Americans: Campaign Coverage 'Untrustworthy'
After reading the report, and some of the other survey results, I have come to the conclusion that the American People are at once right, and not being honest with themselves. Let's dig into this a bit more after this related report from The Onion.
Poll: Mitt Romney Is Candidate Most Voters Want To Get Into Bar Fight WithIronically, the article about the study kind of proves the study's point. The piece highlights some "sexy" stats from a much longer report, and eschews the context that gives the report it's substance.
First of all, let's take a look at some of the numbers that reflect Americans' dissatisfaction.
- 64% of Americans say they do not trust the news media's campaign coverage.
- 88% somewhat or strongly agree that the news media focuses too much on trivial rather than important issues.
- 84% believe the news media has too much influence on voters' decisions.
How about the #2 clip this month? Some wonky dissertation on reducing dependence on foreign oil? Nah, it's Chuck (Norris) and Huck!
Americans also said they least wanted to see coverage of negative political ads and "Gotcha!" moments. Which is , I suppose, why the most popular piece on ThePolitical Machine is my pal, David Knowles', piece on...Republican Tom Tancredo's scare ad. Of course, I, personally, avoid this type of coverage at all times.
Now, I could bore you with a nuanced analysis of how it's not really the public's fault, and how FCC regulations have changed and affected the types of coverage you get, but that's just what you want, isn't it? Isn't it? Substance junkies!
The truth is, as usual, somewhere in the middle. Most people naturally gravitate toward that which entertains, but also would like to be well-informed. When asked, nobody's going to say, "Well, actually, I prefer crap!" Problem is, while it's possible to be entertaining and funny while making a substantial point (The Onion video is a great example), it's also really hard to do. Since "boring" is a much bigger deal-breaker than "fluff", the media cranks out the marshmallows. This phenomenon is aggravated by the fact that news divisions are expected to make a profit instead of just providing a public service.
The rest of the study is studded with gems like this: while 77% of Americans feel there is a crisis of leadership in America, and we already know they think campaign coverage is crap, 76% of Americans believe the next president will be a good leader.
Also, in a landslide, 66% of Republican women said that they did not believe America would be better off with more women in leadership positions.
I encourage you to read the whole report. To me, it paints a picture of an electorate that has trouble reconciling what it hopes with what it knows. Plus, we've learned that the report is having an affair with this article.

Of course………. the news in unreliable. Very few journalist restrain themselves from planting their own ideals in with the facts. Even though anyone with the IQ of tree bark realizes this, we are just so afraid of missing something that we tune in and soak it in. A lot of people are just to lazy to take the information and fact check it. Then the id part of our personality simply watches to validate our opinions as our ego watches to get a boost from successful argument. It is the most basic of needs- acceptance…...that keeps us watching.
Again , people can say they want candidates to play nice but actions speak louder than words. Millions tune in to see the mud slung at these debates but how many tune in to a quiet sit down on the realm of global politics on C-Span? What people should really be forthright enough to admit is that they don’t want to watch mud slung at THEIR candidate but otherwise it is interesting and newsworthy.

Not only can the American electorate not trust mainstream media coverage of the presidential election we also can not trust your story on this subject. This is made obvious by the fact that you totally avoid any mention of the most shameful and dishonest factor present in the untrustworthy coverage of the campaign. That factor is mainstream media's determination to avoid almost any mention of the amazing philosophy and campaign of Dr. Ron Paul.
Sincerely,
Don Reid

The recent CNN Youtube Republican "debate" is a good example of the shameful slanting of the news. I watched the Democrat youtube "event" and the unfairness and bias in how CNN handled themselves when it came to selection of questions (and questioners) for the Republican candidates, was apparent.
How about a Demo/Repub "debate" taking place simultaneous at two different venues with all candidates receiving the same questions, for later broadcast and without editing?
It may be trashed by the Liberals, but I think I'll get my news from Fox in the future.

If President Eisenhower were still around he would probably change his famous quote to "Beware the Politico-Media Complex!"

These are a few of the recent Ron Paul stories here. The media is not avoiding coverage of Paul. They are simply tailoring their coverage based on what viewers want (that was one of the points Tommy made). They do that with any topic, not just politics. Nat. and state polls show Ron Paul is not a top tier candidate. He is not going to get top tier coverage---just like UFO guy, Hunter, etc don’t get minute by minute coverage.
Your view is exactly the point of my statement above. You want coverage but only if it authenticates your views. Example: you want the news to mention Ron Pauls(your adjective) “amazing” philosophy. You must not care if that is fact or fiction as long as it confirms your view. You must not consider the coverage that contradicts your views to be coverage.

