Breakfast With Ron Paul
The Free State Project folks shipped me up to Nashua, NH, last weekend to speak at their annual Liberty Forum.
Friday night I was drinking with a couple of the guys when one of them said a friend was having Ron Paul over for a breakfast meeting the next morning and did I want to go. The closest I've ever been to a presidential candidate was my old Georgetown classmate Bill Clinton - we shared the same dorm floor for a year or two - and he'd been running only for class president in those days. Here was a chance to get up close and personal with a guy in the heat of the Big One.The modest, two-story house sits on a snowy hill in Limeboro. After trudging up a steep set of not-so-well-shoveled steps, we're welcomed by the owner and offered coffee and homemade muffins and scones. Ron Paul arrives a few minutes later with his wife Carol, his granddaughter, and a couple of aides.
He's anything but physically imposing, and he lacks Bill's room-commanding presence. He looks tired but not fragged. His dark suit is wrinkled and his nose is running a little from the cold outside. As he stands near the center of the room, the dozen or so of us present begin asking him questions and he responds in a measured tone with minimal gesticulation. It doesn't take long to realize that all his opinions – whether on foreign policy or monetary policy or education topics - are linked, all part of a cohesive, philosophical whole that keeps harking back to the "blueprint," the Constitution.
And as the coffee klatch rolls on, I realize that this man hasn't a chance. He speaks to the mind rather than the heart. He promises sweeping reforms in almost every aspect of the government, and though that may resonate with the folks in this room, it's not enough. His opponents are promising, to varying degrees, a cradle-to-grave nanny state with a chicken in every pot. He's speaking to the adult in us, they're speaking to the child. Any doubt as to whose message will resonate farther and wider?
Looking at the New Hampshire primary totals, it appears the Live-Free-or-Die folks have chosen the latter.

When you trade your freedoms for security you are rewarded with neither.

As a Ron Paul supporter, I can tell you, there is even more at stake here than the presidency. Paul is educating the American public, often with a message they are afraid to hear. Dr. Paul has often been a lone voice in Congress in trying to protect our Constitutional rights. He also shines a light on our corrupt fiat monetary system and horrendous national debt. It's not just about the election, it's about the truth. We don't care if he falls to 1% in the polls. Paul's supporters will continue to help him get his message out until his platform is adopted. This is something the Republican party and the media fails to understand. And that's why Ron Paul will be in the race until the end. Why not join us?

This is why you are my favorite author, Dr. Wilson - your insight is remarkable. I hope you are wrong about Ron Paul's chances, but I fear you will be proven correct.

This is not an astounding insight. Of course the widest support comes from appealing to the lowest common denominator but does that mean we should just throw our hands in the air and let America continue it's slide into an Idiocracy? No, it takes a concerted effort from everyone to help educate those around them and not just settle for the lesser of two evils. To me, this insight amounts to "well people are stupid so there's no hope for America". It's a defeatist attitude.

It is sad that Paul will not be President, but he has educated many or at least caused a few people to ask questions or think for themselves. I used to be an Iraq war supporter until I hear Paul talk about the 9/11 Commission Report. At that point, I decided to read it for myself and side with him. I am still amazed at how many people support the war when the report says there was no compelling evidence to say Iraq had anything to do with Al Qaeda. It just astonishes me.
It's rare a man of real value gets high into government. Unless people take a stand, nothing will change. People wonder why Paul's supporters continue to contribute to his campaign while frontrunner run out of money and the answer is they believe in him and want to endorse his concepts, regardless of if he wins.

The defeatist attitude only leads to instant defeat. Ron Paul says it best himself:
It has become a joke, a staple of late-night one-liners and water-cooler conversations.
Everyone knows that the federal government is an inefficient nightmare. But does anyone really care?
We have been conditioned since childhood that while the federal government is a bureaucratic disaster, there’s nothing we can do about it. It will always be this way. “Politicians are corrupt,” we tell each other. This will never change.
The Founders were told the same thing. The mightiest nation in the world was constantly breathing down their necks and infringing on their liberties while telling them that they could do nothing to change their situations. Yet, they rose up as one and defended the rights they had long been denied.
We currently find ourselves under a much heavier burden than the Founders could have ever imagined. On top of all the violations, our income is ripped from our paychecks to partly finance the debt D.C. accumulates with their lavish spending. We not only have to tolerate big government, we have to fund it, and mortgage our children’s futures to keep funding it.
The truth is that we know this is not the way it is supposed to be. This is not the government our ancestors died to give us.
Whether it is acknowledged or not, deep down inside the American people walk around everyday aware that the federal government is driving the country into the ground.
Then jokes are made about it and life continues on.
The Founders? They put their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor on the line to end big government.
Over 200 years ago, a like-minded group of people joined together to stop the erosion of their rights, their livelihoods, and their heritage. Now, thousands upon thousands of individuals from every walk of life have joined forces to accomplish what supposedly shouldn’t be attempted in our society.
If America is to survive, something has to be done. And there’s no reason why we can’t be the ones to do it.
Never before have our liberties been so threatened by our own government, but we have a powerful message on our side - a message of truth, freedom, peace, and prosperity.
Two primaries are down. Just two. We have an entire nation to win back, and a long way to go.
Now is the time to take back the America our Founders gave us. Now is the time to stand.

