Obama Graffiti Illustrates Divide
It appeared on a lonely street corner in Chicago: a stenciled silhouette of Barack Obama holding a microphone that connects to the United States. Immediately one wonders, What does it mean? We can assume that this graffiti, somewhere on the streets of his hometown, is a gesture of support for Senator Obama. But it's hard to deny the bleak effect it has on the viewer.
Obama stands on a street corner--one hand holding a microphone, the other hand pleading--while on the other side hovers the United States, streaked with dripping paint. The only link between the Senator and his country is a long, meandering wire that he seems one step away from tripping over.
The raw loneliness is also marked by the image's physical disconnectedness. A passerby on one side of the street only sees Obama speaking to a rally, while someone on the other side sees nothing but the U.S. floating from a frail string. Only a person turning the corner or standing on the other side of the street sees the complete image. Even then, the street corner's three-dimensional divide is hard to ignore.
But, what about the image itself? Is the Illinois senator and probable Democratic presidential nominee speaking to us or through us? Is the fate of our nation inexplicably linked to this agent of change, or are we simply the vehicle or amplifier for his personal message and ambitions?

the usa needs to turn the corner. barak is a true statesman in every sense of the word. he is a highly respected and influential political leader who is devoted to public service. once he is commander and chief you will see a higher state of order in the white house. those who are corrupt will be exposed as such and he will draw those like himself who have integrity and are not afraid to stand up for this country and what is right no matter what the popular thing may be. he is going to unite red/blue black/white across the boards. i am tired of politics as usually and mccain and hilliary are just more of the same. turn the corner america turn the corner. obama/08
Marcia,
The President of the United States is the Commander IN Chief. Just fyi.

I am amazed how people are so easily swayed by the media. If you believe that Hillary is the better candidate because of .... what? Experience? She was the first lady, as in wife to the President. You know, she gave the parties and made sure everyone that spent the night paid up in the morning. OK, that was mean, sorry, couldn't help it. Barack Obama does not have the political baggage that causes people to get in bed with people they don't necessarily agree with. He’s known to be able to get people to forget their differences and sit down to talk and come to amenable terms. We need that now. All this in-fighting is killing our country. We are all Americans, not Democrats, not Republicans, etc., we are Americans and that used to mean something. We need to start acting like we are the great nation that we were. Our money is nearly worthless. Aren’t you tired of being the laughing stock of the world? No respect.
dawn, yes Hillary Clinton was the First Lady for 8 yrs and now she is a US Senator. She is a highly educated, accomplished woman in her own right.
Here are just a few:
1. Her first cause was children, fighting abuse, and chairing the Children's Defense Fund.
2. She began her career as a lawyer after graduating from Yale Law School in 1973.
3. following her career as a Congressional legal counsel; she was named the first female partner at Rose Law Firm in 1979 and was listed as one of the one hundred most influential lawyers in America in 1988 and 1991.
4. During 1974 she was a member of the Nixon impeachment inquiry staff in Washington D.C., advising the House Committee on the Judiciary during the Watergate scandal. She helped research procedures of impeachment and the historical grounds and standards for impeachment.
5. Hillary co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, a state-level alliance with the Children's Defense Fund, in 1977.
6. In late 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the board of directors of the Legal Services Corporation.7. She was the First Lady of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and 1983 to 1992, and was active in a number of organizations concerned with the welfare of children, and was on the board of Wal-Mart and several other corporate boards.
8. Bill Clinton appointed her chair of the Rural Health Advisory Committee where she successfully obtained federal funds to expand medical facilities in Arkansas' poorest areas without affecting doctors' fees.
9. One of the most important initiatives of the entire Clinton governorship, she fought a prolonged but ultimately successful battle against the Arkansas Education Association to put mandatory teacher testing as well as state standards for curriculum and classroom size in place.
10. She introduced Arkansas' Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youth in 1985, a program that helps parents work with their children in preschool preparedness and literacy.
11. As First Lady of the United States she took a very prominent role in public policy.
12. She was the initial first lady to hold a post-graduate degree and to have her own professional career up to the time of entering the White House. She was also the initial first lady to take up an office in the West Wing of the White House.
13. She fought hard for Universal Health Care as First Lady, although it wasn't successful, it's something she learned from.
14. She visited over 80 countries as First Lady giving important speeches, about such controversial topics as human rights/women's rights in China.
15. Her major initiative, the Clinton Health Care Plan, failed to gain approval by the Congress in 1994, but in 1997 she helped establish the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and the Adoption and Safe Families Act.
16. As a Senator and after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Hillary worked with her colleagues to secure the funds New York needed to recover and rebuild.
17. She fought to provide compensation to the families of the victims, grants for hard-hit small businesses, and health care for front line workers at Ground Zero.
18. She is the first New Yorker ever to serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
19. She has visited troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and in countless other locations, truly understanding the challenges facing our troops.
20. Hillary passed legislation to track the health status of our troops so that conditions like Gulf War Syndrome would no longer be misdiagnosed.
21. She is an original sponsor of legislation that expanded health benefits to members of the National Guard and Reserves and has been a strong critic of the Administration's handling of Iraq.
22. She has introduced legislation to tie Congressional salary increases to an increase in the minimum wage.
23. She has supported a variety of middle-class tax cuts, including marriage penalty relief, property tax relief, and reduction in the Alternative Minimum Tax, and supports fiscally responsible pay-as-you-go budget rules.
24. She helped pass legislation that encouraged investment to create jobs in struggling communities through the Renewal Communities program.
25. She authored legislation that has been enacted to improve quality and lower the cost of prescription drugs and to protect our food supply from bioterrorism.
26. She sponsored legislation to increase America's commitment to fighting the global HIV/AIDS crisis.
27. She has lead the fight for the expanded use of information technology in the health care system to decrease administrative costs, lower premiums, and reduce medical errors.
28. Clinton has successfully worked to ensure the safety of prescription drugs for children, with legislation now included in the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act.
29. She has also proposed expanding access to child care.
30. She has passed legislation that will bring more qualified teachers into classrooms and more outstanding principals to lead our schools.
31. Hillary is one of the original cosponsors of the Prevention First Act to increase access to family planning.
32. She fought with the Bush Administration and ensured that Plan B, an emergency contraceptive, will be available to millions of American women and will reduce the need for abortions.
33. She introduced the Count Every Vote Act of 2005 to ensure better protection of votes and to ensure that every vote is counted.
Senator Clinton has been fighting for causes for 35 yrs. Her accomplishments are staggering. Those who are questioning her accomplishments, and the things she has fought for, should take a history lesson.

