McCain Learning Curve; MLK, Rebel Flag, Slavery
After stories by David Knowles and Caleb Howe on Republican Presidential candidate John McCain's awakening on the subject of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, which he voted against even as Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich voted for it. I was put in mind of several of the candidate's other epiphanies. Caleb called for forgiveness in his article, a reasonable request, to be sure. Forgiveness is not something that even requires the trespasser to ask for it. Even so, many will judge McCain by the sincerity of his regret. I am willing to take him at face value for purposes of this discussion, although the video below may make it seem otherwise.
Even if McCain is to be forgiven his opposition to the King holiday, does that mean he will be ready, on day one, to take this country away from the path that 81% of Americans say is in the wrong direction? Although he may or may not have had a sincere change of heart, can America afford to have a president that's always this slow on the uptake, this late to the party?
My colleague, David Knowles, correctly points out that McCain was 47 in 1983, the year he voted against the King holiday. He makes a good case that McCain's excuse that he didn't know enough about King at the time strains credibility. The fact that he didn't support the holiday until 1990, that would make him 54, completely collapses it.
In 1990, Arizonans were given an opportunity to vote to observe an MLK holiday. McCain successfully appealed to former President Ronald Reagan to support the holiday. In a letter to voters, Reagan wrote that he hoped Arizonans would "join me in supporting a holiday to commemorate these ideals to which Dr. King dedicated his life."Better late than never, I suppose, but does it speak well of his ability to lead on current issues? Well, maybe he kept up with the class on the Confederate Flag.
That's great! He even came through again this year, taking heat for this bold stand:
McCain said he "could not be more proud of the majority of the people of this state" who agreed the flag should be removed. Although the questioner, who identified himself as John William Hill, 51, of Charleston, got some scattered applause for his question, McCain's response produced a wave of applause that drowned out further comments from his critic. That's not the same thing as denouncing the flag. He's saying he's proud of the people's decision. Still, let's give him that, we'll mark McCain's "Road to Damascus" moment re: the Confederate Flag at 2002, 2 years after he stopped saying "gook" in public, but 5 years before he retired "tar baby".
Later, McCain told reporters, "I believe the issue has been resolved in the minds of the overwhelming majority of the people of South Carolina. You can tell from the crowd reaction. They don't want it reopened."
What about the issue of slavery? Well, I am proud to report that John McCain didn't just talk about slavery, he took action. In 2007.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Wednesday the Senate should apologize for slavery and segregation, calling them "dark chapters in our history."Perhaps work on this important bill is what caused the "scheduling conflict" that kept him from showing up to the candidates' forum at historically black Morgan State University in September.
As it turns out, McCain may be ahead of the curve, or at least of state and national politicians. To date, only 6 states have apologized for slavery, and the US Senate has not. In fact, I was unable to locate any proposed bill based on McCain's courageous call to action last October. Still, assuming this was sincere, and not a toothless pander, that puts his awakening on slavery at 137 years in the making.
It's nice to know that, even at age 71, John McCain is still teachable, but it is little comfort for those of us looking for a president to lead us somewhere besides the wrong war.

tommy....its nice to hear that republicans are now apologizing for the crimes against blacks. To me it just seems they are just doing this to get votes, and to make themselves feel pure from the crimes of their fathers....I'm a mexican american whose peoples have endured crimes, ethnic cleansing, racism and the loss of lands that were taken away by this government, and no one has made an issue of this...although I believe its basically our fault. Ranting and raving about what has been done to us, just does not seem appealing. We have been americans long before this country came into existance. We are native to this continent, and we are staying in our homeland, as proud americans, forever.

John MaCain would still be 100x better for our country than a "know-nothing preacher" and a truth-stretching lady, the latter who don't know how to spell military let alone lead it.