Don Reid,
It's my policy never to get pissed off at one of my readers, and I'm not going to start now. I assume your comment is mainly intended to publicize your candidate, and that insulting my integrity was collateral and not your intention. Just in case, though, I'd like you to note that there's no coverage of any specific candidate in my piece, so your charge of anti-Paul bias is obviously false.
I'm actually inclined to like your candidate, since his stance as an anti-war Republican has shone welcome attention on the disaster that is Iraq.
As my friend, RomneyGirl pointed out, we at the Political Machine have covered Paul extensively.
The strategy of Paul supporters to inundate forums with pro-Paul comments is smart, raising awareness of your candidate. The comments sometimes seem a little robotic and shoehorned, though, and may not end up serving you/them so well. Just an observation, one that RomneyGirl has made elsewhere.

Interesting that the politicians who lead in Iowa are the NICE guys--Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama. Guess we viewers use the debates to find out who isn't a self-centered egotist so we know who to vote for.
Jaki Baez9:28PMDec 1st 2007
Lettjane, who told you that Huckabee and Barack Obama are nice guys? Huckabee is a wolf with sheep clothing. He will never win the nomination and if the republicans are stupid enough to put him against Edwards and Obama, they will lose the election. Period!
There are jews, catholics, muslims and hindus in this country, who wants another praying president. Religion got us here in this disaster. I am a christian and I pray like the bible states- one and one with my GOD. You don't need this issue thrown into everybody's face and this will be what Huckabee brings to the republicans. Heck, I hope he wins- we will sure get a democratic in the white house for sure. As for Obama, our black savior, I doubt he will ever win against romney or the major from new york. They will tear him alive! All his little secrets will come to light! So, as for our lady Hillary, she is losing according to the fake media's records, but, we all know that she is ahead in most polls, it is so hard for "the boys club" to accept a woman and it is so hard for the republicans to win against her on the ticket. The liberals boo her because she won't give them licenses or homosexual marriages,. so they go to Obama to get their wishes fulfilled, and from the looks it is working with the media's help!!!

I'm guessing your an older, retired doc. The onion is a humor magazine. They specialize in parody in a newspaper(or on on line newspaper)format, whereas the Enquirer purports to report real news.
I figure this is a generational thing, I'm starting to miss the occasional cultural reference myself these days. So say goodnight,Gracie! Now there's a cultural reference you won't miss!

Ron Paul for President !!
--------------------------
Now that is what I call a real informative post. I think I will change my mind and vote for Ron Paul!!

So let's get this straight, Roy...Republicans should have ONLY been asked questions from other Republicans in the YouTube debate the other night? In other words, preaching from the choir?
Last time I checked, we live in a democracy...aren't potential presidential candidates supposed to answer questions from everyone? Not one questions asked was a rant and a rave...all were asked calmly and appropriately.
Livin' Large9:28AMDec 2nd 2007
Chris Rock said this with a smile and a grin in reference to almost voting for that "white lady" Hilary Clinton. Picture this a few years ago, Carrol O'Conner refering to Jesse Jackson as that "Black man" he almost voted for, with that grin on his face.

(Senator Barack Obama pledges to end Don't Ask Don't Tell - and to help reinstate gays and lesbians kicked out of the military due to this policy
November 29, 2007.) This remark and promise he made will cause the democratic party if Obama is elected to run for the democratics. I am a democratic and I find this remark disturbing. But, yet the liberal media does not want to spin it. They want to see straight man feeling uncomfortable changing with a known homosexual. Does that mean that the army must make different living arrangements? Does that mean that the army has to assign different pissing toilets? Heteorsexuals have the majority rights here, not gays. The don't ask and don't tell by the Clintons was the best thing for the american army. Think about this, what would happen if a homophopia army man thought a gay man was hitting on him? There might be very much violence with this new promise of Obama. This shows that he is being leaded by interest groups and not "well sounded logic". The media refuses to to acknowledge this blunder because most of the liberal media are "gay".

I read this crap and what did you say? America can't trust Campaign Coverage because the Media gets paid for their coverage. The debates are the vetting process by the public. If the process is tainted then so is the product. If CNN controls who gets into the debate it's not a Democratic process. If CNN controls the questions asked, then they choose what's important. They control the truth. That's what's wrong with our politics. They don't tell the truth and we are abused. How many times does an abusive husband need to slap his wife to make her shut up? How many 9-11's do we need to make Bush and Clinton Kings?
