Why Rudy Giuliani Lost
The short answer -- because no one likes him:
Seriously, it's such a relief to have Giuliani out of the race. I don't try to predict who would be easier to beat in the general election. I think there's folly in that exercise. I would rather have the Republicans pick the best possible candidate, on the off chance that they accidentally win. So, I'm very thankful Giuliani is out of the race now. He was by far the biggest threat to civil liberties and the most likely to start the next war. Good riddance.

Latinos Will Decide This Election

John McCain won the Florida primary on Tuesday night on the strength of the Latino vote. He beat Romney 50-16 in that category and this helped to his 5 point win in this primary. Mitt Romney was vocal in his opposition to any sensible immigration plan, instead preferring tough talk about keeping people out of the country and sending them back. Well, guess who's being sent back now?
And this is a Republican primary in a state where most of the Latino voters are Cuban (who have more favorable immigration laws applied to them). Imagine what's going to happen to a Republican candidate in the general election? At least McCain was on the right side of a sensible immigration proposal in the Senate. For this, he has been scorned by the Republican pundits, talk show hosts and bloggers. But in reality, he is the Republican Party's only chance. If they send up a hater like Romney, they're going to get whooped in November.
We broke down the Florida results early last night and noticed how big the disparity in the Latino vote was in the exit polls:
Also, it's a pleasure to bid Rudy Giuliani goodbye. He was the most crazed Republican in the field with his consistent fear and war mongering. Huckabee might be even crazier, but Rudy was the most likely to start the next war and curtail more civil liberties. So, Florida let a little sunshine into the country by getting rid of the dark and ominous candidacy of Rudy Giuliani.

Here's something I wrote last June, after Mike Bloomberg switched his party affiliation to Independent, fueling speculation that he might run for President. (Re-posting this gives me time to work on my Miley Cyrus post.):
I have a major political crush: His name is Mike Bloomberg. And now it looks like he may make a run for President as an Independent.
First a quick word about former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani: It's fashionable to trash him as a mean, divisive guy who unfairly exploits the grief that occasioned 9/11 and the gratitude all of us felt for someone who was in charge at all.
Giuliani is all of those things. But he did something monumental with New York before 9/11. He took a city that certainly felt out of control and showed that it could be governed. A gigantic feat. I would have been perfectly happy if Time Magazine had selected him as Man of the Year - again, for what he did pre-9/11. (And to those who say they miss the "earthiness" or "grit" of the former Times Square: Please move to Newark.)
Without Giuliani there would be no Mayor Bloomberg, because without him, New York would be a messy house divided against itself every which way - the kind of morass that no one with Bloomberg's talent would want to manage. The rewards would be too meager.

When Going On the Offense Goes Wrong
When Rudy Giuliani was asked about the turmoil in Pakistan, he answered that we need to "go on the offense." That is so painfully stupid. What does he mean? Go on the offense against who? Does he want us to invade Pakistan? And whose side would we be on there?
This guy is running for president. These kind of ridiculous comments should eliminate him from consideration, but in the Republican primaries these statements take the place of thoughtful commentary on foreign policy. It's really sad to see what has happened to what used to be a very reasonable party. After all, it was just 15 years ago when George H. W. Bush, James Baker and Brent Scowcroft ran probably the best foreign policy team in our lifetimes. My, how the mighty have fallen.
Look at the short video below to see why going on the offense can prove to be a disastrous idea in foreign policy:
Of course, if you want further examples, you could just look at our own occupation of Iraq. The Iraq War is going to cost us $2.4 trillion when all is said and done. For what? Does anyone in America really believe it was worth it? And there are so-called legitimate candidates for president still talking about going on the offense! God help us all if any of these clowns ever make into office.

Should A President's Mistress Get Secret Service Protection?
It happened yesterday at 11:16.39 am ET. At that moment the campaign for the American presidency passed into the surreal.
At that second Tim Russert, host of NBC's Meet The Press, asked Republican Rudy Giuliani, a man endorsed by evangelist Pat Robertson: "Would it be appropriate for a president to provide secret service protection for his mistress?" The answer is not important. (It was hard to decipher anyway.) But the fact that this question - a reasonable one - was being asked at all of the leading candidate from the party of values was, um, wacky.
(The question comes at 3:38 in the clip below.)
The question came more than three-quarters of the way through an hour-long interview that concentrated on Rudy's business ties, Bernie Kerik's shenanigans and most salaciously the issue of taxpayer-financed protection for wife #3 Judith Nathan, when she was still just a mistress.
God bless Tim Russert. Remember all the bitching and moaning from Hillary's people after Russert grilled her during a debate last month? That should die down after the interrogation that Rudy underwent from Russert yesteday during Meet The Press. A friend of mine who's worked on MTP tells me that Russert is so intense he sweats while prepping for his interviews - not from nervousness, but from the sheer mental workout he puts himself through. He's the definition of rigor.
So what do you think?

