Wright's NAACP Speech - Definition or Disaster?
Earlier today I watched the Bill Moyers interview (thanks, David, my DVR didn't catch it) with Bill Moyers on PBS and was glad to have the opportunity to hear what Rev. Wright had to say outside of the sound bites so prevelant on TV and these intertubes.
I was quite pleasantly surprised when this evening saw CNN airing, in its entirely without commercials, Wright's keynote speech an NAACP fundraiser in Detroit. For those of you interested, the speech can be seen here for now - and I'm sure more widely available elsewhere in the morning. CNN also cancelled their evening programming to get on-the-ground reaction from Soledad O'Brien and Roland Martin with other commentary from Obama and Clinton supporters.
Rich Sanchez said throughout the course of this coverage that they were being deluged with email - mostly positive. I too found Wright compelling. Alternately, he was deadly serious on the the dinner's theme, "A Change is Gonna Going to Come", academic in the arts and theology, and downright funny. ABC's Jake Tapper tooks some notes (a skill I'm trying to work on for you all):
Most of Wright's speech addressed the theme of the dinner, "A Change is Gonna Come," talking about the differences between different cultures and races, saying "a change is coming because we no longer see others as being deficient...Different doesn't mean deficient."
"The black religious tradition is different," he said in comments that seemed to address the controversy about his sermons. "We do it a different way."
Wright discussed how different groups have seen other groups as "deficient." After saying English-speakers saw Arabic-speakers as "being deficient," Wright mentioned Obama almost as an aside.
"Please run and tell my stuck-on-stupid friends that Arabic is a language -- is a language, it is not a religion," he said. "Barack HUSSEIN Obama," he said, emphasizing the Illinois senator's middle name dramatically, "Barack HUSSEIN Obama, Barack HUSSEIN Obama. There are Arabic-speaking Christians, there Arabic-speaking Jews, Arabic-speaking Muslims and Arabic-speaking atheists. Arabic is a language, it is not a religion. Stop trying to scare folks by giving them this Arabic name like it's some disease."
No matter what your leanings, I do recommend you all watch the speech as Wright has been one of our most favorite topics here at Political Machine lately. He ain't going away anytime soon and neither are you, so we might as well have an informed discussion about it.
I went looking for some immediate reaction from the grassroots blogs - the pro-Clinton Taylor Marsh and a timely diary on the now mostly Clinton supporter-free Daily Kos. Needless to say, the pro-Clinton crowed found Wright terrible - divisive, racist, uppity, arrogant; while the pro-Obama group found the speech intelligent, educational and positive. I suspect I know how our readers will come down on this.
Will this have a negative impact on Obama? Probably. Will this help Hillary? Well, alot of people will think so. Even some pro-Obama people wish Wright would just go away. That wish on either side will not come true. If Obama is the nominee, we'll all have our share of the good Reverend everyday between now and the November election. I'm personally glad he's out speaking now. Was it self-serving? Could be - this man is no shrinking violet and he definately has an ego. He also mentioned he has a book coming out. That will be jumped on immediately.
Jeremiah Wright is a learned and distinguished academic (two masters and a doctorate), ex-Marine and revered minister in his community who no doubt does not wish to have his long, successful career reduced to a few You Tube clips and has every right to defend his life's work. I wish him (and by extension Obama) the best. Perhaps now is the time for us to shake out the true feelings about race in this country so we know where everybody's coming from.
I'm looking forward to everyone's reaction. I'd especially like to hear from the African American readers who know alot more about traditionally Black churches than I.

I do believe that what was said above needs to me repeated not only
here but on all the airwaves. What the media has done is akin to what
Limbaugh does every day, and that is not something any American should
be proud of. We need to stand up for what we value, for what we believe
is the truth and we shouldn't accept anything less than the truth. It
matters much more than where we are, what direction we are headed in.
It should be obvious what direction we are headed in. I only hope it
isn't too late ...
(copied from jassmedian)
"It's not only unethical, but should be illegal for the media to
quote snippets of a person's speech or sermon, and spin it for a
totally different meaning just to ramp up controversy. It demeans out
political process, and insults the electorate. The media is
squandering it's fourth amendment rights, and needs to take its share
of responsibility for cheapening, and demeaning our political process
with its "selective quotation" methods. The main stream media has a
responsibility and duty to give us the full story please to help us
make an informed decision, not just something to induce a
demonstrably misleading controversy. They are a very big part of the
problem, not the solution."

