws however we are in the bible belt and if by some chance it does get changed I think Arkansas will hold out for a while and when it does change that does not mean the lawmakers and the ones responsible to enforce it will. There were a lot of changes when it came to womens rights and a lot of those laws are still not being enforced and we still don't even have a bill of rights for children. Should the gay and lesbian community come before the children who are being physically and sexually abused everyday and we have an incompetent system that does not protect their rights. As a lesbian in a committed relationship I would love to foster an abused child but if the laws are not changed for the children first the majority of abused children will never end up in foster care and will stay in abusive homes. And one more comment, we are very strong Christians and always have been, so enough comments from the individuals who feel they are God and feel they have the right to judge anyone! They should re-examine their bibles and see if they came out of the scene from MASH the tv show where Father Mulcalhey asks to return all the bibles because it has all the commandments opposite and it is telling everyone to commit adultery, etc.LOL

48. The Christians are just the easiest to ridicule by the liberal lefties, because the lefties (mainly TV/Print media) don't have to worry about getting their heads hacked off or live in exile for the rest of their lives for insulting Christians. Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, etc., are much stricter in their views against homosexuality, but do you see liberal media chastising them?
xx
You offend every christian who is not in your political party. What comes first, jesus or the republicans? You are mixing religion up with your very humanist need to invent a group and hate it.
If you pretend to be a christian, you have TWO commandments only, and according to your savior ALL law and prophecy pends from them.
There are NO overriding laws, so your pentateuch references are supplanted, and your references in the epistles are also supplanted by the word of your savior. There is no proscription against homosexuality in the prophets, nor is there in the gospels, just the overriding commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. This commandment is ALSO in Leviticus.
But superstition is eminently modifiable to suit the hatreds of the practitioner.
So how many of you take up the sarpint? pracice animal sacifice? Pray to the Orishas?
Christians do ALL that and more, or are you the only 'true christian'?
Your religion is all OVER the place. It's no wonder that some have a very difficult time taking you seriously, especially considering you're all really pantheists if you're fundamentalists.
Keep it out of government and I don't suppose anybody will care too much unless the sheets come on again or something like that.

49. Love this blog. And I love the discussion
here.
Before i go to my comment,a word here on being gay,and the bible.
Yes,God condemms homosexuality. Also, why Jesus does not speak much about homosexuality is because he was preaching mainly to Jews, who at that time did not have any homosexuality among them, because of the Jewish law prohibiting homosexuality.Paul talks about homosexual practice, because he was preaching to Greeks,Romans,etc-among whom homosexual behaviour was prevalent.
Secondly,God does not say being gay is bad because he hates gay and lesbian people. He loves them. And he loves them so much that he wants them to be free.
Thirdly, when one becomes a Christian, one does not get a instant freedom frm sin card.As a christian, one is always in struggle with sin.Yet,it is amark of God's love for us that He does not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. When we do fall down,He is there to pick us up.
Finally,as a christian,I am called to love my gay brethren.Even though what they do is wrong.I pray that God helps me love them. Not their sin,but they themselves
On today's blog. The best parent is one who is ready to love a child and to turn him away from the wrong. It is not a matter of sexual orientation.Gay parents don't make a gay child. And they all need jesus.

50. 26. Anthony says:"How many people would be outraged in our culture if we said that everyone else in America could marry except the Jew or African American?"
Anthony, Anthony, Anthony. Always humorous to see this analogy coming from gays. This argument is as weak as comparing a frying pan to a car battery.
If your argument is that gays are "born" gay, then what is the bi-sexual or transvestite born as? State of confusion? Also, hard as you try, there has never been any scientific evidence produced of homosexual activity in the animal kingdom. Let's use that as a basis against your claim. Incidentally, Judaism isn't a race, it's a religion; and there are plenty of white "Africans."

that is psychotic. You apparently have no boundary between fantasy and reality. I would call your position "self-serving, self-limiting, unnatural, disease spreading activity."
Since heterosexuals are just as diseased as homosexuals, you get the epiphet too. Psychosis is also a mental disease and if a psychotic influences a young person, that person will at some point need to be reprogrammed and introduced to a reality in which they can make autonomous informed decisions.

Court says 'gay' rights trump Christian rights

Here's my take... I'm sure some will disagree...
Christian "rights" actually interfere in a very real and limiting way with homosexuals enjoying the same freedoms that others enjoy.
Gay "rights" however, in no way infringe upon any right held by anyone else in the country. Christians may think they do, and they may get mad that two women hold hands in public, but in reality homosexual couples getting married and adopting children has less than ZERO impact on Christians, their rights and their lives. Sorry.
Seems like a no brainer to me.

55. "If your argument is that gays are "born" gay, then what is the bi-sexual or transvestite born as?"
Lizard do you want to discuss Gay's or Bi-sexual and transgendered individuals? Make up your mind.
People are either born Gay, Straight or Bisexual. And in some minute cases, kids are born a certain way while their brain tells them they are the opposite.
People are born the way they are and there is nothing you can do about it, and our Religion says nothing about it.
All our Religion speaks of is lust, passion and putting all that ahead of God and your Neighbor. That is a sin. Lust and passion isn't limited to Gays my friend. If we put God number one in our life, and truly love our neighbors whoever they may be, we will end up with who we are supposed to be with.
"State of confusion? Also, hard as you try, there has never been any scientific evidence produced of homosexual activity in the animal kingdom."
Nice Joke Lizard. I laughed at this one. Of course there are plenty of evidence. You won't find any in the Church though..

57. "Like I've said before, I have a photo of two baboons. It happens."
And where is the scientific research report documenting this as a TRUE established homosexual relationship between these baboons? Answer: nowhere.
What are the particulars? Captivity? Availability of opposite sex? Given the availability of the opposite sex, animals will stay heterosexual 100% of the time. Any evidence otherwise, would be as earth-shattering as finding life on another planet.

58. "Jane; your homophobia stuns me".
Ryan Anderson
Homo-, hom- (Greek: same, equal, like, similar, common; one and the same)
Phob- (Greek phobia, -phobias, -phobe, -phobiac, -phobist, -phobic, -phobism, -phobous; phobo-: fear, extreme fear of, morbid fear of, excessive fear of)
The term does not define my views on homosexuality. I fear no one. A better description would be oppose (verb to be against; to fight against…Greek: against, opposed to, preventive). I oppose any attempt to normalize homosexuality. No matter how “loving” the relationship; it is still a grave sin. It contradicts God’s plan for human sexuality and is destructive. It is neither unitive nor procreative. No civilization which has embraced it has ever survived. This is a battle between the forces of Satan and God. Satan would have us accept evil and call it good, normal, and progressive. Scripture is clear that we are to reject evil even if it means being unpopular, rejected, or ridiculed.