DRAFT AL GORE MOVEMENT
(DNC) The Democratic National Committee, goers are talking about invoking the 1968 precedent where (D-MA) US/Senator Teddy “Edward” Kennedy opposed (D-MN) US/Senator Hubert Humphrey, and put himself on the ticket (without a single primary) along with Joseph McCarthy and used (D-Il) Chicago, Mayor Richard J. Daley as the means to create dissonance and muscle. (D-MN) Hubert Humphrey won the nomination but lost the election. There is a definite feeling among Democratic both (D-IL) US/Senator, Barrack “Barry” Hussein Obama, and (D-NY) US/Senator Hillary Diane Rodham-Clinton, after the 6th of May, if the nominating campaign is not ended, are dead in the water against (R-AR) US/Senator John McCain.
And, we as Independents will swing our support to (R-AR) US/Senator John McCain. Banner, not necessarily the Republican banner, McCain is a “Maverick” within the (GOP) Grand Old Party.
To prevent this from happening, and stopping the Democratic Party from going the way of the previous party, as there are rumors that an Independent Party is in the making comprised of democrats and republicans in an Andrew Jackson defection from their respective parties - who will make their debut around the 15th of May. The historical precedent that was set in a different era is the 1824 election. In this one, a private deal between Henry Clay and eventual winner, John Quincy Adams, was suspected, and it resulted in a massive public shift away from the party and to its opponent, Andrew Jackson in a landslide 1828 election.
There is a two fold plan that seems to be in the offing.
PHASE ONE: Settle the Florida and Michigan seating of delegates prior to the Democratic National Convention, by the (RBC) Democratic Rules & Bylaws Committee, or its creation the Credentials Committee.
1.If a brokered deal is not reached between Clinton and Obama campaigns between May 7th and June 29th working in conjunction with Democratic Party officials, too settle the seating of Florida, and Michigan the process will begin.
2.All states are supposed to elect their members by June 21.
3.June 22, we should at least know all the members' identities, and how big a voting advantage one candidate might have over the other.
4.Until June 29, the rules and bylaws committee (RBC) has such jurisdiction.
3. Anytime after June 29, which is the date on the official Democratic calendar when the credentials committee consisting of (186) members assume jurisdiction over any credentials fights... The credentials committee doesn't have to wait until the convention to make a determination.
And divided into (3) Standing Committee’s. The DNC assigns each state a number of members per committee, based on that state's population and Democratic voting strength.
A. Standing credential committee
B. Standing platform committee
C. Standing rules committee
Membership;
(25) (DNC) Chairman Howard Dean appointees (Done)
(?) Alabama
(51) California members
(24) Florida
(21) Illinois members
(12) Massachusetts
(18) Michigan
(33) New York members
(21) Ohio members
(?) Tennessee
(9) Wisconsin
All (50) State’s will provide committee members, however, no state is allowed to vote on a matter pertaining to itself, so those members will have to recuse themselves. In this case Michigan and Florida will not be part of the process.
The number of each candidate member’s per committee is determined by;
(A) Total state committee members
(B) Total primary/caucus percentage won)
(C) The number of each candidate member’s per committee
Example: (A) X (B) = (C)
(Massachusetts 12 members) X (0.57% primary/caucus won) = 6.84 Rnd. To (7)
In this case there would be (2) on (2) of the committee’s with (1) having (3) determined by state official lottery
NOTE: Politico.com speculative estimate’s that, based upon on voting results so far, Obama has a 65 to 56 lead on the credentials committee.
PHASE TWO: And not wanting a repeat of numerous Democratic Convention debacles of the past, there is talk of over-riding the delegate/population vote by (100) or more Super-delegates withholding their vote’s on the first ballot and then calling for a “Draft” of Former Vice President, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, and Oscar Winner Al Gore to accept the party nomination as the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States. And, there is a good chance this could happen as many see that former Al Gore lost his last bid do in fact to the Clinton’s, along with a stolen Florida, vote via. The then (R-FL) Governor Jeb Bush.

