Who'll Tell Hillary?
A growing chorus of Democrats are recommending that Hillary Clinton give up her current bid to become president. Of course, most of the people who advocate such a view--such as Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy--are supporters of Barack Obama. But as the contest drags on, and anxieties keep rising about the long-term damage that the protracted fight is having on Democratic chances for re-taking the White House, it is inevitable that some Clinton supporters will come to a similar conclusion to those Obama backers who envision Hillary's exit from the race as a way to preserve party unity. It doesn't take a psychic to foretell a disastrous end to what once seemed like a slam-dunk win for Democrats next fall. With each passing day, adherents from both the Clinton and Obama camps seem to entrench themselves further in their my-candidate-or-McCain bunkers. Yes, the enemy of my enemy (John McCain) seems to have become Plan B for nearly one-third of those blinded by Plan A loyalty.
If one believes that the longer the Obama/Cinton bout goes on, the greater McCain's chances of winning in November become, then the obvious solution is for one of the Dem. candidates to take one for the team. Of course, Clinton supporters argue that it is Obama who should exit, but that case is the harder one to make, seeing as Obama is ahead by every conceivable metric we have. Indeed, the argument that Obama has run the stronger campaign, therefore he should step aside, is itself counter-intuitive.
So then, back to Hillary. Whether or not she should clear the way for Obama is, of course, a matter of great debate. Barack himself believes that's up to no one but Clinton. Another question, as posed by New York Magazine's John Heilmann, is: Who among Democrats has the clout to convince Clinton that it's time to pack it in? Certainly it wasn't Leahy. Nancy Pelosi, too, is seen as a hostile witness. Al Gore is doing his best to remain neutral. Ditto John Edwards and Jimmy Carter. We know who Bill Clinton favors, and it's hard to imagine him trying to convince his wife that the writing's on the wall. Chelsea, perhaps?
Heilmann thinks that to have any impact, the discouraging word will have to be delivered from a Clinton loyalist:
No, according to Hillary's adjutants, the people most likely to have sway with her on this topic are not party elders at all but instead her fiercest loyalists, those who've won her trust over the years by dint of their unwavering support. Familiar names from the annals of Clintondom are mentioned: Terry McAuliffe, Vernon Jordan, Rahm Emanuel (likely the only person in this club who is also close to Obama). So, too are prominent endorsers such as Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell. "If one of her major African- American endorsers, like Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, told her it was time to quit, that would be very powerful," adds a senior Clinton adviser.
Such speculation by-passes the person who is best qualified to advise Hillary Clinton, and that is, of course, Hillary Clinton, herself. I don't picture her as a Bush-like figure, eschewing all contact with newspapers and non-Fox-News outlets. While she suggests that she's going to drive this caravan right into Denver, whatever the numbers show, you have to think that a woman this smart will be able to understand the writing on the wall without anyone having to whisper in her ear.

Isn't it a joke that the vast majority of the news" media made it sound like Senator Leahey is only looking out for the party when he declared Senator Clinton should get out of the race. It was such a funny sight seeing Senator Leahey in the Ben and Jerrys' O Bama mobile many months ago. I am sure he thought Hillary Clinton should not be in the race then. Why the media point out that he has been working overtime for his candidate, from the beginning? Not a peep! As Helen Thomas said Friday evening, O Bama can walk on water. It seems that Rev Wright must walk on water too. That is a subject that we just can't talk about, because it is unfair to Senator O Bama. Diddn't he tell us that he hadn't heard any of the hate speech? We should all accept his word, because he said so. Can you imagine if Hillary had a miniser for twenty years that was spewing hatred for America. the media would go wild. It would be all right to talk about that. But it isn't O K to talk about O Bamas' poor judgement. I feel that Senator O Bama is being given a break because he claims to be black. That is not a raciest remark, it is the truth. The news' media seems to ignore any of O Bamas' misjudgements. How a not about his new ad in Pennsylvania, O Bama says he does not accept oil money? How about I would have left the church had Rev Wright not retired? Have you heard the new minister? H e condemned us for questioning those horrible words. He accused us causing the trouble for O Bama. Pennsylvania you can make a difference, don't let the news' media do the same thing that they did with George Bush, they gave him a pass for too long. Look whaat happened to our country. It seems like the same blind support for O Bama is very much the same thing' Poor judgementon their parts. Another word might be Bias. Have you seen the hate videos' of Rev Wrights' rantings and ravings, and the congrgation whooping and clapping with each additional hatred remark for the U S.? Why arn't they talking about that? Do you think it might just be bias?

