Peevish Persians

The art advisor to Iranian President Ahmadinejad is in a huff over the film "300" and its portrayal of the Persian armies held at bay by 300 fearless Spartans.

What's the problem? First off it's historical fact. Secondly, while the Persian fighters might not have the six-packs that the Spartans do, they do have cooler piercings and better tans. By the way, according to my personal trainer Jamie, the Spartans had to be roided up. You cannot, he insists, get a six-pack just by doing crunches.

Ahmadinejad should be flattered that American audiences are interested enough in their history - and grateful that the Persians were not portrayed as middle-aged paunchy bikers. (Scientologist John Travolta as Persian leader Xerxes = Instant Fatwa.) Would he have preferred that Eddie Murphy play every role? (In a different movie, Murphy as a fiery Ayatollah Khomeini would rock.)

Most of all the Iranians should be relieved that Matt Stone and Trey Parker didn't turn turn their heroes into puppets first. (Makes you wonder: was Kim Jong Il tortured by Team America? Or is he such an egomaniac that he loves any attention?)
