The Young Turks were at the Republican National Convention all of last week and we had some interviews that were doozies, but none more entertaining than this. We interviewed Senators, Congressmen, Governors, black Republicans, gay Republicans, etc., etc. And then right at the end of the convention, this guy came up and started yelling about sodomy. He insists he is against it. You be the judge:

123. Botts: He could have phrased it where no mistake could have been made. That he didn't caused exactly what you said. One can only protect Palin so long, she has to show she can play with the big boys but how she will come off doing that is going to be a finessed accomplishment. I agree, McCain & Co. over-reacted. In his defense, when he used the term, he made the point it was Hillary's hc plan he was referring to which Obama didn't but that's a moot point now I suppose so that's my thoughts and I'm stickin' to it! :-) Ded.

124. It is astounding that "TYT's" have found even a thread of useful information from this segment. The only point of interest, is the mere fact that there are people in america who can sympathize with the hyper-focused gentleman [?] who spends too much time trying to disprove homosexuality. However, it is counterproductive to engage with someone who is completely out of reality, so as to prove a point.
We are on the verge of the most important election of generation, with massive reprecussions in the economy, class division and security, so lets try to be more effective. Gay marriage and abortion rights are about as irrelevant as it gets, when there is an endless well of viable topics discuss.

126. New Study Links Homophobia with Homosexual Arousal
WASHINGTON -- Psychoanalytic theory holds that homophobia -- the fear, anxiety, anger, discomfort and aversion that some ostensibly heterosexual people hold for gay individuals -- is the result of repressed homosexual urges that the person is either unaware of or denies. A study appearing in the August issue of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association (APA), provides new empirical evidence that is consistent with that theory.
Researchers at the University of Georgia conducted an experiment involving 35 homophobic men and 29 nonhomophobic men as measured by the Index of Homophobia scale. All the participants selected for the study described themselves as exclusively heterosexual both in terms of sexual arousal and experience.
Each participant was exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual and lesbian videotapes (but not necessarily in that order). Their degree of sexual arousal was measured by penile plethysmography, which precisely measures and records male tumescence.
Men in both groups were aroused by about the same degree by the video depicting heterosexual sexual behavior and by the video showing two women engaged in sexual behavior. The only significant difference in degree of arousal between the two groups occurred when they viewed the video depicting male homosexual sex: 'The homophobic men showed a significant increase in penile circumference to the male homosexual video, but the control [nonhomophobic] men did not.'
Broken down further, the measurements showed that while 66% of the nonhomophobic group showed no significant tumescence while watching the male homosexual video, only 20% of the homophobic men showed little or no evidence of arousal. Similarly, while 24% of the nonhomophobic men showed definite tumescence while watching the homosexual video, 54% of the homophobic men did.
When asked to give their own subjective assessment of the degree to which they were aroused by watching each of the three videos, men in both groups gave answers that tracked fairly closely with the results of the objective physiological measurement, with one exception: the homophobic men significantly underestimated their degree of arousal by the male homosexual video.

Seems like you're being overly defensive to me.
Obama having to come back the next day to castigate not only the McCain campaign but the media as well doesn't seem like part of a masterful show of gamesmanship to me.
It comes off as whining.
The proper (and most effective) response would have been for him to come back and admit to a bad choice of words. That would have negated any complaints and would have made those who got all uptight about it seem small for doing so.
Of course the downside to that would be that he might appear to be all too human.
bob at 10:31AM on Sep 11th 2008
128. Tim, with all due respect that's about as irrelevant a test as anyone could make up.
Arousal doesn't constitute acceptance. A person may get aroused in a dream state doing all sorts of abnormal activities including rape, incest, murder or take your pick. To me arousal isn't first tier thinking, it's secondary reaction.
The brain & subconscious is hardwired in normal patterns. When people see a bus approaching, they don't step off the curb to walk across the street. Once in awhile someone does, is that normal or accepted or a result of something deeper?
If in a drunken stupor, upon a bet someone let a goat back up to them & they rubbed against it long enough, they might get aroused. Once out of that drunken stupor upon learning what they did from their sick buddies that person would have a lot to live down & explain. I doubt if he'd go back that evening for a "second hit" in a normal state of mind. Not the best comparisons, but you catch my drift.
Bogus research like this proves nothing. What it is is "recruitment" to gather acceptance. Groups supporting their agenda through any type of research & you have just enough people that "bite" in the name of science to forward their cause.
That's what we do now, we argue invalid points & we get nowhere in the meantime arguing them. We try to outwit the other side with superiority instead of ever reaching a consensus.
This is why normal people resist so much to fringe thinking. It confuses the masses & fundamentals. The 'normal' majority doesn't want to have to question who they are or their reactions. When you finally screw everyone's minds up with these types of 'studies' true human nature has to be measured instead of natural commonplace....

131. bob,
You're a rational guy. Why spin this? You know what happened. Your stance on this is ridiculous. I'll elaborate.
"Seems like you're being overly defensive to me."
How so? I believe the response from the McCain campaign was overly defensive considering what was said had nothing to do with what they claimed. Their response was to divert attention away. Even you know this. It's the Republican way. This is how they campaign at lest in recent memory. It's going to backfire if they keep doing it.
"Obama having to come back the next day to castigate not only the McCain campaign but the media as well doesn't seem like part of a masterful show of gamesmanship to me."
What do you want him to do? Say nothing? He called it for what it was. Complete foolishness.
"It comes off as whining."
I believe you're referring to McCain's ad. Right?
"The proper (and most effective) response would have been for him to come back and admit to a bad choice of words."
But they weren't a bad choice of words. That's what YOU would hope for because it would be an admittance of something he didn't do. No need to apologize. The context was correct, and the phrase was correct. What makes this foolish, is that McCain has said this phrase countless times in the right context as well. Maybe his campaign did this without his knowledge. If they did the research, I don't they would have sent out that ad. McCain is getting scolded in the last 24 hours. As he should be.
The context: You can't call it change when you have the same exact policies on the important issues. A pig is still a pig even if you put lipstick on it. How true that statement is. Nowhere and I mean nowhere did he mention Gov. Palin. It was all about McCain and his Policies and lack of Change.
"That would have negated any complaints and would have made those who got all uptight about it seem small for doing so."
Wrong. Completely wrong. By not apologizing, and coming out defending it, has now shown how small it was to protest something that wasn't true, just for the sake of being negative. His ads this week has been full of lies, misleads and downright false assumptions. It looks like Rove is earning his paycheck I guess.
"Of course the downside to that would be that he might appear to be all too human."
He has been the only candidate to show his all too human qualities. McCain is one of the saddest cases I've seen. He stood up and said that he was going to run an honorable campaign and stay away from lies, distortions, misleads, and negativity. After all, it was all of those mentioned, that ruined his 2000 campaign. Now, he is doing the opposite of what he said, and has hired those same people that slandered him to his campaign.
This shows his character and integrity. It shows what he is all about. This is nothing to be proud of, and shows exactly why he would be a horrible President.
Botts at 11:05AM on Sep 11th 2008
132. Botts,
I'm spinning nothing. You're the one who initially suggested he did it intentionally to get McCain to react. Now you're saying that it had nothing to do with that.
So which is it?
