We small town people whether we are from Ohio, Pennsylvania, WV, Illinois or Indiana deeply resent his characterization of us as bitter. We are the backbone of this country. You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

People who criticize Obama for saying people in rural areas are bitter, cling to religion and guns, and fought illegal imagination have never lived in a places where once there where plenty of jobs but now are few. Year after year the government promises to bring jobs back and never do. Well I lived in a very small town in WVA where that happen and saw familes go hungy because of no jobs. People leanded on there churches and use guns to hunt food to feed there children. Obama told the truth, people who criticize him would not know the truth if the truth smack them in the face. Go to McDowell county in WVA and you will see for yourself. I was luck I got out but others are stuck. The coal mines are closed and there are no jobs and very little hope.

That's just it Johnstown Pa hasn't done well since Carter was president. I went been there to spend six weeks with my dad who was dying and when I wasn't at the hospital I was driving around seeing how poorly that place has fallen. I went to apply for a job at what use to be Bethlem Steel. They advertised for ten positions at the company that replace it. I stood in line with roughly 3,000 other people to take a written test and interview. The news was all over it because there are so few jobs there.
