NRCC Money Scandal

Winning the Perfect Timing Award of 2008, the National Republican Congressional Committee has its own scandal:

The former treasurer for the National Republican Congressional Committee diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars -- and possibly as much as $1 million -- of the organization's funds into his personal accounts, GOP officials said yesterday, describing an alleged scheme that could become one of the largest political frauds in recent history.

For at least four years, Christopher J. Ward, who is under investigation by the FBI, allegedly used wire transfers to funnel money out of NRCC coffers and into other political committee accounts he controlled as treasurer, NRCC leaders and lawyers said in their first public statement since they turned the matter over to the FBI six weeks ago.

That's. Just. Perfect. The Republican Senatorial committee just allowed Mark Pryor of Arkansas to run unopposed (no thanks to Mike Huckabee, who passed). The Presidential nomination was won by John McCain who heretofore was despised by the rank and file givers of the Republican party. And now the congressional committee, as it turns out, has been diverting funds to the personal bank accounts of one bad apple.

All of which one would think would add up to a very bad fundraising year for the Republicans. Oh but that's not it, on the other side of the aisle, the Democrats have been raising record amounts, and if the nominee is to be Obama, they have an opponent who has a proven ability to raise tens of millions every single month.

Danger, Danger, Will Robinson. And it's not just the NRCC with this guy, he was also the treasurer for 83 GOP committees, all of which are under a cloud now.
