'08 Shocker: John McCain Is Still Alive
Dec 21st 2007 11:45AM
Filed Under:eSenate, Republicans, John McCain, Ron Paul, 2008 President, Scandal, Media, Ken Layne's Outrage
Something strange happened during this week before Christmas: Political experts suddenly noticed that John McCain was still running for president, apparently as a Republican.Weirder still, the excitable senior citizen now has a fighting chance in New Hampshire, where he won the GOP primary way back in
But a terrible scandal -- perhaps even worse than the "gay sweater" scandal of last summer -- threatens to derail McCain's latest effort to seem promising in New Hampshire before ultimately losing the nomination again.
Few people remember it today, but John "Walnuts" McCain was kind of a big deal eight years ago.
Sure, it had already been decided back in 1999 that young George W. Bush Jr. would be the Republican nominee. The young Bush had an advantage: Voters thought his name sounded vaguely familiar, and sometimes that's just "the edge" a candidate needs .
But John McCain had rented one of those bus/RV things, and he would sit on that bus and talk, while the bus drove straight. Thus was born the "Straight Talk Bus." This strategy was a hit with reporters who cover the primary elections, so McCain got so much media coverage that a lot of people in New Hampshire thought he was already the president. So they voted for him.
McCain's 2000 campaign was also the first to successfully raise a lot of money online for a presidential race. His failure to get the nomination inspired other Internet fund-raising heroes such as Howard Dean, who also lost the nomination, and Ron Paul, who is already the invincible president of Freedom.
John McCain has been a member of the House or Senate for nearly three decades, and is part of one of America's most powerful military dynasties. Politically, he is best known for eventually coming around to strongly disagree with anything he ever believed. In other words, he's a "maverick."
While conservative voters have never liked him, they also don't like the other bunch of old crooks, slick weirdos, grumbly actors and 9/11 pornographers running for the nomination. McCain is back!
Or is he? The Drudge Report and all kinds of political blogs are covering a new explosive scandal that maybe involves somebody in Congress (McCain) doing some kind of favor for a contributor or lobbyist or something. Think about it.
If word gets out, the voting public may not only decide not to pass on McCain -- they may lose trust in our entire political graft process! And that's why (according to Drudge) the New York Times has bravely chosen to kill the story.
I asked Matt Welch, author of "McCain: The Myth of a Maverick," to explain the significance, and also to sort of put the relevant details in a quote I could use, because I've been doing Christmas traveling for about 60 hours, with young children, and really don't feel like reading a lot of Drudge Report allegations about some lobbying crap. Here's what Welch said:
"The fact that McCain has intervened personally for regulatory relief on behalf of campaign contributors is 'news' in roughly the same way that the Olympic Games are 'news' -- it's something the world pays attention to once every four or eight years, and then promptly forgets."
I demanded some kind of example, for journalistic integrity:
Too bad, indeed.

Thought this was a rather biased hit piece. Funny how those who strongly dislike McCain are grabbing at straws to attack him now that his message is catching on, and he's rising in all of the polls. Keep trying, Kenny boy.

I don't think McCain's collapsing campaign has anything to do with campaign money or gay sweaters. It has to do with the fact that McCain is a shell of the man he used to be.
I do remember well his run for the presidency in 2000. He had fire and passion and - even though he had been around awhile by then - most folks did not know him well. Many liked his ability to buck his own party when he saw they were acting like idiots.
But, alas, the GOP sunk its fortunes in Bush Jr. and - well, we know the rest.
It is 7 years later, and McCain is 71 years old. I just think his best political days are behind him. He is no longer the maverick politican he was and to me seems like another tired old Washington Senator.

McCain is still the best person for the job hands down.

It's so sad that people like you actually think your biased, arrogant, un-thoughtful dribble is something to crow about. You're not smart, clever or witty. I try to stay informed on all sides and have never posted on anything before. I'm just so sick of all of the kool-aid drinkers and ditto heads who can't or just won't think for themselves and worse yet...demand that everyone else turn over their brain as well. Fortunately, I was taught to think for myself and always be wary of those who wish to tell me things of little or no substance but of only sensationalism - even if fabricated. How much do they pay you to do it?

McCain shot himself in the butt when he backed amnesty for illegal entrants to this country. I refuse to vote for anyone who supported amnesty for illegals

McCain is the only Republican that can beat Hillary, that's hands down the tough situation that republicans find themselves in. Would a more evangelical candidate be nice, sure. Would a more fiscal conservative be nice, sure. Would it be nice to build a 100 foot high wall and keep out all those icky Mexicans ... only if you're a racist ... but fine.
But, these people, the ones spouting hate or severe right wing ideas can't beat Hillary. John McCain is an American hero and you may not agree with him on everything, but you know what he stands for ... Honor.

