Hold on a Second, Sweetie
May 15th 2008 9:16AM
Filed Under:eDemocrats, Barack Obama, Featured Stories, 2008 President
Ouch. That's no way to address a female news reporter. Even if she's firing out inane, persistent questions during your choreographed visit to a Detroit automaker. So, drum roll please, does this mean that we've finally "peeled the bark off" Barack Obama? Has this stealth misogynist been exposed for the world to see once and for all? I guess it all depends on what the meaning of the word "sweetie" is. Did Obama use it in an affectionate or condescending manner? Or was it simply a repetitive slip of the tongue from a family man who regularly calls his wife and two daughters by the same term?
Yes, of course it was a glib, regrettable way to talk to a fully-grown woman he'd never met before. And whatever his initial motive (or lack thereof), Obama realized such pretty quickly, and apologized yesterday to the WXYZ reporter (seriously, X-Y-Z, as in "pretty darn quick!") via voicemail:
"Hi Peggy. This is Barack Obama. I'm calling to apologize on two fronts. One was you didn't get your question answered and I apologize. I thought that we had set up interviews with all the local stations. I guess we got it with your station but you weren't the reporter that got the interview. And so, I broke my word. I apologize for that and I will make up for it. Second apology is for using the word 'sweetie.' That's a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and I am duly chastened on that front. Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next."
No word on whether NARAL Pro-Choice America will be rescinding yesterday's endorsement over, Oh God, "Sweetie-Gate."
Here's Peggy Agar, the reporter in question, on what she makes of this whole tempest in a teapot, and Obama's apology:
"I've been called worse during interviews."
But any hard feelings?
"...surprised that he actually called me in person and I thought that was nice to follow-up, you know, with that call."
What a sweetie! Oh, right, sorry.

"Hold on a second, Sweetie?" I said it before and I'll say it again. If the super delegates ignore the will of the people and insist on sending a boy to do a woman's or a man's job they will Self Destruct in November, AS USUAL.
Davidg10:39AMMay 15th 2008
Well we are racists if we don't support Obama, so let's just call Obama a misogynist and all his supporters as well.
He calls "all kinds of people" "sweetie"?
Huh?
Oh and from now on all you Obama supporters are misogynists. There is nothing you can say or do to convince me otherwise. You will not vote for Hillary ONLY because she is a woman. None of her other negatives matter to you. It is only because she is a woman. You hate women. You probably beat them. If you are a woman you are a self-hating, probably anorexic, and probably a slut.
Hey this is fun. Anybody want to call me a racist today?
John10:42AMMay 15th 2008
You only wish it were...I cant count on two hands how many times some Woman I worked for called me "hon" or "honey" and even "sweetness" once. So big friggin deal waht an idiotic blog.
John10:44AMMay 15th 2008
No David but I will call you a moron.
Isabella10:54AMMay 15th 2008
The more "Macaca Moments" Barack Obama has, the more his supporters adore him. People with "macaca" for brains stick together, I guess.

Susan Estrich: Bad News for Obama? She is a Harvard Professor of Law and Political Science
Obama has a problem with one of the core groups in the Democratic base. If he has won this nomination, he has won it without them, despite them. The problem is he can’t win the White House that way.
You can talk until you’re blue in the face about the new voters Obama has brought to the process, about the enthusiasm among students and his appeal to independents, but at the end of the day, if you’re a Democrat, you don’t win the White House without winning the votes of white, working-class voters in states like Pennsylvania and Ohio and New Jersey and, yes, West Virginia.
And you can call these people every name in the book, starting with racist, as some Obama supporters are prone to do, but questioning people’s motives generally is not a very effective approach to addressing their doubts or bringing them into the fold. Insults do not turn skeptics into supporters.

I usually use "honey" when I am being patronizing or sarcastic..."sweetie" works tho
TJ10:58AMMay 15th 2008
DOES THAT SURPRISE ANYONE?
OBAMA IS SOME ARROGANT "ELITIST" LITTLE THING. WHAT THE PEOPLE PUSHING OBAMA HAVE NOT TOLD US IS WHERE THEY GONNA PUT HIS WIFE MICHELE. THAT ONE HAS SUCH UNCOUTH MANNERS AND LANGUAGE..I CANT STAND HER.

I guess if your a man it means nothing to you...if it doesn't bother you that a man running for office would call your wife , female children, or fellow employees "sweetie".
I would never call an employee hon or sweetie it's condescending.. at least.. how long have some of these people posting been out of the work force ...
it's not the 50's anymore.
Another issue here was he did not have an answer to her question as well.
Surprise??? No
I am glad David Knowles brought it up ..it should have been brought up.

Obama is so unprofessional...jsut like the doofus who is in the white house now.
shari11:02AMMay 15th 2008
You're surprised that he's a misogynist? He's already shown himself to be a racist and a liar...
and he didn't answer the question, either.
What an idiot.
kimberly7317611:02AMMay 15th 2008
Ok sweetie, get over yourself. I am an accomplished female myself, but also a parent. Yes you may be a reporter, but like any child interupting a conversation you were pasified. Maybe if reporters grew manners they wouldn't have to be "handled" like children. Waaaaaa, go cry somewhere else. You picked your profession, deal with it.
mj11:02AMMay 15th 2008
OH MY GOD YOU PEOPLE AMAZE ME>>>>> COMPLAIN BUT something that MATTERS!!! SWEETIE>>> OH PLEASE
Ceri11:02AMMay 15th 2008
Sounds Sexist to me. Would he have said that to a male reporter? Do we want another male chalvinist in the White House?
Isabella11:03AMMay 15th 2008
Barack Obama's defeat in West Virginia was bad enough.
If John Edwards' name had been left off the ballot, Obama's defeat would have been completely demoralizing.
Gee, was this done on purpose?
Chris11:03AMMay 15th 2008
You have GOT to be kidding. I looked at the video cringing at what the hell he could have possibly said. SWEETIE? I don't think that is at all condescending..it is a nice familar term for a female. If he had said "dude" to a guy, would that have caused outrage? Is there nothing else to pick on that the guy has to apologize for calling a woman sweetie. No wonder we can't get the big issues resolved in this country.
jo jo77811:04AMMay 15th 2008
the sweetie part does not bother me it is the fact that he says change but when asked what he is gonna change he avoids the question
TJ11:04AMMay 15th 2008
Davidg, TALK OF THE MISOGYNISTIC OBAMA SUPPORTERS. WHAT AMAZES ME ARE THE WOMEN WHO ARE WAILING SENSELESSLY AFTER THIS GUY, RATHER THAN SUPPORT THEIR ONE CHANCE TO BE PRESIDENT.... HAVE YOU SEEN OBAMA AND HIS GROUP FROM A DISTANCE, THEY LOOK LIKE THE "DON COLEONS" FROM SICILY. MAFIA. THERE MUST BE A LOT OF ANTI- WOMEN GUYS IN THERE.
TELL ME WHY THESE MEN ARE FLOCKING TO HIM... I DONT THINK THEY LOVE OBAMA , THEY ARE THERE TO STOP A WOMAN.

Well, not only did he condescend to the woman reporter by calling her sweetie, he never did answer the question about how he would help the auto workers keep their jobs, equally important in my mind.
I don't care what you want to call his attitude, I just don't like it. He's rude and insensitive and I don't think we need another President who thinks the American public is only necessary to him in an election year. Feel free to call him back and his press team will be nice to you. lol