Katherine,
In an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg Barack Obama said:
"I think the idea of Israel and the reality of Israel is one that I find important to me personally. Because it speaks to my history of being uprooted, it speaks to the African-American story of exodus, it describes the history of overcoming great odds and a courage and a commitment to carving out a democracy and prosperity in the midst of hardscrabble land. One of the things I loved about Israel when I went there is that the land itself is a metaphor for rebirth, for what's been accomplished. What I also love about Israel is the fact that people argue about these issues, and that they're asking themselves moral questions."
Not exactly the words of a Jew/Israel hater, now are they!

From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby
(CNN) — James Carville has been one of Hillary Clinton's most energetic defenders, but on Monday he all but declared Barack Obama will become the Democratic nominee for president.
Speaking to students at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, Carville argued Clinton should stay in through the final nominating contest in early June, but said the Democratic tide appears to be moving in Obama's direction.
"I still hear some dogs barking," Carville said, according to The State newspaper. "I'm for Senator Clinton, but I think the great likelihood is that Obama will be the nominee."
"As soon as I determine when that is, I'll send him a check," he added.
Asked about who might share a ticket with Obama, Carville floated Clinton's name, as well as that of Clinton ally Gen. Wesley Clark. Carville also mentioned Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg as possible running mates, according to Greenville News.
NEED ANYONE SAY MORE?

It is clearly negative just like he is and has been since the start. What are we Democrats trying to do, lose by putting Obama in as our nominee? Does the Democrat Party really fear women power that much that we prefer to lose rather than nominate Hillary? Rest assured there are millions of "US" who will not support Obama no matter what Hillary ask us to do. This is a dark time for the Democrats if, we continue on this path. Think voters and superdelegates before we get beat!!!
Jaelyn6:46PMMay 13th 2008
Mary O,
Where are these "millions" you speak of? I only see 30-40 of you here at best.

Jaelyn:
OBama LIES. Don't you get it? Even his crazy UNCLE Pastor Wright said that Obama would say anything to win 'cause he's a politician.
Listen, I've studied Obama for months, for many hours and I know why I am certain that Obama is at the very least Pro-Palestine and anti-Israel, and at the most: Hates Jews with a passion and has bad plans.
It doesn't matter what I say to you, and I don't mind. See, you believe Obama tells the truth and that he doesn't lie, that must feel...really safe and nice.
But it doesn't make it so.
CC7:58PMMay 13th 2008
please don't make this sound as if this is a one sided issue against obama or blacks -- this happens on both sides of the fence... and it happens to white people too ....call it like it is - obama has already gotten more than his share of free rides --- because of being black. it is what it is.... how and why does that happen ??? the game is for all to play- open to all but play by the rules =-- on even ground...using the race card --- is uneven ground..and if you have to use it -- you shouldnt be in the race....

