Another Horrible Bus Attack!

What is going on with buses in Canada?

A woman just attacked a Toronto bus driver with a hammer for not dropping her off soon enough, the AP reports.

Our theory: Greyhound jinxed the industry with that marketing campaign "There's a reason you've never heard of bus rage."

They pulled the ads after the recent Greyhound bus decapitation in Manitoba, but not soon enough to remove the bus rage curse . . .

More following up of the Canadian Torture List controversy that's stirred things up around here a little. Since the US, Guantanamo and Israel are being removed from the list, Iran now calls our list biased, got that link via an editorial from Seattle.

TRN spoke with Michael Ratner and asked for some background and details in regards to the controversy.

Canada's CN Tower Eclipsed

Sad news to report from the wintry tundra: it appears the United Arab Emirates massive project "Burj Dubai" has reached 555 meters, which is two meters taller then the 30 year old Canadian phallus we call the CN Tower. This development dethrones the CN Tower as the largest free standing structure in the world. What this will do to the Canadian psyche? We'll have to wait and see.

Here is a random Youtube video with images of the Burj Dubai, but even more interesting is an image that highlights the massive commercial changes of Dubai between 1991 and 2005.

Today is Canada Day, therefore, as soon as I complete this post I will be joining most Canadians by cracking a beer and enjoying the day in the sun. I believe about 98% of those who read AOL blogs are American so this is a great opportunity for me to introduce you to a little bit of Canadian Culture.

First off here is a collection of "Canadian Heritage Moments" , these shorts have been running since 1991 and every Canadian by now is very familiar with each one. These shorts should help you learn a little bit more about Canada. If you want to dig deeper into the heritage moments wikipedia is always the best start.

"Tag Series" is currently in it's 14th week, I've been maintaining this small competition over on my Blog, it was created all in good fun as a way for visitors to vote on the types of clips they would like to see. It'll be my weekend project here at NB.

Myself, like many others, use Tagging as a way to bookmark and categorize websites. These displays of bookmarks prove to be great Archives of information for those who seek it. If you like the voting and interaction aspect then I will also direct you ever growing tag archives on Netscape, which is an interactive social news community.

Remember you can vote once every 24hrs. Results will be tallied at the end of the week and the winner will be forever remembered in the TayTV Hall of Champions.

Why I Can't Trust Stephen Harper

As odd as it seems I don't follow Canadian politics half as much as I do American politics, I do know that I have never been a fan of Stephen Harper. And this Interview with TSN's Gord Miller pretty much sealed the deal. With Ottawa in the Stanley Cup final, Miller visited the PM's residence to talk hockey. Gord was sure to drill the PM about the fact that he's a Maple Leaf fan, it's a known fact, Harper just won't admit it. But the Evidence is piling up.

- Harpers Favourite Jersey is a Maple Leaf Jersey
- Harper Grew up in Toronto and his family are Toronto fans

- TSN has footage of Harper cheering for the leafs during an Ottawa/Toronto game from earlier in the season.

Harper still won't simply say "I am a Toronto fan".. What the fuck? Just say it man. Does he think we're all idiots? How can I trust this guy? How can you claim to be passionate about anything if you don't have the balls to say the name of your favourite hockey team?

With a completely different scenario everybody's pal
George Stroumboulopoulos got pissed off at Harper (I think the clip is from June '06), again for treating Canadians like idiots. This little snippet reminded me of Bush for some reason so alongside Stroumbo's video is an article from the Tyee circa 2005 about how Harper and Bush share the same Strauss philosophy.

Harper, Bush Share Roots in Controversial Philosophy - Tyee
Nov 2005

What do close advisors to Stephen Harper and George W. Bush have in common? They reflect the disturbing teachings of Leo Strauss, the German-Jewish émigré who spawned the neoconservative movement.

Strauss, who died in 1973, believed in the inherent inequality of humanity. Most people, he famously taught, are too stupid to make informed decisions about their political affairs. Elite philosophers must decide on affairs of state for us.

In Washington, Straussians exert powerful influence from within the inner circle of the White House. In Canada, they roost, for now, in the so-called Calgary School, guiding Harper in framing his election strategies. What preoccupies Straussians in both places is the question of "regime change."

Strauss defined a regime as a set of governing ideas, institutions and traditions. The neoconservatives in the Bush administration, who secretly conspired to make the invasion of Iraq a certainty, had a precise plan for regime change. They weren't out to merely replace Saddam with an American puppet. They planned to make the system more like the U.S., with an electoral process that can be manipulated by the elites, corporate control over the levers of power and socially conservative values.

Iraq 2.0

Soldiers denied access to YouTube - Press Association

Gen Bell said: "This recreational traffic impacts our official DoD network and bandwidth ability, while posing a significant operational security challenge".

I subscribe to George Stroumboulopoulos youtube channel and today while perusing his videos from his CBC program "The Hour". I came across this interview with Myspace.com creator Tom Anderson. My brows raised when I heard that Myspace along with a handful of other websites were being censored to anybody using department of defence computers, it appears they have stressed their bandwidth? The Young Turks asked "What Could $456 Billion buy?"... I would say maybe a better computer system, one that functions better then my cheap laptop.

The Search Engine Journal gives a list of all the sites that were banned. I couldn't help but to notice All the sites that are banned have internet twins, it's like banning your soldiers from drinking coke but telling them Pepsi is OK.

Twins - Banned ---> Not Banned
So if your scratching your head about what that decision will accomplish in the end, I'm sure your not alone. This next story might make you scratch your head even more. My friend Jon here will explain.

Don't like Jon? Here is a BBC article from last week. So in the same way that I subscribe to "The Hour" , you can subscribe to a channel presented by the American Military. it's gotten over 3,000 subscribers in just over a week.

Here is one of the Iraq war scenes your military doesn't want your military to watch. As presented by MNF Iraq.
Multi-National Force - Iraq established this YouTube channel to give viewers around the world a "boots on the ground" perspective of Operation Iraqi Freedom from those who are fighting it.
