Racism Stings Obama Campaigners
May 13th 2008 9:31PM
Filed Under:eBarack Obama, Featured Stories, 2008 President, Race

The Obama campaign doesn't talk about it much, but will admit when pressed that they started this process knowing that there was a small, but not insignificant, segment of the population that just will not vote for an African-American.
Running just below the surface in the campaign and in the media, is the undercurrent of racism still to be found in pockets around the country - rural, urban and suburban. While Senator Obama's message is inclusive and pan-racial, the workers on the ground have felt the sting that the campaign itself does not wish to highlight and the media has mostly ignored.
The Washington Post today has some harsh stories of field workers, phone bankers and surrogates having doors slammed in their faces, being called the most derogatory of racial terms and physically threatened.
Victoria Switzer, a retired social studies teacher, was on phone-bank duty one night during the Pennsylvania primary campaign. One night was all she could take: "It wasn't pretty." She made 60 calls to prospective voters in Susquehanna County, her home county, which is 98 percent white. The responses were dispiriting. One caller, Switzer remembers, said he couldn't possibly vote for Obama and concluded: "Hang that darky from a tree!"
Documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy, the daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, said she, too, came across "a lot of racism" when campaigning for Obama in Pennsylvania. One Pittsburgh union organizer told her he would not vote for Obama because he is black, and a white voter, she said, offered this frank reason for not backing Obama: "White people look out for white people, and black people look out for black people."
The Obama campaign responded to questions about racial issues by saying, "After campaigning for 15 months in nearly all 50 states, Barack Obama and our entire campaign have been nothing but impressed and encouraged by the core decency, kindness, and generosity of Americans from all walks of life. The last year has only reinforced Senator Obama's view that this country is not as divided as our politics suggest."
But that doesn't do too much for the spirit of some supporters not even old enough to vote yet themselves and not used to the epithets thown their way like their parents and grandparents experienced.
Campaign field work can be an exercise in confronting the fears, anxieties and prejudices of voters. Veterans of the civil rights movement know what this feels like, as do those who have been involved in battles over busing, immigration or abortion. But through the Obama campaign, some young people are having their first experience joining a cause and meeting cruel reaction.
On Election Day in Kokomo, a group of black high school students were holding up Obama signs along U.S. 31, a major thoroughfare. As drivers cruised by, a number of them rolled down their windows and yelled out a common racial slur for African Americans, according to Obama campaign staffers.
The media has been very quiet about the campaign headquarters that have been vandalized and defaced by racist grafitti. The campaign honchos would like to keep it that way. After a recent break-in at a campaign office in Vincennes, IN, volunteer Ray McCormick took some pictures of the damage. When he asked the campaign about distributing his pictures to the press, he was asked not to make a big deal of it. McCormick did as they asked, but told the WaPo, "The pictures represent what we are breaking through and overcoming".

Look who's playing the race card! Rev. wright preacher for 20 yrs. and personal friend of Mr. Obama preached to Obama for twenty years so who's the racist?
Katherine8:44PMMay 13th 2008
OH, I'm not surprised at all. The media has been IGNORING Americans for MONTHS and shoving Obama down our throats for MONTHS!! No one has been LISTENING to people who have been offended and the MSM has been FORCING Obama on people. People seem to be getting angry.
There is a racial double standard in this country, hell some people even think black people cannot be racist.
White people are reacting to Obama and his supporters and his judgement and his history. Don't you know that people who do not want Obama are called racist and filled with hatred everyday--why on EARTH would they vote for him? Why on EARTH would they vote for a guy who pulled the race card, and twisted the media, calling on press conferences to manipulate Bill and Hillary Clinton into looking like racists? THE CLINTON'S!!!??? WTF.
Ok, let's talk about race.
I'm White.
Tell me why I, as a white woman would, ever in my wildrest dreams vote for Obama after he went to Trinity Church of Chicago led by Pastor Wright who taught black liberation theology by James Cone? It's a theory that states that they should only pray to a Black God and if any God loves White people, then it should be killed. That's some INSANELY RACIST SH*T. It's not just a separatist church that is committed to Africa--it's FREAKIN' RACIST. ONLY supporting black leaders, only supporting black causes....etc? Obama has only donated to black causes, etc--fine...but let's get REAL NOW.
No White man or woman could be a candidate going to a place like THAT for 20 years with a chosen UNCLE spiritual mentor who is close to Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan and Father Pfleger and....OMG...are you kidding? Farrakhan said that whites are blue eyed devils, that whites are potential humans--they just haven't evolved yet--that America needs to be burned down--that Judaism is a gutter religion...Hitler was a great man. Rev. Meeks runs around calling black leaders who work with whites house NI@@ERS and whites in political office are slave master's. FORGET what the HELL l Sharpton has done to white people, particularly white men, and FORGET all the white hating, America hating, Jew hating New Black Panther Party have said! Even without THAT, it's still too much.
And Obama talked ALL that trash about rural small town America (white people), and said his (racist) grandma was a "typical white person." Puhleeze.
Obama is connected to Hamas all over the place and million other horror stories for months on end, and he is surrounded by not only America haters but he is very close to American TERRORISTS who BOMBED the Pentagon, and US Capitol, and they gloat about it, and people DIED.
Bill Ayers stomps on the American Flag, Wright says GD America US of KKK A, the gov. gave Blacks AIDS, Italians look down their garlic noses, Natalee Hollaway was just a white girl that gave it up, (meanwhile--she is probably DEAD) and then he celebrated 9/11 saying the chickens have come home to roost? WHEN I LIVE IN NYC AND KNOW PEOPLE WHO FU*KING DIED!!!
Chickens coming home to roost, like Malcolm X has said--the same guy who Obama also quotes, and the same guy who is all over Bill Ayer's office door? Michelle Obama saying America was ignorant, and downright mean? And for the first time in her life she is proud of her (OUR) country, and Obama refuses the flag. He also VOTES against protecting our flag from descretation during protest. It's TOO dam* much!!!
Obama has racist SH*T quotes about white people in his books, calling for black nationalism even if it hurts well-meaning whites. No Thanks!
I mean, WHITE PEOPLE have to be CRAZY to vote for a guy who is SATURATED in RACISTS and ANTI-AMERICANS.

