Fred Barnes: Romney for VP?
Mar 11th 2008 2:21PM
Filed Under:eRepublicans, John McCain, Mitt Romney, 2008 President, Veepstakes
Fred Barnes analyzes the choices today in the Weekly Standard, checking them off one by one. Lieberman, he notes, has a certain attraction, and the possibility to hardening support at the center. But that would likely come at the price of further turning off the Right, since Lieberman for all of his charm and foreign policy hawkishness is a full-blooded liberal domestically.
There are several governors who are on the list, but each one of them is very young, untested and has not been vetted in the fire of a national campaign.
Finally, Barnes turns to Romney, who he believes brings a number of advantages. He has stature and experience, and has been through the fire of a national campaign, so he won't bring any surprises. Barnes continues,
I find this last point very odd. It's a tribute to the inanity of the average American that you could take a corporate turnaround master and turn that into a liability in an economic crisis. Anyone with any sense knows that fixing something often involves breaking something. You don't turn around a company or an industry or a national economy without forcing adjustments, i.e., causing pain and eliminating some jobs in order to create others. If Romney's skill in this regard is actually seen as a liability by the Democrats, that alone is reason not to trust them with the economy. But don't expect the nitwits at the ballot box to realize this. And if it works, they'll use it.Romney has allies in the Bush wing of the Republican party. President Bush favors him as McCain's veep. Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor, preferred Romney over McCain in the primaries, but never endorsed him publicly. Karl Rove, the president's political strategist, has hinted that he considers Romney to be McCain's best running mate.
Is there a downside to Romney? Possibly. It's not his Mormonism. He lost the nomination to McCain, but religion wasn't the reason. As a corporate turnaround artist, he rescued companies, sometimes by laying off workers. When he ran for the Senate from Massachusetts in 1994, the incumbent, Teddy Kennedy, raised the layoff issue with punishing effect. No doubt Democrats would use it again, and it might have resonance if a recession hits and unemployment is increasing.
Barnes concludes by noting that McCain doesn't like Romney, and that in itself might be a huge hurdle. I think it will be. It's not just a question of liking: it's a question of being overshadowed. McCain obviously resented Romney's money, looks or smarts. And that kind of resentment is not likely to lead to comfort in sharing a ticket.
The conundrum, as Barnes points out, is that the list of battle-tested, Oval-office ready VP picks is mighty thin. And we'll learn a lot about McCain when he plays his hand.

I have to agree with David s John Mccain is great on national defence but we need someone with him that can be strong on the economy.I think with someone like a romney or huckabe on the ticket the party would be stronger .I think Mccain will win no matter what but the economy will be front and center in nov

Hello Here? Voters did NOT warm up to Romney. So now you wanna saddle Americans best hope with him? Uggh What has he done good for Mass? Saddled them with a horrific health insurance yoke.
Wish someone like U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana would be looked at. He will be the first Indian-American to head a U.S. state's government. He has two terms in Congress. Making him much more qualified than Obama. If any race deserves to be elected it is a Native American. He is a minority.
The Gov of Alaska Sarah Palin (R)she would have the gender covered.
Condi Rice would cover gender and race.
Bill Richardson Dem is very likable and not so very liberal.
So many better choices than Mitt Romney or Joe Lieberman. Uggh Uggh Uggh
Go Johnnie Go!

If McCain wants to win in November he better choose
Romney for his V.P. In the best marriages, each partner looks for someone, who best makes up for the
others' short points. McCain admits, himself, that he
isn't the most knowledgable person in economics. Romney has proven himself to be very capable in turning the Olympics around and improved the economic
situation in Mass. Also, his excellent education included majors in the economic field. McCain, hopefully, will put his ego aside and be happy to have
a V.P., who did very well during his campaigning, who could have voters speak of Romney presidential appearance, instead of McCain's age; who would make up for some of McCain's leanings to the left and realize that a McCain-Romney ticket would beat the hell out of a Hillary-Barack ticket.