When this first came out, Obahma's chruch put the sermons on you tube and subsequently they received hundreds of apologies
old wise one2:09AMApr 28th 2008
This is one that is going to backfire on those who do not do the research for themselves, do not read the whole story, but instead depend on what others say. The truth will out, and from what I have read from those who have listened to Wright's sermons the response is very positive. And by the way, what Wright was trying to do is instill Black pride in the children, just like the Irish do on St Patricks day. The comments aired here are mostly racist and reflect what too many Americans really believe and that is not something to be proud of. Remember, like it or not, our country was founded on genocide, and the story doesn't improve much from then on ontil only very recently. So if you think I am proud of the likes of Rush Limbaugh and his dittoheads, you are well, the same as he is. And any intelligent person knows all too well what that is.

My Old Wise One has said it all. I have much more to post, some learning ideas and information that I thouoght might meet at least semi-open heart.
My breath is taken and I need to collect it before I come back.
Denise, for as long as you have been observing Political and for all your efforts to help us get through the sluge, I love you.
Back in a minute.

Anyone who really listened to Obama''s speech about Wright will recall that he said the chruch has done a lot of wonderful things for people. THe congregation incudes people of all races, and the primary attempt was to uplift everyone. It is a fact that SOME whites have messed up, and until we all accept responsibility for what has been done we will not progress to the next level. A good father does not accept it when his son murders. Even if it is "family".A true patriout does not stand by when his country fails to live up to the values that made us great. When we stoop to the levels of those who hate, we will not be great for long. When we hate those who hate us, it is like fighting the devil with his own weapons, and guess what, the devil wins by default. Simple as that.

I haven't heard anyone be fair and balanced concerning Rev. Wright's comments yet, so I guess I'll try to start the conversation. Strong and wrong, beat weak and meek every time. Clearly, Rev. Wright's words were strong and he may be wrong concerning the HIV comments. Does he have proof? Without proof you would need an apology, but don't underestimate Rev. Wright. He is a powerful, thinking man. If he can proove his statements as well as he defended himself today, then this can only help. I don't know about the origins of the HIV virus, but do you really think 20 people could bring this nation to it's knees while the President read "My Pet Goat?" If guilt by association eliminates a political candidate, then what about the relationship America has with the Bin Laden Family? How can we capture a cell phone and stop looking for the man? Rev. Wright doesn't need help defending himself. It made me feel proud about being Black. We didn't teach this generation to hate.
Faith2:30AMApr 28th 2008
I happened to catch Rev. Wright, he is a powerful speaker and I must admit I enjoyed all he had to say.
Jack2:32AMApr 28th 2008
Hillary is gong to tar baby, Rev. Wright. Ain't he cute, but don't want to get caught in the briar patch. She and Wolfson are anti-intellectual, they are willing to castigate the African-American community to win, and she is such a narcissist that she will burn the party to the ground before she lets a black man win the nomination. Shame on you Clintons
Bring your family down to the riverside
Look to the east to see where the fat stock hide
Behind four walls of stone
the rich man sleeps
It’s time
we put the flame torch to their keep
Burn down the mission
if we’re gonna stay alive
Watch the black smoke fly to heaven
See the red flame light the sky
Burn down the mission
Burn it down to stay alive
It’s our only chance of living
Take all you need to live inside

