God Smites Georgia

Just outside the Georgia capitol building, Governor Sonny Perdue led his state in an official prayer for rain this week. As most people know by now, Georgia is suffering from a potentially catastrophic drought, and Perdue decided to seek divine intervention. Appealing to a higher power for rain is an age-old human tradition, one perhaps best illustrated in the form of the Native American rain dance. So, the Republican Governor led a gathering of lawmakers, ministers and ordinary citizens in a direct and specific request to God. "Oh father, we acknowledge our wastefulness," Perdue said. "But we're doing better. And I thought it was time to acknowledge that to the creator, the provider of water and land, and to tell him that we will do better."Nay sayers attacked the proceedings on several points:
"The governor is exceeding his constitutional authority," said Ed Buckner, an atheist and treasurer of the group [The Atlanta Freethought Society]. "He has no right to set up prayer services on behalf of the people of Georgia, particularly not on the grounds of the state Capitol."At the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's blog, one reader took issue with the Governor's actions from a theological perspective:
"God is not an ATM machine you can go to and get whatever you need whenever you ask for it."So did the prayer work? While there were trace amounts of rain the following day, the science-based forecast for the rest of the week puts the chance of further precipitation at 10% or less. As attorney Gil Rogers sees it, whether or not a few drops fall from the sky this week or the next is beside the point:
"We shouldn't look at it as 'Once the rains come we'll be fine,'" he said. "We'd like to see rain, but this doesn't get us any closer to sustaining water management in Georgia."Lastly, the people over at the site Why Won't God Heal Amputees? have posted a video with their take on the efficacy on prayer. I'm guessing Sonny Perdue hasn't seen it.

Since God is not a milk jug, then you have no rational reason to compare. God is a spirit. You worship him in spirit and in truth. A reasonable logical person is highly read. These people are afraid of reading the most import instructional book on the planet, the Bible.
God is not Houdini. God is your creator. He was merciful enough to place you on a planet and give you food, water, clothing, and a sun to keep you warm. When you pray to God, then you must wait for an answer. You must pray in his will. He has a will for your life. If you do not accept him or his son, then you have no right to expect anything from him. If you are in doubt about God, ask him to reveal himself to you. Open up your heart in earnest and you will find the answer. God wants what's best for his people. Even when the governor prayed for rain and the rain came people hardened their hearts and did not believe. I pray for mercy for your soul. And I pray that God will reveal himself to you. When God answers this prayer, I want you to share. God is good. His mercy endured forever. Praise God.

As usual, everyone is free to express themselves except Christians. He did not do this in the name of the people of Georgia. He did not force anyone to pray, nor coerce anyone to listen.. He has a right to pray anywhere, any time, just as anyone else, no matter what office he holds...freedom is not just for nonbelievers... if just hearing someone pray offends you, you have become the oppressor, you have become the discriminator, you have become unyielding where you expect others to yield.

Uh.... Mary. One quick question.... how do we know your god is the right god? I mean, what if the maniacal muslims are right? What about the Jews? Native Americans who believe in "the great mystery" (which I find to be the least offensive/presumptuous...basically they acknowledge that there's something out there but they don't profess to know exactly what it is). So, if god is a christian god, why 911? Was god pissed at the world trade center? Was it an economic greed thing? But what about the kids who died? Think about it....

YOU Boob not tube is more like it. Here is my prayer, and its not an illison. I pray to God the father of our Lord Jesus Christ that this bastard of a person that wrote this has an accident that takes away one of his limbs. Then suffer untill he's asked God for help. My god is not going to give him 3 choices but one, Screw you. To recieve anything from God, you must know 3 things. What is available, how to recieve it, and what to do with it after you Got it. And to trust that God will answer your prayer. Prayer takes believing, and I believe that the jerk at u-boob will get his just rewards. He will laugh, but for only so long. As Christains we have been taught to turn the other cheek, not this time. No one puts down my Loving Father without a fight from me. My prayer, Thus said the Lord God. Amen

Iorran and Mary, I couldn't have said it better myself. Personally, I am horrified by the statements in that video, but we do live in America and free speech is one of the blessings of being an American. And Big Doug, I think it is simply the free will of man that caused 9/11 and many other tragedies of this world. The same free will of man that allows us to choose to believe or not to believe, to follow or not to follow God.