Ken Layne, you're a horrible bastard whose insensate cruelty is already legend amongst the humble denizens of Southern Croatia, and I'm glad that your poisoned pen is now foisted upon unsuspecting AOL'ers to view and weakly mock. You may have thought you were safe after the dot conning of Ukraine, but you can't hide from teh internets forever, Ken!
The Facts:
John McCain can can swoop down and kill an eagle in mid-flight. He can also run faster than a cheetah. He can also inflict horrible death and carnage on the decks of aircraft carriers. How many of these pretenders to the Republican throne can claim the same? Fred Thompson may have declaimed the end of civilization as he hunched over an aircraft carrier's rail in The Hunt for Red October, but McCain brought the pain.
John McCain is the bedrock of our nation's honor and integrity. If he were not alive, we would've descended jungle justice shortly after Barry Goldwater's ill-fated presidential campaign. It is only John McCain, the vessel for all that is Good and Right in our fair country, who keeps the forces of darkness at bay. If he is somehow prevented from obtaining the Presidency, then I promise that the unthinkable will happen: someone else will be elected instead.
John McCain has single-handedly protected us from the Canadian horde. From his brilliant campaign in the Dakota back-country to his celebrated winter massacre of the Saskatchewan Alliance at Broken Bow, John McCain has definitively halted further Canadian incursions into our sacrosanct lands and steadfastly maintained an inviolate northern border.
For these reasons alone (though there are countless tales of his swift cunning and titanic courage to fill a library), John McCain should become President of these United States. Not since James K. Polk has a man worthy of the White House emerged to guide our nation into a boundless and limitless future of unlimited prosperity and continued American domination of a petty and barbaric world.

John McCain is a man. He comes from a long line of naval men who showed courage in most of our wars. When John was shot down over Hanoi, the NVA knew what they had. To gain publicity, they offered to release him .He knew that this act would dishonor his father and demoralize the other American prisoners. Thus, he declined and stay through five more years oftorture and pain.
What other politicians would have done this? You need not vote for him. But, do not question his character.

McCain is my choice... Honorable, tested, grounded in reality and capable of leading our country.
I like Huckabee, but I don't know enough about him... The other evangelical, from Utah, seems like a fine man, but I'm not a theo-crat... Just because he's respectable and clean, doesn't mean that he'd be a good President. Also, God uses people, not the other way around.
Hillary is a nightmare... I like the young fellow, but he's just not ready for the Presidency; I do admire him for having the courage to admit his drug use, though... Dennis Kucinich is a FOAF, whom has helped a very, very dear friend of mine, from Ohio. He's a good man... Still, I'd like to see Dennis K. in the congress. He'd be an interesting congressional leader, much more so, than say, a Dick Gephardt was...
McCain is my choice.

McCain is the only candidate that has a chance of bringing back the integrity to the white house and to all of the people. This man has given more to this country, than most of us would give to our own families. As for illegals, if you send all 15 million or so, do it, and the economy of this great country would collapse.

John McCain is the most honest man in politics.
Hillary is the most dishonest!!

John McCain and Joe Lieberman are both full time Stooges for the Powerful Israeli lobby. Both want US Troops to stay in the Middle east to protect Israel's interests.
McCain is also weak on protecting Our USA Borders. His Border State (AZ.) is a "running toilet" of illegal aliens.
In My view, McCain would be another disaster in the Whitehouse.

Heaven protect us from more Clinton. Give me the man who fought and suffered for this nation.

John McCain is a true hero. Read his past accomplishments and realize this!!! What other candidate gave 30 plus years to his country? He does not advocate anmesty. He will not, however, go after an illegal grandmother "whose grandson is serving in our military." He has sound judgement, character, plus another quality most candidates don't have--a heart. There IS NO OTHER candidate qualified as McCain is. As far as age goes, 71 isn't that old. It's a state of mind. And, he "takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'" His mom is in her 90's and she's sharper than YOU are!!!
Janet4:59PMDec 24th 2007
I have met McCain personally. He DOES NOT believe in amnesty!!! He just won't "go after illegal granma when her grandson is fighting for our country". He is level headed and fair. But he will NOT allow anyone to take advantage of our country, including illegals!!! McCain is the ONLY qualified candidate to become next president of the United States. God bless him and God bless America!!!
Janet5:03PMDec 24th 2007
One more thing: He's a VETERAN!! We all know his terrible experiences during his 5 year captivity. How many other people you know or think you know can endure what he has?
And, without our veterans, we would not have the freedon of speech that you so desire to abuse.

I am a registered Democrat supporting John Edwards. However, I also think Senator McCain has a lot of personal integrity. If the race was between McCain and any other Democrat besides, Edwards, I would vote for McCain.
This "new revelation" has all the stink associated with the smear they dumped on him the last time in South Carolina. I hope that he can prove the empty allegations false, sue the hell out of those behind it.
Shame on you for dropping this charge absent any hard fact.