I guess AOL couldn't print the story on the Clintons tax returns because they couldn't find anything bad!!!!!!!!!!!! Go figure!! All the media seems to do is shove Obama down our throats.
Big News flash..Clintons have tons of money!! No kidding really?? Bill can make a cool million with one speech. Who cares, they have more money than they could ever spend in this lifetime.
Has anyone stopped to ask themselves why Hillary would put herself through all this negative fight for the Presidency?? They already have money and fame and power. PERHAPS, JUST PERHAPS...SHE REALLY CARES ABOUT AMERICA!!! HELLO!! WAKE UP FELLOW AMERICAN DEMOCRATS!!
True Americans will never unite behind this Obama fool, he is undeserving of the Presidency. He honestly thinks he is the messiah.
This Obama fool has an extensive drug history, he is a racist bigot along with Rev Wright and his wife, who knows where his loyalties lie with, once a Muslim always a Muslim. Read his books!!
Are we willing to risk our country to this man?? Have you people stopped to remember 9/11!! It's not worth the risk. The thought of this man running our country should scare each and every one of us. We are so very lucky to have the freedoms we have.
Get a clue fellow democrats/Americans. We will never ever trust this man to run this country. We dont even know him.
What an arrogant fool he is to think Al Gore would ever consider being any part of this. Oh...I forgot he's the messiah and even Mr. Gore will do as he says!!! Obama is UNELECTABLE!!!
I love this country and I know we are way too smart to put a racist hate mongering person/people like the messiah in our white house.
We don't need him to "unite" us. We are united as Americans and when all is said and done..Obama will lose. Wonder what kind of speech he'll give then?? When the repubs finish with him he'll be lucky to have any kind of political career left!!
Go Hillary!! All the way!! If not my vote is for Mccain!! For America!!! These two will keep our country safe.
P.S--I am a lifelong hardcore democrat, never cast a repub vote my entire life. But I will this time!!!

JOEDENVER60- WHAT CRIMES ARE YOU REFERRING TO? SAVE YOUR TIRELESS RHETORIC AND GIVE ME SOME EXAMPLES.
Wasn't it a Republican who signed the MLK holiday into law?
Remember J. William Fulbright? He was a Democrat Senator from Arkansas. He served from 1944- 1974. He was a staunch segregationist. He voted against Brown vs. Board of Education, and filibustered the Civil Rights act of 1964. He also voted against the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Care to take a guess who considered Senator Fulbright his mentor? Bill Clinton.
Republicans took control of Congress in 1994. Until then, the Democrats controlled it for 40 years. Before a bill is signed into law, it begins it's arduous journey through Congress. Most don't make it to the President's desk. Blacks have historically voted for Democrats through the years, to the tune of 86% overall (though much higher recently).
Let's say, for the sake of argument, there is merit to the claims some Blacks think- that they are still being denied racial equality and opportunities because of the discrimination and bigotry among most White people. I see no evidence of it, but if it were true, then let me ask black people this- Are you better off now than you were 10, 20, 30, or 40 years ago? Since you steadfastly support Democrats at the polls, would you be willing to admit that, maybe, your lack of your supposed inequality might be due to the same party you are loyal to?

I notice you use a small a. So you do not mean the USA. Are you La Razza?
I resent your accusation of McCain lying to get votes.
It is obvious why Obama got together with Richardson For votes. I am quite sure there is something in it for Richardson too. It will come out.
Why do you think Obama is lying to the blacks about his own heritage? For VOTES.
Currently running for office is Barack Obama. His father is listed with the Kenya Gov as a Arab African.
Barack has 3 Arab names. It is my opinion Barack is an Arab. His family name is Swahili.Arab traders began to settle among the Africans of the coast, resulting in the emergence of a people and culture known as Swahili. The East African Slave Trade was established in that region. Arabs captured and sold slaves, white, black, Asian. In the mid 1600's there were 32,000 whites slaves in Algiers. Blacks should go after the Arabs. They got deep pockets and are the worst slavers of all. Only about 4% of all USA residents were slave owners. Many white men and women died freeing the slaves. I do not feel guilty. Sorry/Sad that they were held yes, but not guilty.
Why should McCain apologize for slavery or any person in the United States of AMERICA? He didn't do I didn't do it NONE of us DID IT!
I have no quarrel with Martin Luther King. Most of us honor him. He is honored in almost every town and city with a street, avenue or boulevard. But to honor him should be a choice not a penance.
Now Aztecs are laying a claim going back to maybe the 9th century? I say get a grip.