Can Giuliani Recover From His 'Jonah' Gaffe?
When last night's debate turned to the subject of the Bible, we thought: Okay, this is an easy one. Let's just see who thumps the loudest. It's not like anyone trying to win the Republican nomination is going to say anything but that it's the word of God, right? Huckabee played it smart: "The Bible is the revelation of an infinite God, and no finite person is ever gonna fully understand it. If they do, their God is too small."
Romney, who seemed to be trying very, very hard not to allude to his Mormonism, said, in an almost robotic fashion: "The Bible is the Word of God, absolutely."
Giuliani, on the other hand:
Worst of Giuliani
I'll be open and honest, I am not a fan of Rudy Giuliani, now I know it's the beginning of a long political year for America and the last thing you voters need is an opinion from a 26 year old stoner Canadian, but I will try anyway. Not too long ago I posted a video clip on AOL that talked about the whole Giuliani-Fox News saga, it was late at night and within minutes I got some pretty unwelcoming feedback, including ones that accused me of attempting to "swiftboat," I hated those swiftboaters. In reality I didn't know much about the case and was simply attracted to the sexy headline, my conscience got the best of me and I pulled the post before dawn broke.
Today is a new day.
It simply blows my mind that Americans appear to love this guy, he is always at the top of polls and he is treated like a national hero despite the fire fighters efforts to set the record straight. Sometimes Americans should look beyond their National media to learn about how the world is looking at these candidates. Just yesterday, on videosift.com in the Election 2008 channel, an 8 Minute report from UK's Channel 4 hit the front page. This clip argues that Giuliani is loved because of the emotional attachment Americans have with him. That emotional attachment appears to trump the reality of Giuliani's record (which would explain the 9/11 card he plays almost always.) This clip below includes an interview with another former NY mayor who would argue that Rudy was not solely responsible for reducing crime in NY, It also touches on the Mafia ties, the private elevator in the WTC (to sneak his mistress in) and a laundry list of complaints from 9/11 rescue workers and fire fighters. The list goes on, check out this detailed wikipedia entry and wonder if American could do better..Just watch it and pass it along to your friends who are voting for Rudolph.

Does Rudy Giuliani Agree with Pat Robertson That We Deserved 9/11?
Pat Robertson has endorsed Rudy Giuliani. And Giuliani is very proud of this endorsement. So, we have to ask -- does Giuliani agree with Pat Robertson's interpretation of why we were attacked on 9/11:

Rep. Rangel Attacks Giuliani's Character
Talking to Wolf Blitzer yesterday, Rep. Charlie Rangel slammed Giuliani's personal life: "Two people, six spouses. It's a little complicated if you're not religious, especially if you're running against a Mormon." He also described some of the former mayor's other weaknesses, besides his disastrous personal life, like flip-flopping on everything from gun control to birth control. How to Make a Zen Giuliani

Continuing in our series of Pimp My Candidate: Herbal Remedies Edition...
Rudy Giuliani is maintaining his lead in the race for the GOP nomination. He's a stronger candidate than many expected.
I have always been a defender of Giuliani's tenure as New York City's mayor. His legacy is greater than any singular achievement - and there were many of those: reducing crime, cleaning up the city, revitalizing the tourist industry. But Rudy's grand legacy is that he showed that New York City could actually be governed. Make no mistake, this was in serious doubt before he took office. New York seemed to be in free fall in the early '90s.
That said, Rudy can be mean, divisive, vindictive. He likes to pick fights. And right now the United States doesn't need to be picking any more fights.
Rudy needs to find inner peace, tranquility. It's time to restore the balance of Rudy's mind, body, and spirit ... to right the flow of Rudy's chi... It's all about good energy... Watch and learn ...

Giuliani Says He'd Be 'Prepared' for an Alien Attack
While campaigning in New Hampshire yesterday, Rudy Giuliani was asked what he would do if the U.S. were attacked by aliens. CNN reports that he replied, "Of all the things that can happen in this world, we'll be prepared for that. Yes we will . . . We'll be prepared for anything that happens."In what way could Giuliani's administration possibly prepare the country for an attack by aliens? Or, for that matter, for "anything that happens"? Anything? How about an attack from Mars and a Depression and a nuclear attack, all on the same day? We don't buy it.
Isn't this just further evidence of Rudy's incredible arrogance?
Pimp My Candidate: Rudy Giuliani's Lisp

Rudy Giuliani has a lisp. If he's elected, he will be our first President with a lisp. (Lincoln had a thin reedy voice. Chester Alan Arthur was a stammerer. Neither had lisps.) This is no small thing in a political culture in which the smallest flaws are magnified: Hillary's Cackle ... Thompson's baggy eyes ... Obama's mole ... Chris Dodd's James-and-the-Giant-Peach-sized head ...
Full disclosure: I have a lisp.
This week I sat down with eminent speech pathologist and accent coach Sam Chwat, director of New York Speech Improvement Services, to talk about Rudy's lisp. Sam is also known as "the Speech Therapist to the Stars": he helped Julia Roberts shed her Southern drawl and was dialect coach to Robert De Niro when he needed an Appalachian accent for Cape Fear.
Sam is confident that Rudy could eliminate his lisp in just a few sessions. He knows of what he speaks, I suppose, and Rudy has a legendary work ethic. Still, losing a lisp is no simple task ... (Don't ask me to say that last sentence.)