The fundamental issue we all must address is “What is best for the country?” In my opinion, if McCain would be willing to put his Vice President to the highest and best use, Romney is the best man for the job.
There is a new book out — it is called America in Danger, published by Critical Issues Press (get it from Amazon or the publisher website). It was written by The Honorable Stephen M. Studdert, a former Senior Advisor to President Ronald Reagan, President George H. W. Bush (41), and President Gerald R. Ford. He was also appointed by the Clinton Adminstration to the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. He has been on the inside for a long time.
As Studdert himself explains, “America in Danger is a book of numbers, mostly negative ones, that tell the alarming story of foolish entitlement and wild spending that is destroying America.” He is saying on the record and in print what other insiders wouldn’t dare to say. Look at his article (The Real State of the Union) on Family Security Matters.
The point is simply this — even Romney’s detractors admit that Mitt Romney has a gift for numbers and finance. If McCain were to select Romney, and if the Republicans were able to muster a victory over the Democratic contenders, the wisest course of action would be to put Romney to work on our miserable financial condition. While it is rare that a VP is actually given a chance to do his best, from the standpoint of American needs and intelligent principles of governance, Romney fits the bill.
We are facing a NINE TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT and there’s more that is being swept under the figurative rug to the tune of five or more times that much.
If we don’t enlist people like Romney, a guy who has run companies, states and was able to unravel the Olympic fiasco, we deserve what we get. Who knows?
Maybe a good, old-fashioned Depression is what will bring this country together--it is exactly what we are going to get if we don't start paying attention to the way we're spending money that we don't have.

What about Condelisa Rice? That's the only hope of competing with the other ticket no matter which one gets that ticket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Republican Party cannot win the 2008 election unless a true conservative is nominated for Vice President.
Ron Paul is that true conservative.

There are some very hot, and unstrategic, anti-intellectual emotions in these posts.
There are some smart statements too.
Romney would be an excellent compliment to McCain. Like Obama, McCain's heart is in the right place, and like Obama, he's too weak on his own when it comes to the technical points and strategy (foreign affairs, the economy, systematic overhauls, etc). It's not enough to support a candidate that pulls your moral heartstrings, like Huckabee and Obama have done for so many. We need a POTUS that's smart enough to get the help he needs in his cabinet and support staff, to run OUR NATION right. Romney's record proves he's far more of a moderate than he presented himself to be during the race, to pander to the right (a necessary exercise for any Republican hopeful, unfortunately). He's a good man, and he's got the juice to seal the race for McCain, because so many people love from different sides love either man, for different reasons ("the vet and the business" is an easy, powerful spin that jumps to mind). Comment .48 and many others are right that Coulter can be inconsistent, but her approval is a sign that McCain needs a famous face, and that's his former rival. Such a move would also prove that McCain can focus on what's best for the Nation by putting petty rivalries aside, which is a solid move. McCain and Romney would be a dream team for many reasons. Any of you who care to discuss why, whether or not you agree with me, are invited to further discussion on U.S. best interest focuses, at youramericandollar.org We keep it respectful, pertinent, and intelligent at our house.

Whomever McCain chooses for Vice President, you can believe it better be someone younger. No offense to Lieberman, but seeing the two of them campaigning together is hardly awe inspiring.
I don't think Romney will work, because Romney is brilliant in many ways, and well, frankly, I don't think McCain is. You are correct - McCain has an ego and would not want to be overshadowed.
One choice for McCain would be former Congressman Rob Portman. Portman is a guy respected by both parties, he is significantly younger than McCain, is attractive, smart, and has held several jobs since leaving Congress. Also, he is from Ohio - a state McCain will desperately need if he hopes to win the White House. I live in Ohio and the election will turn here on the economy for the most part. McCain admits the economy is not his strength. I suggest he and his VP (whoever it is) make it their strength - fast.