Reverse the races. C'MON. We wouldn't even BE HERE if Obama was white!!!! NO white man or white woman could EVER get this far going to a black supremacy church of hate and all this NOISE. C'mon.....!!!

Aaron: It does have something to do with being Black or you wouldn't have said that. Race is too important in the U.S. You are not that versed on the issues or you would see similarities in Clinton and Obama's philosophies. Clinton is just a liar. And if we only elected people with SO much experience...none of us would have jobs.
Maggie: You are racist. How do you decide WHO will run for president. You know nothing about Colin Powell as you know nothing of Barack Obama. I am sick and tired of people pretending to love everybody and treat everyone as brothers... when inside you hate anyone who is different for you. You only grow better when you face truth...ABOUT YOURSELF!!!
Barbar: I guess you really believ that Hillary was under sniper fire in Bosnia...even after seeing the video. Would you like to buy a bridge in Brooklyn?
Terry8:56PMMay 13th 2008
I understand the complaints regarding possible racism but what puzzles me is the fact that the media has ignored the racism exhibited by blacks in their support of Obama. The media makes a big deal of the fact that Hillary gets 60% or 65% of the white vote yet they say nothing about the fact that Obama is getting 90% of the black vote. How is it that one is considered racism yet the other isn't?
kg8:57PMMay 13th 2008
When a black "leader" can effectively clean-up the HUGE problems in the black community, THEN we might have a valid black candidate for President. Until then.... forget about it.
Barack Hussein Obama would like to purge the prisons of non-violent BLACK drug dealers and change the sentencing laws for same. Does anybody really believe that'll help the issues in the black communities? HA! More indiscriminate breeding, drug wars and drive-by shootings...as if there isn't enough of THAT going on already.
Katherine9:00PMMay 13th 2008
*flag desecration***
--Wait a second...Obama gets 85%--93-94% etc black vote, RIGHT?
Then there is a vote in West Virginia, and it's largely white, so what? Where's the difference? Voting FOR someone who is black or voting FOR someone who is white??
Are BOTH racist? MAYBE! Maybe it is, but no one EVER FREAKING called it racism BEFORE--when it was blacks doing it.
UGH. I am so sick of this racial CRAP.
White people, what's the matter with you? Why aren't you voting for the white hater America hater?? Huh?? UMMMMMM.

This is a bigoted site and racist site.

Terry -- where in the heck have you been living? It has ALWAYS been okay for blacks to blindly support someone based on black skin color alone but it's defintely not okay for whites to blindly support someone based on white skin color alone.

OBAMA INTRODUCED RACE WHEN HE WANTED TO WINSOUTH CAROLINA AND ACCUSED BILL CLINTON OF BEING RACIST.
SO NOW HE WON BLACK VOTES, NOW WHAT?
NOW WE FIND OUT HE ATTENDED A RACIST CHURCH FOR 20 YRS

