McCain's Disastrous Speech
Jun 4th 2008 8:05AM
Filed Under:eDemocrats, Republicans, John McCain, Featured Stories, Viral Video
The reviews have come streaming in for John McCain's "Don't Forget About Me" speech, and they aren't pretty. It's hard to see how, if McCain continues to bungle these opportunities, he has a chance in the November election. If Ronald Reagan was the "great communicator," then McCain is his party's grating teleprompter reader. But it wasn't just the snide delivery of his rhetorically ham-fisted remarks that emphasized old politics. The Kenner, Louisiana venue itself (I guess Denver's convention center was booked), with that atrocious green poster-board backdrop, the low-ceilinged room full of a few dozen cat-calling, country-club Republicans taunting Barack Obama, well, let's just say it wasn't a "Mission Accomplished" moment. To say that there was stark contrast between the speeches of Obama and McCain is an epic understatement. One man stood on a grand stage, making history. The other signaled that unless he improves his communication skills fast, he'll be history in no time flat.
Here's a sampling of other opinion:
National Review Online
McCain's speech was creaky, ungracious, and unnecessary. I never understand why politicians don't take the opportunity, when so easily presented, to simply be gracious and hold their fire. I couldn't help but think of the astonishing contrast Barack's triumphant speech to a massive and adoring crowd will be. It was not a comparison McCain should have invited.
Andrew Sullivan
Put McCain's speech against Obama's--and this was a wipe-out. Not a victory. A wipe-out. Rhetorically, the are simply not in the same league. And if the contrast tonight between McCain and Obama holds for the rest of the campaign, McCain is facing a defeat of historic proportions.
Rolling Stone
Here's TPM's video wrap-up
Worst. Speech. Ever. Good God, John McCain gives bad podium. It's like watching the out-takes from an Andy Rooney kvetch.
Atrios
"It'll make you look like cottage cheese in a lime jello salad." Always a good look for older gentlemen... The aesthetics of McCain's speech, just mercifully completed before a slightly energized crowd of literally dozens, was awesome in how dreadful it was.
Time
On paper, McCain made a reasonably strong argument tonight. But he didn't do himself any favors with his delivery. His presentation wasn't horrible, for him. But McCain is an awkward speaker at best; he's far better interacting with voters in a town hall or with reporters on the back of his campaign bus. He has none of Obama's formal oratorical skills--a contrast that will become only more glaring as the campaign progresses.
Here's the speech, for your perusal.

I'll take poor rhetoric rather than Barak Hussein Obama ANYDAY. He is not to be trusted and too far left to be voted in this November.

These left wing bloggers are ammusing at best. Obama spent half of his usual staff written "change" speech bitching about McCain and Hillary did not even concede last night. How much more pathetically bias can these bloggers be? Do you not realize how much credibility you lose when day after day you show your pathetic bias towards Obama. In your blind orgasmic attempt to crown Obama your Messiah, you forget to mention that Hillary won the popular vote and now has 17 million pissed off voters that will vote for McCain. When are you going to report on that Obamaknowles?

Looks like Michele Obama learned a WHOLE BUNCH from Rev. Wright!

Who knew?
The only critieria for being President of the United States was speaking ability or better yet good teleprompter reader or good speech written by someone else memorizer.
What did "The Daily Snark" report today? What are Knowless' other usual sources "My DD's" and "Pink Pajamas"?
He gives "bad podium" from Rolling Stone?
"atrocious" green backdrop?
I don't really understand Sullivan, it appears he's ready to throw his ideals by the wayside when he sees a big black c
andidate.

Maybe AMcCain can take speach lessons. I'm sure he can accomplish this way sooner than Obama can replace his first lady wanna be.

You HATEFUL ultra-liberal and ignorant pundits !
Your stupidity never ceases to amaze me. You are so hateful and blatantly bias toward Obama....you will find yourselves with ROTTEN egg on your faces in November when McCain is in the White House. Neither Blue collar nor White collar America will support Obama...only ignorant America haters, those ignorant in International/ geo-political relations and those seeking government handouts will support Obama in November and they are far from a sufficient number to send him to the White House in any capacity other than to attend the inaugural celebration for President McCain. Please....leave America...go to a mose friendly environment for hatemongers and America haters like yourselves ....maybe China, North Korea or better yet...IRAN or Syria ! John McCain is a hearo and is right on target and WILL be elected in November ! SC...Washington DC

STAY TUNED. JOHN MCCAIN IS AN UNGRACIOUS PERSON WITH A NASTY MEAN STREAK---IT IS GOING TO SHOW VERY PAINFULLY DURING THIS CAMPAIGN. TOO BAD--HE DOES HAVE SOME GOOD IDEAS. BASICALLY THOUGH, HE IS TOO OLD AND TOO ROOTED IN THE PAST AND TOO CLOSE TO THE MOST INEPT PRESIDENT IN OUR HISTORY.
mikki10:37AMJun 4th 2008
You guys have a difficult time being totally honest with yourselves. Obama is the best choice for administering an antidote to the devastation that we now call America. It is poetic justice to see a black man show dominance over the abilities of a white one right here at home---in racist, oppressive America. OBAMA '08!!!!!!!!!
mary melcher10:38AMJun 4th 2008
MCCAIN IS AN UNGRACIOUS PERSON WITH A MEAN AND NASTY TEMPER. THIS WILL SHOW UP IN THE COMING MONTHS AS THE STRESS OF THE CAMPAIGN WEIGHS ON THE CANDIDATES AND IN THE END-IT WILL DEFEAT MCCAIN.
mary melcher10:43AMJun 4th 2008
SOME POSTERS MISS THE POINT--IF IN FACT MCCAIN IS YOUR MAN, THEN YOU NEED TO HOPE HE LEARNS QUICKLY TO BE GRACIOUS, TO DROP THE SNIDE SMART ALECK STUFF (AND NO BUSH SNEERING PLEASE). IF HE DOES NOT, THE CONTRAST WITH OBAMA WILL BE SO GREAT IT WILL COST HIM VOTES. HE IS AWFULLY CLOSE TO THE MOST INEPT AND INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT IN OUR HISTORY, WHICH IS A BIG CROSS TO BEAR SO HE BETTER BRUSH UP ON HIS PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS OF HIMSELF AND HIS IDEAS.
TJ10:43AMJun 4th 2008

WOW I hear a LOT of desperation in these Republican blogs. It is obvious they will throw all the mud within reach for the next 5 months. Can't they see that the RNC threw McCain under the bus for 08. Romney is their golden child, he will be nominee in 2012. Democrats could run Homer Simpson in 08 and win.

Do we elect a man based on his delivery of speeches? Wow, that stinks if we do. We should elect a man based on issues and proven experiences. So what if Barack Obama can give a good speech if it is full of bombastic oratory and empty promises? Do not forget that Obama is not squeaky clean. The educated person should read his two books thoroughly and let some of his sayings sink in, for example in Audacity of Hope he has said ,If the political winds start to shift in an ugly direction, I will stand with the Muslims. Similar anti white remarks can be found in Dreams of My Father. Does it take a frying pan upside your head to figure out where he is coming from? Be afraid, be verrrry afraid.

Obama supporters. How do you like this speech....
Michelle Obama spoke at the Women’s Event, but referenced Bill Clinton in her rant — his presence at the conference was the impetus for her raving, it seems.
For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on “whitey”, and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that’s when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who’s seen this.