Just because YOU have not EXPERIENCED HIM (JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD), and by the way your analogy proves your ignorance of GOD. Besides you don't go to Christianity.com to find the truth. YOU GO TO THE BIBLE. YOU KNOW B-I-B-L-E (BASIC-INSTRUCTIONS-BEFORE- LEAVING-EARTH). I am a living witness of the power of prayer for a have been healed from blindness in a praise service at the church. IT WILL BE GOOD FOR YOU TO FIND HIM WHILE YOU CAN AND REPENT!!!

When a football player scores a touchdown he lifts his head to thank God and, of course, his team should win the game because they all held hands and prayed for the win. What do you think the other team did? Prayed for a lose? When a child gets over the flu the mother thanks God, but the woman down the street just lost her baby to SIDS. Was she not worthy of God's help? Religion is a business and is only interested in $$$$.

Let me throw this out for dissection.
In addition to other things, Religion offers its believers hope. We should not mess with people's access to hope.

This is a straw man argument. Christianity.com...or anyother .com does not set the standard for anything. You can not take these three conditions....now later and wait and use them....because that is not the only options of pray and its efficacy. What are they...not worth the time explaining...you just set up a straw man argument and therefore your reasoning is erroneous.

BULL SHIT.
now that is a truth - even a scientific truth!
this is what Castro's cronies taught the poor Cubans when he got into power.
why do we think we little humans need to have all the answers? wow. it is just so simple, isn't it - a milk jug! all of the world's problems and issues should be so easy to resolve.....
her's another amazing thought regarding this guy's "optical illusion" .... if this is such a great revelation, then why does he use the very same principles from modern Christianity? yes, he is trying to degrade them, but we can make a parody of anything we believe in or anything in our world.....
woe to whoever thinks there is any value in this very sad joke.

GOOD GOD! How about they bring in some of the indians they kicked out of Georgia years ago to pray for rain, then again if God has smitten Georgia, he has also smitten California, and a lot of other states. And if he has smitten them, guess why it is? It's because these so-called Christians are all a bunch of hypocrites who have forgoten the question of why Jesus is the answer, and our leaders have abandoned God by lying, being corrupt, giving contracts to their friends, representing special interest groups instead of the people, and also for now allowing one man, one vote democracy. If we had one man one vote which is democracy, we wouldn't have the GOP running the country.

Now we are sitting here talking about Christianity, hmmmm so then I guess that because the Muslims in Iraq didn't believe in Allah enough means that we went in there and they are in worse shape than before. So does that mean that if the Muslims in Iraq all start believing they will win, we will leave and come back to America? What about Israel? If the Jews all become relgious (and give back all of the weapons we have sold to them) then they will win against the Palistians and their Arab neighbors? Same with the Tibetan Buddhists vs. China? It goes on and on and on. God created man, then man created religion!

Terrible things happen to this world because when Adam sinned in the garden of Eden he gave up the sovereignty to satan. Sin and satan are responsible for the bad things that happen. God remains in power, not letting satan take complete control until the day Christ returns. We could not impossibly see the intricate plan of God, our prayers would nor could never compromise his will.

Tough topic. Our beliefs are so different and closely held that it seems unwise to casually throw them out there for others to ridicule or to maybe unintentionally hurt someone else. So, I'll be as vague as possible. I do believe in God, although, I am not a religious person.
My experience with prayer has usually been out of desperation and it has been my experience that God is not Santa Clause granting my personal "wish list".
I believe everything happens for a reason and there are no accidents. I may not see it for a very long time, but usually things I do not understand today make sense one day...sometimes very far off in the future.
I think Governor Sonny Perdue meant well and whether he had the right to do this where he did seems kind of petty. If it brought comfort to even one person for one second, it was worthwhile. Sorry, I am not able to go out on a limb any further with this...it is just too personal.
Sincerely and respectfully,
Mr. Clark
