At the Republican National Convention we did a lot of interviews with people we disagreed with. Many of them were civil and interesting. Some of them were explosive. We will share a series of these interviews with you in the next several posts.
This one is a conversation with the head of a group who thinks it makes sense for gay Americans to be Republicans. As you'll see, I don't agree. It makes for an interesting conversation:

1. It doesn't make any sense for anyone to vote Republican.
They have WEAKENED the US dollar, economy, and military. THEIR war is the biggest blunder in US History! They whine about answering a few questions and make excuses for all their BS.

2. Reincarnation is real! In his last life, this guy was the President of "Jews for Hitler", AKA "The Gas Chamber Nazis". He gave his last speech in 1944 at Treblinka.

3. Cenk
President of Log Cabin is correct to work within the Republican Party to make changes in some of the policies they seek to change.
Trying to change things by rioting in the streets outside the sites of Political Conventions and seeking to disrupt the actual conventions is not the way to change things. Log Cabin is correct.
But Cenk, you did present both sides of an issue and you try that on the other 95% of your stories.
As a side note
In the interview with Bill ORielly, Obama backtracks on previous criticism of President Bush's decision to send a "surge" of 21,000 troops to Iraq. “I think that the surge has succeeded in ways that nobody anticipated,” Obama said, according to early excerpts of the interview. “I’ve already said it’s succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.”
Obama insisted so strongly that the surge did not work, that an organization of Vets from Iraq paid for and ran an ad on TV. The television advertisement underscores the commitment of our brave warriors on the battlefield, highlighting the largest re-enlistment ceremony in American history that occurred in Iraq on July 4, 2008. On that day, 1,200 brave men and women demonstrated their belief in the success of the surge, re-enlisting to continue the fight. But at the same time, some in Washington, DC, the most out spoken being Obama, refused to acknowledge the success of the surge. This ad asks them to reconsider their untenable, and counter-factual position.
Another Bush issue that Obama agrees with. Obama now agrees with Bush on FISA, the Russian invasion of Georgia NAFTA, etc., that if elected, Obama will almost be another Bush. Obama even plans to invade another country, Pakistan, to grap UBL. Obama forgets that they have nuclear weapons and could really cause a major problem for our troops. It will be interesting what change he has in his policy in dealing with Iran and nuclear weapons. Why not invade Iran after invading Pakistan?

Republican Party Platform: As Homophobic as Ever
— No sexual orientation mention in individual rights: "We consider discrimination based on sex, race, age, religion, creed, disability, or national origin to be immoral, and we will strongly enforce anti-discrimination statutes."
— Position on the military: "To protect our servicemen and women and ensure that America's Armed Forces remain the best in the world, we affirm the timelessness of those values, the benefits of traditional military culture, and the incompatibility of homosexuality with military service."
— Marriage: "Because our children's future is best preserved within the traditional understanding of marriage, we call for a constitutional amendment that fully protects marriage as a union of a man and a woman, so that judges cannot make other arrangements equivalent to it. In the absence of a national amendment, we support the right of the people of the various states to affirm traditional marriage through state initiatives...We also urge Congress to use its Article III, Section 2 power to prevent activist federal judges from imposing upon the rest of the nation the judicial activism in Massachusetts and California. We also encourage states to review their marriage and divorce laws in order to strengthen marriage."
— Specific defense of the Boy Scouts: "We support the First Amendment right of freedom of association of the Boy Scouts of America and other service organizations whose values are under assault, and we call upon the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reverse its policy of blacklisting religious groups which decline to arrange adoptions by same-sex couples."

6. Not a bad interview,
This guy Patrick held his own fairly well & was trying to offer some "middle ground" to issues where parties actually meet to resolve them. Cenk wouldn't have any of that, he wanted to convince the guy he was really a Democrat.
I'm of the opinion the Democratic party doesn't ever want this to occur. Dissension of issues is their only claim to large voting blocs at election time. The Democrats would lose 80% of their base if both parties reached a conclusion to age old mantras.
Abortion being one of those convenient chants now rearing it's head in opposition to Palin. Can't really find anything wrong, turn to a keyword & hammer the hell out of someone. The feminists are stirring within their rank & file in opposition or acceptance. Motherhood & being a good mom are themes even the diehards (at least most) don't want to attack.
I realize my argument can be flipped, but as this interview of topic shows, there's really just a fine line of people working together eliminating political theatre & getting on with the business at hand....

7. I admire gay Republicans for working within their party, and this platform is not AS homophobic as past ones. But the bottom line to the question of what McCain and the Repbublicans will do to insure basic protections for gay people against discrimination is: absolutely nothing! The reason? The right-wing that controls the party doesn't want anything that even acknowledges that gays exist. At least the Democrats have the courage to outfront include gays in their platform, policies, speeches, and mindset. The GOP can't bring itself to even say the word. How tolerant is that?
Lee at 9:32AM on Sep 5th 2008
8. Gay Republican is an oxymoron. Even their name is in the closet. Consciously or not, they help increase homophobia and do a disservice to the entire LGBT community. They support candidates and platforms who refuse to treat gay men and lesbians as equal citizens. As individuals they have the right to support whomever they want, but to use the name "gay" for which others have given so much time, money and effort to legitimize is
tragic. As someone who has been fighting for LGBT rights since the NY TIMES labeled me "an admitted homosexual", I am deeply offended.

9. "Obama forgets that they have nuclear weapons and could really cause a major problem for our troops. It will be interesting what change he has in his policy in dealing with Iran and nuclear weapons. Why not invade Iran after invading Pakistan?" Bigot
Bigot,
Why not work hand in hand with the new Administration in Pakistan, and together kick some ass and get UBL?
I'd like to get him alive, so he can tell us all of the CIA stories. That would be awesome!

Wow, boss, you sounded more like a party recruiter than interviewer. So what's your take, a few bills for each new member you sign-up and a bonus if they sign the Democrat Party loyalty oath?

Lee at 9:32AM on Sep 5th 2008>>>
Lee, you don't quite understand.
Conservatives in general, especially far righties are adamantly opposed to gay anything, it's their belief system.
Republicans actually recognize fights they can't win completely, this is one of them. It's not about that though, it's the extension of group rights once they're accepted or acknowledged.
Use the analogy, "one foot in the door". From there groups want to be mainstream, that doesn't sit well with principled fundamental conservatives.
There's no real gay bashing to speak of anymore, you hardly hear of hate crimes involving widespread bigotry. Conservatives do take exception to the "mainstream" ideal that marriage & full recognition evoke.
Don't tell yourself it's about hatred or misunderstanding, it's about preservation....

14. Hey, Sarah Palin wants to lock up women who get abortions, ban books from libraries - can locking up gays be far behind? My guess would be no. Ms. Palin is George Bush in a dress - only more of a hard liner, God help us....Keep in mind this zealot is a heartbeat away from the presidency, and her boss is a 72 year old man with skin cancer that has come back several times.
I have to believe the Log Cabin Republicans at some level are an assortment of self-loathing gay men and women..and obviously gluttons for punishment.

I've lived with Pelosi being 3rd in line, at least Palin has the fortitude to lead this country.
Maybe Pelosi could assemble a new cabinet made up of the reasonable associates from San Fran, speaking of zealots....