The Prophetess9:10PMMay 13th 2008
It is a shame that in 2008, there are those that are still unenlightened to believe that a Biracial man of both White and African American descent--is a racist. In this day and age of computers and all kind of sophisticated technology--there still exist those that have cave-man mentality that is unable to fathom that Obama is one candidate that is the embodiment of both the heritage of his parents--DNA don't lie even if those are uneducated to the degree that they want to continue to use the old backward thinking process that has determined one drop of black blood erases Obama linkage with his white ancestry. And they feel justified in the comfort of their racism by quoting that Obama has "shady friends" and yet are willing to overlook all the "shady friends" of both Hillary Clintons and John Mccain. But keep in mind--"they are not racist" in the least even if they fail to use the same standard for the other candidates and their long list of shady associates. And they have the audacity to state that they would vote for Mccain----a man that served this country --and yet refused to vote for the GI Bill that gave a lot of protection for soldiers and created a "reformed" GI Bill that reduced a lot of the benefits the first one incorporated--once he started running for the presidency. A man that is on the same page as George W. Bush that wants the war to continue and if indeed the war is allowed to continue, it will not be long before a draft is implemented for the soldiers that are exhausted from doing back to back tour can not physically continue and they must be replaced and if no one volunteers--there will be a draft --coming for YOUR children or grandchildren of drafting age. And if you still want to vote for Mccain if Obama is the nominee---then you also will be voting for an economy that is in a growing recession that he is not interested in providing relief for YOU and just recently acknowledged that there even was a problem for he was echoing the words of the current President that the economy was fine and only recently decided to agree there was and is a problem. And for anyone who wants to vote for Clinton --who they say "we trust her" and yet she lies with a straight face pretty much like the current administration. She insults YOUR intelligence by telling you "anything" that will generate votes and she has a history of legal problems centering around conduct that were questionable and "associates" or shady friends that came into the equation more than on several occassions. Obama is not a perfect man by any stretch of the imagination--and if you honestly disagree with him on his policies that is one thing--but to broadly paint him with a "shady friends" brush and not find the rest of the paint to coat Clinton or Mccain for the same issues that is a so called "concern" is merely trying to disguise your own biases and shortcomings--at least admit it to yourself--life has passed you by and you are still thinking in cave-men terms. It is time to evolve from the elementary assimulation of facts and began to think as a man or woman and put away childish and immature thinking.

It is still hard to believe in this day and age that we still have this type of racial divide. To all the want to be racist.........next time you suck down a piece of chicken think about who plucked, cleaned, and cooked it. At some point in time the products you use daily have touch some BLACK AMERICAN'S hand. Take that to the bank.
Katherine9:16PMMay 13th 2008
Obama's campaign doesn't talk about it much...
HUH? You think I personally forgot when Jesse Jackson Junior said that Obama beating Hillary in Iowa was like OJ Simpson slaughtering a white woman?
NOO!! GD IT. So many PASSES.
Vince9:16PMMay 13th 2008
Blacks voting for Obama is not racism. This is because blacks are minority in the US. If they were majority you can make that argument, here is why - How many times have blacks supported white candidates? How many times have whites supported a black candidate? I am not only white, but I am almost an albino, so tell me if anyone can get any more white than that? THis is time for us to support a candidate irrespective of race. I love America! I love the middle East, I love the world. Americans, should never fall prey to kitchen politics that break us apart! Let's love each other and be nice to one another!

Aw, that's sad.
What's even sadder is that whites are just being forced to realize people like Wright and his followers will only be happy with a strict racial divide. That's sad.
And it's sad that white people are the only race on THE PLANET EARTH who are denied the right to have a racial identity. They are denied the right to be proud of being who they are. The are denied the right to stand and rejoice in the fact that THEY CHANGED THEMSELVES FROM THE INSIDE OUT. Martin Luther King, Jr was a great man. And so was Abraham Lincoln.
White people, during the Civil War, were the ones to stand against the mistreatment of blacks. That war was Brother Against Brother. Whites were killing each other in defense of and in opposition to slavery. WHITE PEOPLE!!!
God forbid that whites seem a little angry when generations later they wake to realize that as good as they try to be, they will always be blamed for the acts of their ancestors.
God forbid that blacks who have never picked a ball of cotton, blacks who were never slaves, blacks who have been given program after program to prop up and benefit them - those blacks will never let whites forget that whites should always hang their heads in shame for sins that are generations old.
Every white person I know, and that's a whole fucking lot, folks, would be glad to stand against the KKK or The Arian Nation or whatever it's called. We would do this because we DON'T believe in racism, because we DO believe in equality for every man, woman and child.
Show me the black who would fight for MY rights.
Reverend Wright???
I'm sick and tired of being blamed for something I didn't do.
White guilt is coming to an end, people. That's what's happening. And we can all thank Rev. Wright for that, and in turn, we can thank Obama. Obama who allows his children to be taught such filth.
Obama who writes in his book "Dreams of My Father":"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so
I was ingratiating myself to whites."
and "I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race."
There are many more quotes like that in his books. How should I think Obama feels about me?
Boomer9:18PMMay 13th 2008
GREAT JOB WEST VIRGINIA...you represent the true America. You showed the media and politicians that just because they say the race is over..they were dead wrong! You "West Virginians" saw in each candidate (good or bad) what many in the rest of this country hadn't seen. Hopefully your keen insight and judgement in character will be an inspiration to the rest of the upcoming states. I'm happy to see there are folks in this country like all your West Virginians, that are looking out for the good old "U.S.A."
Katherine9:20PMMay 13th 2008
If ya got some white friends...they be clappin' like dis ya'll...if ya have some white friends....they'll be votin' like dis ya'll.
I Mean, c'mon, seriously? Pastor Wright using PALE TALK: OMG, isn't he BOMBASTIC?
SOOO Racist.

Obama received a lot of white votes to get where he is now as far as racial, could be, hate monger, yep and it all strted with Rev. Wright. It looks like Obama and Rev Wright have one thing in common and that is their tattoos. A Tattoo is a life statement, look at the Arm Forces, MotorCycle Club members. After Rev. Wright's speech and the media pumping it up every chance they got, Racial or selling $$$$$