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." - President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998
"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." - President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998
"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face." - Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998
"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983." - Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998
"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs." - Letter to President Clinton, signed by Sens. Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others Oct. 9, 1998
"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." - Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998
"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies." - Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999
"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has invigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies." - Letter to President Bush, Signed by Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL,) and others, December 5, 2001
"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandated of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." - Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002
"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002
"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002
"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002
"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..." - Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002
"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force-- if necessary-- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002
"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002
"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do" - Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002
"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weap ons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members .. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." - Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002
"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002
"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real ..." - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

Obama has made some boneheaded remarks such as bombing Pakistan, getting out of Iraq and then going back in
"Obama's efforts to distance himself from Islam, is in contrast with his innovative approach to US relations with its Islamist challengers.
President George W. Bush has chosen the "iron fist" option by invading Afghanistan and Iraq, building quarantine around Iran, keeping the Baathist regime in Syria in check, and helping a dozen Muslim states fight Al Qaida or its variants on their soil. Both Senators
McCain and Clinton offer variations on the same theme, albeit with caveats designed to satisfy their respective constituencies.
By contrast, Obama is offering a policy of dialogue and accommodation. He has opposed the listing of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation, and proposed a grand bargain with the regime in Damascus. Obama is even prepared to ignore two United Nations' Security Council
resolutions that require Iran to stop its uranium enrichment programme as a precondition for talks at the highest level.
In an important symbolic move designed to signal an end of the special relationship between Israel and the United States,, Obama has become the first major American presidential candidate in more than 30 years not to commit himself to transferring the US embassy to the Jewish state from Tel Aviv to Occupied Jerusalem.
Last but not least, Obama has promised to withdraw from Iraq within the first year of his presidency, thus meeting one of the key demands of radical Muslim forces, whether Sunni or Shiite.
The message is clear: Obama wants a new relationship with radical forces in the Islamic world while distancing the US from its traditional allies in the region. In other words, he proposes to reverse policies that have taken shape over more than six decades under 12 successive American presidents.
successive American presidents.
It is this revolutionary idea that deserves to be closely examined, studied and debated."

From the 5th Annual U.S.-Islamic World Forum
Tamara Cofman Wittes, who's attending the annual 5th Annual U.S.-Islamic World Forum notices that anti-US rhetoric is way down this year. Instead of fire-breathing anti-American keynote speakers, "the opening keynote was instead delivered by President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan, who argued that Muslims in Afghanistan and Bosnia were right to expect and accept American military intervention to relieve their suffering, and America was just in coming to their aid."
The reason for the change in tone has been a grudging respect for successes in American foreign policy and Washington's new focus on Iran.

Can we expect the la Razza to take us into a Civil War?
Or a fight with Mexico? I have no problem with Mexican pride as long as the USA comes first. But I will not
agree to subjudication of the USA constitution. Will you let Arabs from foreign countries join in with you? Why does la Razzo allow Palestine views into your thinking? Can we expect terrorist attacks from you?
"A house divided against itself cannot stand." Lincoln
The USA has threats from Islamic terrorists is la Razzo going to take a page from their play book? Follow the New Black Panthers play book and change America the Melting pot into Molten America?
It makes me angry that the USA policy of open arms will come back and bite us. One of my dearest friends is from Columbia. She is so proud to be citizen of the USA. She said she cried when she was sworn in.
With the USA melting pot there will be no way to tell friend from foe....Has your life been so awful in the USA? Is life so wonderful in Mexico? Did your family plan on coming up HERE to then make a fight? Is the hospitality of the USA thrown in it's face? Sounds to me like we are in the 3rd phase of Washington's vision.
The way I see it la Razzo plans to throw in with the Arabs and destroy America from the inside. Yes I am upset.

tzada......not a chance in hell will we let arabs join us. Our religious attitude is more or less conservative, far different than muslims. The la Razza is far from being a terrorist group, but a community organization, to assist any minorities of any color, that need assistance. la Razza is made up of american citizens who have been born here, and are not as paranoid as you seem to be. We are what we like to be reffered to as "Chicanos", mexicans whose fathers fought in the revolution against the tyranny of the Mexican government that was controlled by a European government called Spain, who then sold us out to the a newly formed government which is now the USA. We as a people welcomed the new government. unfortunetly, ehtnic cleansing was widely used to take away lands that were populated by mexicans in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, California, Utah, Nevada, the southwestern part of the USA. Have you ever wondered why there are so many border towns? Read the history of the southwest, maybe then, you will learn to appreciate the values, courage and commitment we bring to this country. You gringos, which means "foreigner" have a crazy idea that there was allways borders, and you were americans since forever. We want only to respect our neighbors including canada. We need to build bridges, not fences or walls, as was done in Berlin. We, like you want secure borders, but lets do it in a manner that will set an example to the world what an American is. As proud rightous people.
