Whose Fake Laugh is Worse -- McCain or Hillary?

Posted May 10th 2008 6:42PM by Cenk Uygur
Filed under: Young Turks, John McCain, Hillary Clinton, Video

There are two interesting things that came out of John McCain's last appearance on The O'Reilly Factor. One, he clearly lied about voting for Bush in 2000. Arianna Huffington said earlier this week that he told a table full of guests at a dinner they had together that he did not vote for Bush in the 2000 general election. Since then, there have been four other witnesses that corroborated Huffington's story to The Washington Post, New York Times and LA Times.

That's part of the reason why McCain looks and sounds so nervous below, which leads to the second interesting point. He has entered the maniacal laughter competition with Hillary Clinton. His laugh below is so forced and awkward that it's a little painful to look at. So, check out the video below and then tell us who has the weirder laugh, McCain or Hillary:

Steve Wilder of Omaha Nebraska woke up suffocating due to complications from throat cancer. The radiation treatments he received years ago resulted in scar tissue, which Wilder says left him with a "shrunken throat." But he decided to take matters into his own hands when he grabbed a steak knife and made a quarter-inch incision that saved his life. Watch the video for more details!

John McCain's Un-American, Criminal, Thug Supporter

Posted May 6th 2008 11:12PM by Cenk Uygur
Filed under: Young Turks, John McCain, Barack Obama, Video

The title of this post might seem like an exaggeration. How could Saint John McCain have a friend and supporter who is a criminal, a thug and far more un-American than Reverend Wright? This man we're talking about even worked actively to undermine the American system of government -- and was convicted for it. And John McCain calls him a dear friend. You don't believe it, watch and hear the quotes for yourself:

Here is the story that has all this information and the links that link to the original stories. Now, I know a lot of people will think, "This doesn't count." But think about that. Why don't you think it counts?

There are three reasons: 1. You already know this guy so you feel like it's old news. But that doesn't make his actions or his words any less despicable. 2. He is white. Admit it; it sounds a lot more dangerous to you if it's a black radical calling for people to shoot the heads off of federal agents 3. He's a Republican, so we know they don't play fair and he was just trying to give his party an advantage. Now imagine how you and the media would react if you heard Obama's staff broke into McCain's headquarters (or Hillary's) in the middle of the night and stole his most important campaign information. And Obama later said the people who did that are his dear friends and he is proud to be associated with them.

Look, you know the answers to these questions. You know that it would be different if it was a black Obama supporter who had done any of these things. I don't think everything is about racism, not by a long shot; but aren't some things? And if that's not the right explanation here (and it might not be), what is the reason behind this incredible double standard that is applied to Obama and McCain backers?

O'Reilly Hands Hillary Her Ass on Torture Debate

Posted May 5th 2008 8:05PM by Cenk Uygur

The Democrats going on Fox News Channel is a terrible idea for many reasons. They legitimize a propaganda outlet for the Republican Party by agreeing to the fiction that they are a real news organization. They field twisted and slanted questions that set them up for answers that will later be used against them.

Obama fell into this trap last week when he told Chris Wallace that the Rev. Wright controversy was a legitimate political issue. He is trying to be nice to a Fox News anchor, which is just stupid. He is going to use it against you! And he already has. Wallace used Obama's statements to justify several more questions he asked Howard Dean about Rev. Wright this weekend.

But the one reason I never found persuasive for not going on Fox is that the Democrats can't handle it. But there's some chance I'm wrong about that. You can't go and talk to Bill O'Reilly if you're not prepared to challenge him on the obvious bullcrap he's going to toss your way. And that's exactly what Hillary Clinton did. She went in unprepared and pretty much lost a debate on torture. Watch below:

One of our viewers, Tony Daughtrey, made a good point after watching this on our show. O'Reilly keeps calling waterboarding a dunk in the water. You know who else we used to dunk in the water to get confessions? Witches.

Does O'Reilly think we got reliable information out of those women by dunking them in the water during the Salem Witch Trials? Remember, they almost all confessed. So, I guess they must have all been witches after all.