I think it's sad that Ron Paul will not get a chance at being President- but his function will be at the least: getting the people of this country talking about the issues he raises. Constitutional realities, the true role of government in our lives, and the fact that nobody owns him- therefore no indebtedness to special interests. As it is with many of the candidates--they force the major players to address key issues thay'd rather not address.
Paul Stanko6:50PMJan 11th 2008
Win or lose, if Ron Paul is on my state's primary ballot, he's got my vote. He's the only candidate in my lifetime with whom I agree on every single issue.
MarkD7:10PMJan 11th 2008
If he speaks to the adult in us and his message resonates with the young, then you may be a bit surprised with the outcome.
James7:20PMJan 11th 2008
I love Ron Paul but I cannot vote for him. He is a bit too idealistic to be realistic. Our constitution was written before television or even telephones. It is a good guide but in no way refelcts the current worldwide issues. You can say it isn't our probelem, and it wasn't. Now it is. The worldwide scale widely affects us here at home and that is just a fact. We have to finish in Iraq even though we mostly know we should never have been there in the first place. The middle east is very much our interest until we no longer need oil. The way things are may not be nice, but they are the way things are. You can choose to pretend the facts aren't the facts or you can see thr truth that's before your eyes. I think it would be a very bad move to remove this man from our side, but I also think his one sided thinking would be very bad as the leader of our country. I am neither Democrat nor Republicanm I am an American. As such I am a realist and cannot put aside the cold, hard truth.

We own the world, and Ron Paul doesn't see it that way. I want cheap coffee from Guatemalan Foldger's slaves. I want cheap credit so I can feel like I can afford to max out my Visa and buy a giant house. And absolutely a must for me, I want to export a cheap currency so that all our jobs and production capacity can go to the lowest bidder slave nation.
I can't forget this: I want huge gigantic foreign aid and loans to go to third world countries so they can afford to hire Haliburton.

I'm a registered independent in NJ. I'll vote for Ron Paul if he's on the primary ballot. (I've never voted in a primary before.) I've fought and hoped too hard and too long with too little success to imagine I'll have any impact, but I'll push that lever anywhere.
And when November rolls around, and Ron Paul's not on the ballot, maybe I'll write in Cthulhu. As his supporters say, "Why choose the lesser evil?"
Sarina11:21PMJan 11th 2008
Ditto kcisarik, ditto Defend the Constitution. What Dr. Wilson does not understand is that while Dr. Paul speaks to our minds he captures our hearts and thus we become engaged in the struggle to save this great nation. It is your vote, make it count, sometimes we have to sacrifice for the greater good.

Reminds me of a couple Samuel Adams quotes;
“Mankind are governed more by their feelings than by reason.”
& of course;
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!”
New Hampshire has proven to be nothing more then a very cold state, and an empty slogan on a license plate. You've got a lot of work to do FSP.

I've noticed that many American's think that the Constitution is outdated. I didn't realize the level of fear thats crept into the conciousness. For those of us in other countries, it seems a shame to see so many of you turning your backs on a document that changed the world. After 9/11, so many flags were flying. What did that represent? I mistakenly thought that it was defiance to those that would try to instill fear in you. A reaffirmation of everything that made America great. Was I wrong? Or, did the flags represent State, not the constitution or the resilience of the people. Is the Flag waving about Stateism? If so,Empire comes before the people. If freedom is a quaint oldfashioned notion, easily displaced by the state for your own good and safty, you guys have a lot of nerve calling yourselves the leaders of the free world. I'm glad Ron Paul is running for President. A collective wake up call is in order. Are you Americans because you live on a certain geography on the earth. Or,is there something more intrinsic? I always thought that the constitution and the bill of rights were the heart and soul of what it meant to be American. Am I so very, very wrong? I hope not. After watching the debates on you tube, all the giggling and smirking, the dehumanizing of middle eastern people as nothing more than terrorists, I'm disheartened. I'm wondering if America is not just passing it's zenith, I'm wondering if it's becoming as scary as the former USSR was.

James7:20PMJan 11th 2008 is the true definition of what is exactly wrong with America. The Constitution does not have an expiry date, only weak minded leftist and communists do.

$9.2 trillion is our national debt we are spending $1.48 billion per day. We have no money to spend, we must stop spending. Is it difficult to understand that our GREAT NATION will topple if we don't stop spending in major ways?? Save America Please, it is your duty as an American to live your political affiliations and vote for RON PAUL.

Thanks for the insight, Mr. Wilson. Some people value security over freedom, and they will probably ruin us all. Thanks for what you do!