WHY (KNOWLES) AREN'T YOU REPORTING ON THE BLATANT LIES THAT KEEP COMING OUT OF OBAMA'S MOUTH! THERE ARE SO MANY AND WHERE IS HIS LOVELY WIFE THESE DAYS, DID THEY PUT HER AND THE REVEREND UNDER WRAPS BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF WHAT MIGHT COME OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS! I AM SICK TO DEATH OF "SMOKE AND MIRRORS" OBAMA AND I CAN'T EVEN STAND TO LISTEN TO HIS VOICE ANYMORE.
FOXYLYNX2:24PMMar 31st 2008
WHY NO REPORTING ON THE 10 MILLION DOLLAR HOUSE THE CHURCH IS BUILDING FOR REV WRIGHT? SO MUCH FOR THE POOR PEOPLE! I CAN THINK OF NUMEROUS WAYS TO SPEND 10 MILLION THAT WOULD BE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY. WRIGHT IS A RACIST AND HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF FOR TAKING THAT KIND OF MONEY.

There is no debate. She's staying in it like millions and millions of people want her to.
There are also a lot of articles telling Hillary to stay in it, but I guess those don't matter.
If that poll is correct, that Hillary supporters will vote for McCain, well, clearly that should be yet another indication that Obama should drop out for the good of the party.
Everyone is just going to have to get over it. The race is neck and neck. Stop panicking because she might win.
No one can predict how people will vote in the next ten states, and we only know a fraction of Obama's dirty secrets, which will all come out soon enough.
I am SO looking forward to the backlash that is bubbling to the surface.

I am one of a group of tens of thousands of Hillary Clinton supporters throughout the Country. We are very well organized and united concerning our objectives and our numbers are growing daily. It is our sincere belief that Senator Clinton would serve our Country well as the next President and truly cares about the American people. However, we are also keenly aware that many members, though not all, of the Media have exhibited coverage which can easily be interpreted as biased against Clinton and favorable to her opponent. This is not fair. The Media is a powerful influential force in the minds of many and unfortunately,in our opinion, that force has had adverse effects on her profile in the eyes of all viewers. It is not my intention nor will I proceed to criticize other candidates but simply leave the decision process up to the people determined to seek out the real truth and character of each Candidate. We now find ouselves at a crossroad at which a decision had to be made. First, it was always and still is our intention to vote for Senator Clinton. After we carefully and completely studied all the information and facts pertaining to the Candidates, we are of the opinion that the Democratic Party does not offer us a viable alternative should Senator Hillary not receive the nomination. As a result, we have decided that it would be in our best interest and for the good of the Country to vote for Senator John McCain as an alternate choice. We are respectfully asking every Hillary supporter who shares our feeling to join us. In joining hands with us, we would simply ask you to send a message similiar to this one to each and every Newspaper in your area and ask family and friends who agree to do the same wherever they may be. Please remember the future of our Country lies in your hands and the United States of America is only as strong as the determination of its Citizens. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to address this isue and may God Bless you and may God Bless America.

errr ummm Katherine, the opposite is also true. Bottom line, your current posture is what the problem is. The widespread threats from both sides of this will insure that even if Hillary gets the nod she will not win in November. Obviously, you don't see that. The Obamabots are just as fanatic as you are, and in the end everbody who is sick and tired of a GOP lead government will have to suffer 4-8 more years of the same. Can our country last that long the way it is going?
Let the contests continue, sure, but come out unified in the end.
Also, regarding my post above, I played with the CNN delegate chart. With contests going as predicted, and maintaining a 10% edge either way, Obama needs 110 of the 340 Superdelegates remaining.

