Congratulations to six-time Super Bowl winner (and seven-time nominee!) Pittsburgh Steelers. I had the good fortune of attending Super Bowl XL, when the Steelers last won. Media day was a blast:
Then I reported on game day. It seems like only yesterday that I was hanging with Stevie Wonder, then-top draft pick Matt Leinart, and soon-to-be disgraced Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick:
But then as now, I wondered: Why don't the Steelers have cheerleaders? Apparently there was a squad of Steelerettes from 1961-1970. What happened to them?
Now that the Steelers are the winningest team in football, don't they deserve to be cheered in an organized fashion? I ask you, what would Steelers cheerleaders look like?

61. The Steelers are a real football team with real fans and don't need cheerleaders like some of the lesser cities' football teams. The steelers play well enough to keep the focus on the field.

63. I have lived in Pittsburgh ALL OF MY LIFE and I bleed black and gold....
that being said... the Steelers have one of the largest female followings of the NFL... why would I want to watch some half naked bimbos bounce around when I can look at the hotness that is Big Ben, Hines Ward, etc. Especially when I know that they didn't find those half naked sluts in Western PA (cause we dont look like that). Real Pittsburgh women watch football, eat Primanti's sandwiches, and drink beer.
Anyways, the Roneys have said that the reasons the Steelers dont have cheerleaders is because we have such a good team that they dont need to distract their fans from awful playing with cheerleaders.
But seriously... this isn't Texas or Florida. The temp here during the playoffs was in the single digits.

64. most women in the north are fat and ugly only because of sheer numbers are there a few good looking ones i live in the south a few years ago my youngest daughter played fastpitch softball we went to a tourament up north and the best looking women i saw were the mothers of the other girls on our team and they were all at least 40 . i pointed this out to our coach and some other fathers on the team and they all agreed and then they commended me for bringing it to their attention

65. People making comments about fat ugly Steeler cheerleaders have no idea about Steeler fans. They wouldn't stand for such a thing. They demand perfection at all times. Look at Terry Bradshaw. He lead the team to four Super Bowl titles. As with everyone age started catching up with him and his play diminished. At that point those great fans started screaming obscenities and throwing objects at Bradshaw. Such class acts would have to have fine cheerleaders. BTW comments about cheerleaders being exploited women are stupid.

66. When you have a football team that's worth watching, you don't need the distraction of cheerleaders.

67. I have wondered about that, "why don't the Steelers have a cheerleading team? Maybe the team owner does not want to pay the cheerleaders salaries. Sounds to me the owner just want to hold expenses down and stay with putting a winning team together. So, that will make the cheerleading team a low priority and insignificant. But ... from a public relation point of view, it might not be such a bad idea for the Steelers to have a cheerleading team.

68. The Steelers won 6 Superbowls without cheerleaders. Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

69. Pittsburgh Steelers do not need to have cheerleaders. They have the movement, the build, the grace, the speed, the game and the trophy. I lived in that wonderful city for 17 years and what I learned the first week I was there was that the women take their sports, especially the Steelers as seriously as the men. It's the only town where women have their season's tickets year in and year out - they get passed through wills to the next generation. A woman might get married and guess what? She's at the football game while her husband is at home. WAY TO GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, way to go, Women of Pittsburgh, Men of Pittsburgh, you still grow the best of the best people up there - genuine, real, warm and wonderful. But you have some of the worst weather on the planet!

70. wtg john .. real men dont need cheerleaders , they draw the crowd on their own WTG STEELERS.. leave the frills to the more sissy teams..
bonnie at 6:43PM on Feb 7th 2009
71. The Steelers already have cheerleaders....we're called the Steeler Nation and we are really and truly EVERWHERE. We wear parkas and know the end zone from our elbows. Lesser teams have mini-skirts. They need all those legs to distract from the stupid plays on the field.

72. #64,mpm 80,
No offense to you personally, but as one who travels extensively through the South on business , what passes for beauty in the South is big hair, small brains, and LOTS of make-up. We Pittsburghers like our women to be actual people, not dolls. We like our football team to PLAY FOOTBALL. What you see is what you get. Try it sometime...it's nice to be real.

73. Professional cheerleaders have been become poor role models for girls. It's no longer a sport. The sexual exploitation of their clothing, photos, calendar shots, etc. have gone too far and isn't right. What kind of message are we sending to our kids?
I deeply respect the Steelers for not having cheerleaders. It's respectful to ALL fans ( sorry pervs) and creates better role models to follow...and our society needs that.
Mary at 8:27PM on Feb 10th 2009
74. You people are idiots thinking that the Steelers or any NFL team don't want the cheerleaders...it's the other way around. Cheerleaders don't want them. Why would they want to stand around frozen tundra, not able to show their bodies off for better paying money. They get virtually nothing from NFL teams that do hire them in warm weather. That's why you'll never see them, morons!

75. being a dweller of the great city of Pittsburgh, the mentioned ideal cheeleader profile is pretty spot on. however, it's likely that nobody else can put down the can of Iron City to come up with a decision about this very important issue.