Michelle Obama’s Writings Display Disturbing Racism
Americans must ask: ‘Do we really want this woman in the White House’?
By Pat Shannan
Just what kind of “change” is Barack Obama offering and just how much influence has his wife, Michelle had over him in their married life the past two decades? It appears that Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama does not look into a crowd of Obama supporters and see Americans. She sees black people and white people, eternally conflicted with one another.
In her senior thesis at Princeton University, Michelle LaVaughn, the future wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, stated that America was a nation founded on “crime and hatred.” Moreover, she stated that whites in America were “ineradicably racist.”
The 1985 thesis, entitled Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community, was written under her maiden name, Michelle LaVaughn. Michelle Obama writes that the path she chose by attending Princeton would likely lead to her “further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society, never becoming a full participant.”
Not only does she see separate black and white societies in America, but emphatically elevates black over white in her world. As first lady, would she insist the White House be painted black? That’s been a standard joke in this venue since the civil rights movement of the 1960s, but this next ominous quote from her thesis suggests that she would in fact urge her husband toward just such an extreme position.
“There was no doubt in my mind that as a member of the black community, I am obligated to this community and will utilize all of my present and future resources to benefit the black community first and foremost.”
She seems to justify those feelings with what she claims to see on the other side of the issue: “Predominantly white universities like Princeton are socially and academically designed to cater to the needs of the white students, comprising the bulk of their enrollments.”
Michelle added in her thesis that to “whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, [I] will always be black first.” However, it was reported by a fellow black classmate, “if those ‘whites at Princeton ‘ really saw Michelle as one who always would ‘be black first,’ it seems that she gave them that impression.”
Michelle Obama’s poll of black alumni concludes that other black former students at Princeton do not share her obsession with blackness. But rather than celebrate, she is horrified that black alumni identify with our common American culture more than they value the color of their skins.
“I hoped that these findings would help me conclude that despite the high degree of identification with whites as a result of the educational and occupational path that black Princeton alumni follow, the alumni would still maintain a certain level of identification with the black community. However, these findings do not support this possibility,” she wrote.
Most black alumni ignored her racist questionnaire. Only 89 students responded, out of 400 who were asked for input.
The thesis provides a trove of Mrs. Obama’s thoughts and world view seen through a race-based prism. For a potential first lady, this is a very divisive view that would do untold damage to race relations in this country in a Barack Hussein Obama administration.
During this presidential election year in which the term “transparency” has been frequently bandied about, candidates have buried a number of potentially revealing documents and papers. In Hillary Rodham Clinton’s case, there’s been a clamoring for tax records, White House memos and other material the candidate’s team has chosen to keep from release.
The 96-page, 1985 Princeton thesis, restricted from release by the school’s Mudd Library, has also been the subject of recent scrutiny. Commentator Jonah Goldberg remarked on National Review Online, “A
reader in the know informs me that Michelle Obama’s thesis is unavailable until Nov. 5, 2008, at the Princeton library. I wonder why.”
“Why a restricted thesis?” asked Pastor Louis Lapides on his website,
Thinking Outside the Blog. “Is the concern based on what’s in the thesis? Will Michelle Obama appear to be too black for white America or not black enough for black America?”
Will an Obama administration really offer constructive “change” or just an intellectually refined racism?

WTF are these comment??
In my views Obama is speaking to America on the other side, from a distance pleading for change. I say from a distance because this country is definetly ready for a african american president. Also the distance comes because he is looking to take the country into a different direction with different views and different policies. Im proud that he is running!

THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE!
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA STILL HAS NOT EXPLAINED WHY HE STUCK WITH WRIGHT FOR 20 YEARS --- KNOWING HE WAS A RADICAL ANTI-AMERICAN, ANTI-WHITE, ANTI-JEWISH MAN WHO SPEWED HATRED IN A CHURCH OF GOD! HE HAS NOT EXPLAINED WHY HE LIED ABOUT WHAT HE HAD (OR HAD NOT) HEARD WRIGHT SAY. HE CONSTANTLY LIES UNTIL HE GETS CAUGHT.
REPRESENTATIVES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE "VOICES OF THE PEOPLE" IN ALL STATES. IF OUR ELECTED REPS DON'T SPEAK FOR US --- WE NEED TO VOTE THEM OUT IN NOVEMBER (OR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE)! WE NEED TERM LIMITS!
OBAMA HAS BASED HIS ENTIRE CAMPAIGN ON LIES. WE HAVE 50 STATES --- NOT 48 --- COUNT THEIR VOTES!
OBAMA'S TIES TO ANTI-AMERICANS AND TERRORISTS WILL NOT GO AWAY.
HE DENOUNCED PASTOR WRIGHT "AFTER" HIS POLL NUMBERS DROPPED. HE SUPPORTED WRIGHT FOR 20 YEARS. SAT IN CHURCH WITH HIS CHILDREN, LISTENING TO SPEWS OF HATRED AND "GOD DAMN AMERICA".
I'M A SMALL-TOWN AMERICAN WHO IS NOT BITTER BUT I DO BELIEVE IN GOD.
OBAMA CANNOT BE TRUSTED.
STOP THE DRAMA --- NO OBAMA!
HILLARY OR McCAIN 2008!
VOTE FOR COUNTRY --- NOT PARTY!

Personal ambitions? Smart enough to work for any law firm, hunble enough to work for a small firm dealing with low income housing. So what is wrong with this picture? Maybe it is time for the USA to turn the corner and move in a different direction. Does that sound like it is a bad idea?
Hillary Clinton worked for underpriviledged children instead of the big name law firms.