Thank you David! sometimes, I just feel, like "what is gong on?" Senator Barack Hussein Obama can do no wrong, and Senator Hillary Clinton can't breathe right? and this nation needs to "see" these things. That the media is only giving Obama a break...and the continually hits against Hillary, are unbelievable to me. I had family members fight in every war, and they loved this country.I have loved this country since I was old enough to know what that meant. and for Michelle Obama's remarks, that "now she is proud to be an American" and no one, seems to mind, that this woman, may be the First Lady? If she was unhappy here, then go somewhere else. No one forced the Obama family to stay in America. They belonged to a hate filled church, which again, the media, is just blowing over??? IF any other candidate did this, their political careers would be over, in one news cast, like 4 yrs ago? Senator Dean...when it seemed he was yelling into the michrophone? remember. All that man did was try to be heard over a large crowd. He didn't have a spiritual advisor for 20 yrs, that spewed hatred. This is not fair reporting. And I listen to the news, and I can't believe how much they all just love Obama? Wait, and if he gets into office, and their jobs are replaced, and this country continues to slid downward, and his terrorist friends are eating dinner at the white house on "our tax" dollars...it will be a different story. I wonder how many dinners Rev. Wright will be invited too? and we will be footing the bill for those dinners! Think people...
Liam blu2:51PMMar 31st 2008
This is to MIK, I don't think so. Listen, what do you hear....the sound of people wondering who Hussien Obama is, and his wife that is NOW proud to be an American, his pastor that hates white america, now building him a house for 10 million. MIK what can you do with 10 million? wouldn't that be nice? Can you afford a vacation to ST. Thomas for your family? If you can, well great, but I can't. I am working 2 jobs to put food on the table,I am trying to put kids thru college, I am trying to buy health care...this country needs a break. we need HILLARY
David C2:52PMMar 31st 2008
I am an Obama supporter who wants Hillary to stay in the race. This contest is making Obama a stronger candidate for the General election.
Hillary will drop out because of money, not because of what anyone tells her. When her supporters see the writing on the wall and stop giving money to a losing cause she will have no choice. A big part of Hillary's problem is that she was so over-confident about winning that she allocated way too much money to the General election rather than to the primaries, whereas Obama knew he had to fight furiously to win the primaries and kept most of his donations for these battles.
Maybe one could say Obama showed better judgement than Hillary did - isn't that what we want in our next President?
Liam blu2:59PMMar 31st 2008
People of Penn. its your turn now to vote....do not let the Obama champaign lie to you, tell you to stay home, that by talking to them, you have voted. you need to go to the polling stations, and cast your vote. Let your voice be heard. and for everyone out there, know this, Hillary has won every big state so far. She lost the caucuses because of what the Obama champaign did. And think, long and hard....How long until Senator Barack Hussein Obama has Rev. Wright over for dinner at the white house. and YOU ARE PAYING for it!!!!
Liam blu3:02PMMar 31st 2008
David C, what better judgement did Obama show? that he associates with terrorists, and takes money from them, or that he listens to hate speeches, and allows his children to also, which just keeps the hate alive and going? and that his spiritual advisor is now getting a 10 million dollar house? um...bad judgement if you ask me. Bad judgement that his wife is now Proud to be an American.....
Give Us HILLARY for President...she will and can save this great country of ours.
Mr. Clark3:02PMMar 31st 2008
David Knowles,
There are ten contests left. I don't see the harm in letting those play out. I can't remember the last time all 50 states got to vote in the primary/caucus season. It is a wonderful lesson for all the states that moved their primaries and caucuses up.
Also, it does give us Democrats longer to get to know both candidates. Either one of them could implode any day now as the pressure is so great.
The speculation of this ongoing nomination process destroying the Democratic party and leaving McCain as the next President is media-driven. The average person on the street wants this to continue. I may feel differently at some point, but for now I am relaxed and calm about the process as it is unfolding.
Sen. Clinton gets to decide when she is done running for President, not the media or the party-at-large. I personally don't believe Sen. McCain is electable and I fear the same is ultimately true of Sen. Obama.
Look at your own "Straw-Poll" numbers on the Democratic side. The media is no longer talking about the Wright controversy, but everyone I know still is. This whole election has shown a huge disconnect with the voters and the media. People actually flat-out lie to pollsters. Go figure. There is a general mistrust of the media at this point as well. Just my opinion from where I am and everyone I know.
Just let her run. Maybe that 5% chance she is given for pulling this off is worth it to her? There's your grit and passion. I was brought up believing those were good qualities to have. Stepping aside could be the biggest mistake she ever makes as we really don't know what the future holds. I've seen people overcome huge insurmountable obstacles in their lives and maybe this is one of them?
There simply is no rush for her to quit, not from where I am sitting. Oh, for the record, I will be voting Democratic no matter what in the fall...even if it hurts.
Sincerely and respectfully,
Mr. Clark

Oh I had to dodge a whole lot of bullets. She's a liar. She misspoke um let's see, I think it was about 3 times or was it 4 times. HILLARY IS A LIAR. SHE'S ALWAYS LYING. They wanted me to fly the plane but I was too busy dodging bullets and armed men trying to take us hostage.

Mr. Knowles,
I don't think it will come to this. Especially after two superdelegates have joined Obama in as many business days, and the rumor mills floating the notion that all 7 NC democratic reps will soon endorse him, I think a DNC plan B is taking form.
I suspect enough superdelegates will come forward behind Obama to give Obama a chance at the magic number 2025 through the elected delegate tally at the end of the remaining ten contests.
If he can hold his own, win what is expected, stay within reason through his losses, the DNC will stack the deck just enough to "demonstrate how the voters decided." If he falls short, then the superdelegates can reassess its other options.
Contest seems fair and square, offering Clinton an exit that spares her pride.
Expect more supers (less Gore, Edwards, Pelosi) to follow, if I am right