SINCE WHEN DID MAINTAINING PARTY UNITY BECOME THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF HILLARY CLINTON?
SHE OWES NOBODY NOTHING .
SHE HAS A RIGHT TO RUN TO WIN.. .
OBAMA SHOULD BE TRYING TO WIN TOO , RATHER THAN RESTING ON HIS LAURELS AND COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW HILLARY IS DESTRYONG HIM.
DESTRYOING YOUR OPPONENT IS WHY THEY CALL IT POLITICS. AND BOY DID HILLARY "OBLITERATE" OBAMA IN PA. $50 MILLION A MONTH AND ALL.
NOW COMES JEREMIAH WRIGHT AND ITS ALL HILLARY'S FAULT.
SEND THE ONE-YR SENATOR HOME TO ILLINOIS,

A racist is a racist. You can fool some of the people some of the time. But, you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

well, I guees a change is going to come, the way we see others, not as deficient, but different...I think , judging from some of the comments above, we are going to see intelligent and no so intelligent and suddenly it will become so easy to tell the "difference."
IQ3:54AMApr 28th 2008
Obama's charisma has peeked! His electability must be tested; and for the last 2 months the scrutiny is yielding information that was not known about his judgment and unscrupulous associations he has had. A risky proposition!
Clinton was a leading candidate and without any unknowns resurfacing in the contest, she has consistently been endorsed by the popular electorate states including since her Texas/Ohio/Pennsylvania victories. Clinton is resurfacing!
Obama's charm and eloquence is not sufficient to define the U.S. presidency, although it may be necessary nationally and internationally, it is not sufficient.
Clinton has depth and dedication! She withstood the turbulence during Bill's presidency, and she has also endured the intensity of negative media during the last several months of the contest. Perhaps her campaign has not done its job well, but that should not take away from her, her experience and resilience that are essential for a U.S. Presidential candidate. She will withstand the Republican onslaught that is bound to be directed toward the democratic candidate during the general election.
Obama’s Charisma and charm has peeked and is diminishing rapidly as we head to the general election …. An unwise choice from the DNC standpoint! Obama is untested!
Super delegates’ job must entail voting in the candidate who can win the White House…. Among the two contenders it has to be Hillary Clinton.
old wise one4:07AMApr 28th 2008
Uhhh,IQ Can you think? Think about what Clinton said about Iran...She said she will, if president. "obliberate" Iran If Iran attacks Israel. So, she will murder millions of peoples, to start with, cut off our oil perhaps forever, spread a lot of radiation around to boot. Let me tell you what she is like. In a just out book, five witnesses spoke about what she said when Bill lost his congressional race. When they got back to their headquartters, Hillary shouted to Bill's campaign manager "You F***ing Jew bastard" Then a few ashtrays were thrown around. Yeah, she would bomb Iran for sure, instantly without even thinking about the consequences. Think about that, I would take McSame before I would take her, and for good reason. I would even take Bush before I would trust our existence to her.
old wise one4:22AMApr 28th 2008
Another thing. Perhaps the biggest challange America is facing is the Arab world. Read "oil." Without oil there would be no economy, without the economy there would be no stock market. It would CRASH and our creditors (China) would take over. So, who is best to deal with the Arabs? Certainly not any women, given how they regard woman. Can Mrs Clinton change that?
So who is left?

I stole this from the hiphop blog
Truthfully i disagree with those who think Jeremiah Wright's speech today is a nail in Barack Obama's Presidential coffin. Never have i believed in Obama's candidacy than now. I personally think everyone should be judged by his or her own actions.
I just listened to this speech for the fourth time now. I feel inspired and motivated. I can now relate better to Obama's message of Hope and Change. I now understand why Obama would not throw this man under the bus when it was politically correct to do so. I now understand the reason most people connect with Obama's message of hope, despite some lack of Wasshington experience. I think i now understand better Obama's faith in the American people. I now understand the "something" about Obama that made him so unique and an excellent choice without concrete reasons.
I think there is a philosophical connection that attracted Obama to this man - high intellectual analysis, which transcends the level of reasoning of the average politician. I now reassess most of Obama's comments, and see the reason why he titled one of his books: "An Audacity of Hope", after one of Wright's sermon.
Just like MLK, i believe history shall judge Wright as a national hero who could relate change in a more concrete term for neutrals like myself. A change in attitude is what can make our great country regain its moral leadership around the world.
