Who would have thought that Elizabeth Hasselbeck and Whoopi Goldberg would begin the racial healing in this country? But I think they did start down that path. They had an interesting discussion about race on The View. Watch it here and then let's talk about how we get to a common understanding between black and white folks in this country:

1. Did think that the View would have been a good talk
if they had been able to not yell at each other.
Elizabeth had a point and not Whoopi or Barbara
seem to understand what that was. When one group
keeps up the use of N in what ever sitting, music,
friendly talk to each other, or in a put down tone,
seems that is not a good idea to continue it. But
if someone from another group says anything seems
the subject becomes to hot to handle. Could have been a very good learning lesson but sad to say it
was missed.

2. Pure BS offered from Cenk/Young Turks
The view is a ladies show where the continued debate over the "N" word seems to have continued,, going into chapter 190,347,233, and nothing resolved.

3. True Okane it is a futile debate or discussion, there is a double standard and it will always be that way. The point was proven when Jesse Jackson ridiculed Imus and supported Sharpton with the attempt at burying the word. However when he used the word it is considered "endearment". So when my seven year old comes home from school and asks why the black children call each other "niggas" I tell him it is a word of endearment between them. However you may never use the word because it will be a hate crime and you will be beaten up.

4. Could it just be that Whoopi is the dinosaur here?
She lives in a world where black folks call each other "n". She demands white folks understand that world, and the world where blacks make dogs fight to the death. Oh if you don't "get it" white person, then YOU are the racist.
Maybe Whoopi Goldberg is a has been racist from another era?

5. OK, I am blue and in a group of 100 blues.
In our town, there are 500 reds, 400 whites and 100 blues.
Years ago, the term "teal" was used by 70% of the town (red, whites and blues) to reference blues. We, the blues, didn't like it but weren't in a position to do much about it.
As the years went by, laws were passed, education took place and "our position"improved.
Use of the term "teal" was recognized as derogatory and used less and less. Currently, 10% of the reds, 10% of the whites but 30% of the blues (including blues in leadership positions) continue to use the term "teal".
If we, as blues, want to see continued improvement of our position in town, shouldn't we be first in setting examples of improvement rather than last?
Doesn't continued reference to how it was (for me and/or my ancestors) and use of old, derogatory, terms take away from being focused on and representative of how it should be?

6. Since Whoopie Goldturd lives "in a different world," maybe she'd be more comfortable in her natural habitat; the 'wonderful' continent of Africa. Oh, I get it....make millions here, with only marginal talent, then blame white people for all of your shortcomings. Whoopie is a caricature of herself, and exemplifies the stereotype.
The real story here is that Cenk had a transient moment of lucidness.

7. Maybe Whoopi's mother couldn't vote because she was a woman - not because she was black. Blacks got the vote before women did. If you read about the civil rights bill in the 60's, you will find out that the bill did not originally have 'gender' listed. It was added to try and kill the bill. The reasoning was that people would be less likely to vote for the civil rights bill if women would get equal treatment. Sexism is still a bigger issue than racism.
How long do we have to acknowledge the sins of the past? Who is saying that they did not exist? We all know they did, we all have acknowledged that they did. Yes, people are still alive that either endured it or caused it. But guess what? Forty-five years is long enough that a majority of citizens never experienced this, never saw the 'whites only' signs, etc. That goes for me and my entire generation. This year we've had more babies born than ever before - beating out 1957 as the biggest year. The 1957 babies were too young to have experienced this for the most part, and I didn't and certainly the children born for the last 40 years haven't. When can we move forward?
As for the use of the 'N' word, I agree with Hassellbeck. My kids learned that word from black children at school. I've had to have the same conversations about the double standard. They've been called 'whitey', 'cracker', etc. but couldn't fight 'fairly' with these kids. There were no consequences for that behavior. Isn't that a nice way to promote race relations? That lesson was taught in school - not in the home - and it was taught by 6th grade.

8. Hasselback is a moron. Please tell me what a rich white woman like her knows about discrimination?! Nothing! And who is she to tell anyone else (an African American at that) what she can and cannot say? Her tirade only shows her to be a clueless narcisisstic personality. As to the tears, theatrics are not your specialty, sweetie. Don't give up your day job..and grow up while you are at it.

9. OMG - Give me a break. My grandmother couldn't vote either. (white) Women didn't get right to vote til 1919. Are we still whanting and whining? We acknowledge there was racism and sexism - if we still blame this for own OWN failures - we learn nothing.

11. Whole lot white people here who are experts
at what it means to be black in America.
BOB JOHNSON at 4:05PM on Jul 19th 2008
12. I hear both sides, but, the "different" world experiences ie: growing up, is NOT a black/white issue....Jews, Poles, Irish, Japanese, Native American,,,not to mention economic differences. I fail to understane why blacks are so much more entitled to use the "race" card. Until Black Americans take responsibility NOW and change "their" community and show more respect for each other,,,,,well, I have no answers.
Vicki at 4:19PM on Jul 19th 2008
13. E needs to shut up. Wo is she to tell any race what they may or may not call each other? SHe is such an ass. If all else fails turn on the tears to try to make people you believe what you are spouting.
She needs to STFU
JUDY at 4:41PM on Jul 19th 2008
14. George Carlin is rolling in his grave. Of course it is a double standard. The question I have is, "Why does this offend white people?" Do you feel deprived by a societal prohibition against calling people, "niggers?" Do you have some barely contained desire to call people, "niggers?"
Captain Negative at 5:08PM on Jul 19th 2008
15. My whole point of making the statement about the word nigger and calling Obama etc.... niggers, is that it does hurt and should never be used. just like cracker or mother fucker. MLK had a dream that all would be treated equal. How is it an equal society when blacks are telling white people what they can say or can't say? Why have a black miss America??? why not white miss America or chinese miss America? stop the seperitisim by black african American's it's time to over come and all be equal.
