Katie Couric Calls Out McCain On His Claim of Winning Wars

Katie Couric asked John McCain a great question the other day on CBS: You claim you know how to win wars? Which wars have you won?

Watch it here:

I asked the press to put this very question to John McCain about ten days ago, albeit in a little bit more colorful language. You can watch that here. There is no good answer for this because John McCain is taking credit for many things he had no part in or was only minimally involved with. He is way overplaying his so-called national security credentials.

Some might think I'm going a bit too far in pointing this out, but we should also remember John McCain crashed five different planes in his time in the service. He also finished 894th in his Annapolis class of 899. God bless him for serving anyway, but it's hard to take that record and brag about how you have won all these wars.

John McCain has a service record he can be proud of, that anyone could be proud of. His resistance at the POW camps was down right heroic. But when you put yourself out there as the man who knows military strategy and winning wars, we have to look at your record and see what's really in there.

And when you look, there is not some secret stash of wars that John McCain led troops into and won because of his national security know-how. There just isn't and when he pretends there is, it looks like forced braggadocio. If he sticks with his actual service record, he would have something everyone could agree was a big asset for him. He served with tremendous courage and honor. He doesn't also have to claim to be Dwight D. Eisenhower. Leave well enough alone.

Charles Barkley Calls Conservatives "Fake Christians"

I love Charles Barkley. I was a Republican at the same time he was and we both left the party at the same time. We left the GOP when, as Barkley puts it, "they lost their minds."

In the video below you'll see the Charles Barkley interview on CNN where he goes after the hypocritical conservatives. If you keep watching, you'll also see an explanation of why it doesn't make any sense to say you supported both Bush Sr. and Bush Jr.:

Democratic Presidential Candidate Calls for Legalizing Cocaine

We had Senator Mike Gravel on The Young Turks this morning. He is one of the Democratic presidential candidates and a former senator from Alaska. As you can see in the clip below, he admits to using marijuana and cocaine (God bless him for his honesty). He is not the least bit embarrassed about this or reluctant to share his story.

He then says we should legalize not only marijuana, but harder drugs like cocaine.

The whole interview with Senator Mike Gravel can be seen here.

Blackwater - America's Private Army

Blackwater was involved in a couple battles last week. I'm pretty new to the idea of private mercenaries. If you are anything like me you might think the "Private Contractors" in Iraq are the people who are preparing meals for the troops or maybe they are hired workers to help reconstruct Iraq. But Blackwater is a little bit different.

This Blackwater company is owned by an ex-Bush Admin intern named Erik Prince, and his company owns some lucrative contracts to provide security in Iraq. Don't make me explain it, Jack Cafferty and Jeremy Scahill to your left will provide you with some background information. One of the things I wondered was "how much do these guys make?", well according to the Washington Post (2004) these armed commandos earn about $1,000 each day they are in Iraq. If your interested in researching this interesting topic there is a plethora of links available on Wikipedia.
So all that is interesting, if your looking for more video about Blackwater, Robert Greenwald covered them in his documentary "Iraq for Sale" you can watch a clip here.

You might still be asking yourself, "Whats the problem?" That is exactly what Jon Stewart asks Scahill in this interview conducted in April.

Stephen Colbert Interviews Howard Dean

Last Night Stephen Colbert Interviewed Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Howard Dean. They discussed the recently held Republican debate, where the crowd infamously applauded torture.

Clap If You Love Torture - Huffington Post
They clapped for torture. I'm not saying that Tuesday's GOP debate was the Coliseum, with the crowd rising to its feet in a lusty rage. But when given the choice between Giuliani's support of "enhanced interrogation techniques" and McCain's clearly reasoned, fully experienced belief that torture is not as useful as armchair-generals think, they clapped for Giuliani.

Here is the debate segment on torture in question.