There's a reason why we don't torture people anymore. It's barbaric and useless. They'll tell you whatever you want to hear -- I did it, Iraq is connected to Al Qaeda, I'm a witch, I'm a terrorist, etc., etc.

Finally, we invaded Iraq based on the faulty intelligence we got from one of the guys we tortured. You can read about it here. That wrong information cost the lives of countless people. Is it too much to ask Democrats that they at least learn that one fact and bring that up the next time someone attempts an asinine defense of torture?

Hate Sermon by Evangelical Preacher

John McCain recently received the endorsement of Reverend John Hagee. McCain said he was very proud to get that endorsement and just last week reiterated on ABC that he was glad to have it. Now, look at the unbelievable and hate-filled sermon of Reverend Hagee below:

How do people get away with this kind of perversion of Christianity? At least, I hope it's a perversion. Because if that's what people think Christianity truly stands for, that's very scary. You can watch the longer version of this sermon here to get the full context. Trust me, it doesn't get any better, it only gets worse.

If other Christians don't stand up against people like Hagee, what does that say about Christianity?

And what does it say about John McCain that he is proud to be associated with this guy?

Six Degrees of Barack Obama

Posted May 1st 2008 11:38AM by Cenk Uygur
Filed under: Media, Young Turks, Barack Obama, Video

The right-wing and the media are playing a game called Six Degrees of Barack Obama. This is where they try to connect anyone who has ever said or done anything controversial to Barack Obama and then ask Obama to denounce and reject them. It is a guilt by association hatchet job that leaves the false impression that Obama agrees with these folks.

You can play this game with anyone, but so far they have only done it to Obama. Is Obama supposed denounce and reject everyone he has ever met just in case they've done something stupid in their lives? How many people do you know that you would have to denounce if you were subjected to this same scrutiny? I'd have to eliminate at least half my family and friends. Do you know anyone who doesn't have family, friends or associates who have said things that would sound really bad if the media repeated them over and over on TV?

Go ahead, play Six Degrees of Barack Obama and see if you can connect yourself to Obama and find out whether he has to denounce and reject you as well:

Obama Should Claim to be More Patriotic Than McCain

Today on the show we were talking about how Fox News was questioning Barack Obama's patriotism and how I thought he didn't do a great job of debunking stories that go the heart of this charge. The problem is that by answering the question he feeds into the question. He should turn the whole premise of the question on its head.

Obama shouldn't talk about whether he is or is not patriotic. He should talk about how he is clearly the most patriotic candidate in the race:

Why Hillary's Popular Vote Argument is 100% Nonsense

Posted Apr 28th 2008 10:57AM by Cenk Uygur

There are several overwhelming reasons why Hillary Clinton's argument's about the popular vote is absolute nonsense. She argues that she is winning the popular vote and that is what should matter in figuring out who the nominee will be. Neither one of these things is remotely true for the reasons we explain below:

Hillary Clinton Struts After Scoring Meaningless Fourth Quarter Touchdown

Posted Apr 24th 2008 11:36AM by Cenk Uygur
Filed under: Young Turks, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Video

Yesterday on the show, our producer, Jayar Jackson asked just the right question -- why are we still talking about the appearance of Hillary Clinton's victory in Pennsylvania? Doesn't the fact that she only picked up nine delegates from the race do very little for her? If so, why bother discussing whether she has momentum?

We explain below why the appearance of momentum is important in these elections in general and why it's irrelevant and won't help Hillary Clinton at all now.

Of course, Senator Clinton is also addressing her points about momentum and electability to the super-delegates, which is a different kind of voting. But she's losing in that race as well. She argues to these Democratic leaders that she is more electable. If that's the case, then why isn't she winning?

Phil Donahue Says This War Disrespects Our Troops

Posted Apr 23rd 2008 10:58AM by Cenk Uygur

Phil Donahue was on our show yesterday to talk about his new award winning documentary, Body of War. It's the story of one wounded vet who has come back from Iraq to fight against what's happening. During the interview, he made a great point about the war -- it's an insult to our troops to be unconcerned about the human costs of this war because it's only the volunteer US troops who are dying and getting maimed for life.

You can watch the whole interview by clicking here or watch a short clip from the interview below:
