Hagel: I'd Accept Obama Cabinet Post
Jun 28th 2008 3:15PM
Filed Under:eEndorsements, Republicans, Barack Obama, John McCain, Breaking News, 2008 President
Republican Chuck Hagel has made no secret of his affection for Barack Obama, but in an interview today on Bloomberg TV the Nebraska senator goes even further. Hagel, always a thorn in the side of the GOP, says he would consider serving in a Cabinet under a President Obama. Hagel, who sits on the Foreign Relations Committee, could be a candidate for Defense Secretary.Hagel broke with his party over the war in Iraq, which he called a "catastrophic mistake." He voted with Democrats to withdraw troops and against President Bush's troop buildup in Iraq last year.Hagel admits he doesn't agree with Obama on every issue, he simply disagrees with McCain more often. Despite leaning towards the Democrat this time around, Hagel says he has no plans to abandon the Republican Party.
Hagel criticized McCain for saying that Obama, the Democrats' likely presidential nominee, misunderstands the war in Iraq and was wrong to oppose the troop buildup. Hagel called McCain's criticism a "superfluous, gratuitous political comment."

Hagel sounds like he is working every angle to get a job. "Pick me." "Pick me." The same holds true for a few Democratic supporters of Obama. Ulterior motives, no doubt. Focus on self instead of the American ciizens & country is appearing to be the norm. We NEED a president who is truly FOR the people. Obama is not it.

Joyce, I agree with you all the way. We'd probably lose this country with Obama. Whether he's a good speaker or not, he still lacks the most important things we need in our next President, like honesty, experience, knowledge, and love for the people of our nation.

Reading these comments is sad. What do you think has happened people? The current administration has about put us in hades, with their policies. He lacks the most imports things you need? Oh please, you can't be that stupid. You should hope for a President that respects the Constitution. Something most repubs, do not... Didn't you hear what your President said about it? Where have you people been, for the last 7 1/2 years? Gee...

What a sad bunch of people you all are. I thank God that I'm nowhere near you or your wonderful country. God save America, let alone bless her!

I am a republican that is disappointed in our current leadership, the direction of this campaign and the party in general. We have failed miserably and to ignore that is indeed a mistake. We must hold our party to a higher standard. I think that although we might be hurt further this fall, it will force the change that is needed within to once again allow us to lead this nation appropiately. I don't think of Hagel as a traitor or disloyal, all of our first loyalties should be to our country.

Republican Chuck Hagel has made no secret of his affection for Barack Obama. Neither has Larry S. That doesn't make it right.
Illinois Dem7:05PMJun 28th 2008
Hagel you are scum just like Obama.
I cannot believe anyone would want to associate their reputation with Obama.
Read Boston Globe and No Quarter - Obama's shocking betrayal of thousands of Chicago residents of his friends housing developments. Slumlords!!!!!

What a hoot conservatives are. You all have no problem with Joe Liebermann traipsing around the country with McCain. Aside from his stance on Iraq, Liebermann has one of the most liberal voting records in the Senate. Chuck Hagel is my new hero.
RIChris7:19PMJun 28th 2008
It's amazing the number of men who have such affection for Barack Obama. A little disconcerting.

Both Hegel and Obama are very smart. Dumb people do not like smart people. Great people are always attacked by those with small minds, e.g., Christ was crucified. Judging by the comments here, my guess is that the typical neocon thinks that everyone is as smart as they are. Because their motives were selfish, they brought what was a great country to the brink of collapse. "Stupid is as stupid does" and the ironic (sick) aspect of it all is that they must think that in order to win they have to do more of the same. They talk about Americans being safe, but that is only true if Americans do not leave America, if they do they are in constant danger. Used to be that Americans were loved by the rest of the world,
Now we are hated by the rest of the world. What is hate? I never knew what hatred was until one day I accidently listened to Rush Limbaugh, and for the first time in my adult life I came to know hatred. The feeling subsided over time until I began reading this blog, and I have to admit I now have that feeling of hatred not only for Rush, but the entire neocon movement. They are evil, liars, and are the real threat to our national security

Really pathetic- He must as well change his R to D, because no one wants a begger. Please, Hagel, I thought you had more class than this, stop begging, you began to sound like Oreilly. Obama is not the Creator, child- stop sipping the koolaid already, you've had enough!!
VIV9:51PMJun 28th 2008
SMART? COME ON WHO IS THE DUMB ONE.ALL OBAMA IS A TYPICAL CON MAN AND NOT A VERY GOOD ONE. HE WOULD BE NO BETTER THEN BUSH AS A PRESIDENT. AND WHO IS THIS HAGEL? WHAT A LAUGH HE IS. JUMP ON THE BAND WAGON AND LOSE BIG TIME.!!! THIS ELECTION IS REALLY GETTING MORE STUPID BY THE MINUTE! I WONDER WHAT THE OTHER COUNTRIES THINK. I BET THEY ARE HAVING A GOOD LAUGH AND SHAKING THIER HEADS.

WHERE IS MY COMMENT.
Ella10:38PMJun 28th 2008
Have we had the election yet, I thought the presidential election is suppose to be in November of this year, so what cabient is Hagel talking about? This country is in bad condition now, and it will be in worst condition if Obama become president.
Pete11:16PMJun 28th 2008
I just love some of the comments here.
One can take an innocuous quote of Hagel's like, "I simply disagree with McCain more often than when I disagree with Obama," and people here twist it into some sort of perverse affection for the Illinois Senator.
Viv,
The comments have been loading slowly lately; just refresh after a couple of minutes to see your comment. I see two by you so I don't think one of yours is missing.
In regards to what other countries think of what is going on here, the vast majority of the developed, civilized world is looking forward to working with Obama as president. The only people who outright loathe Obama are generally the highly conservative base of the Republican party and people who were putting all their chits on Senator Clinton. Most everyone else thinks he is at least tolerable.

Hagel seems to have over-looked something--something the Democrats have hidden under the rug. Obama can never be sworn in as president because--UNDER APPLICABLE LAW AS IN EFFECT AT THE TIME OBAMA WAS BORN--HE'S NOT CONSTITUTIONALLY ELIGIBLE TO BECOME PRESIDENT. Despite the fact that Obama was born in the US and had one parent with US citizenship, for him to have become a citizen upon his birth, that parent had be at least 19 at the time of his birth (that is, under the relevant provision of the controlling law, had to have lived in the US for at least 5 years after turning 14)-and his sole American parent was only 18 at the time of Obama’s birth. (When Obama was born, babies did not become US citizens just because they were born in the US, or just because one parent was an American.) By law, Obama is not a natural born citizen of the US. (This may sound nuts to some, but ask a lawyer to read the controlling Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, a/k/a the McCarren-Walter Act, as in effect in 1961.)

We, DEMOCRATES welcome CHUCK THE "SMART MAN" HAGEL!
Only a DUMMY would want to stay in IRAQ for 100 years. I am a mother who just had a son to return from IRAQ a month ago and he does not ever want to go back for nothing even though he loved the IRAQ PEOPLE! This war has not only destroyed LIFE, LIBERTY, AND JUSTICE, it has also destroyed happy homes, marriages, and mentalities! WHAT ARE YOU WAR LOVERS THINKING ABOUT? Killing and stealing the life of people who where already oppressed under the rule of THE MAD MAN SADDAM HUSSEIN?
These WARS have been going on since BIBLICAL TIMES, so
what can we do about them? ABSOLUTELY NOTING! What we need to concentrate on is taking care of this land we stole from the Native American's, and it's uneducated, homeless, poor, and hungry! Those people where happy with it's dictatorship, it is time that we as suppose to be Americans show just unhappy we are! Gas more than $4.00 a Gal, Milk almost $6.00 a
Gal, Bread almost $3.00 a loaf, what in the hell are you people thinking about.
JUDY fERGUSON6:01AMJun 29th 2008
WE, NEED TO GET OUT OF EVERY ONE ELSE'S BUSINESS, AND TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN! We have dictators of Countries,
but for some reason we feel we need to dictate to the entire WORLD! It takes a lot of nerve to go and educate people who do not want to be educated and will kill themselves for a dictator, and we will not educate our own! I will be glad when the mexicans take over maybe self rightousness will change?
