Dirty Water
Chinese villager Guo Yijing, who is suffering from cancer of the esophagus, stands in front of his house in Yangji Township where a chemical plant is located and about 76 villagers have died of cancer in the past five years, on July 17, 2007. Mass water pollution incidents are on the rise as China's environment deteriorates. A State Council executive meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao stressed the need to amend the existing law on handling of water pollution, allowing for harsher punishment for illegal practices.
