NRA, Disney Duel Over Florida Gun Law
What part of the 2nd Amendment does Mickey Mouse not understand? That's the question the NRA wants answered in light of the decision made by Walt Disney World to prohibit their employees from keeping fire arms in their cars while they work. This decision comes in spite of a new state law--The Preservation and Protection of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms in Motor Vehicles Act of 2008--that went into affect in Florida on Tuesday allowing state residents to do just that. Disney contends that its property is exempt from the law due to an exception for companies who have a federal permit for explosives. Disney has that permit because they put on fireworks displays frequently. Republican state Senator Durell Peaden thinks Disney is hiding behind a technicality. "I intended it to exempt places like defense plants, Air Force bases, things like that," he said, adding, "but not Disney. Not at all."
When the news of Disney's defiance hit NRA headquarters, their PR department came out with guns blazing. They quickly issued a memo to members titled, "Disney Thumbing Nose at the New Florida Gun Law." The memo accused Disney of being a "prime offender when it comes to firing employees for exercising Second Amendment rights." Disney also supports a court challenge to the new law.
In case you were wondering, SeaWorld supports the law.
The NRA will need all their ammo, because in addition to their battle with Disney the group also has plans for a pitched legal battle against the city of San Francisco and also plans to spend $40 million on the Presidential election.

Edwin -
Maybe you should have waited for the appelate process to conclude. You should believe more in your right to feed yourself and family by maintaining employment than you do in your right to carry a gun.
Maybe going hungry for a while will sharpen you decision making skills. Please don't shoot me.

Covey -
Actually, she is now on hubby #3, so I doubt we are all wrong.
Guns ARE dangerous because people ARE idiots. Sounds like you may be proof of that. I think we may be reading about you in the next edition of the Darwin Awards. Good luck!
So what is it, exactly, that makes me a fag, Covey? That I thought Edwin could have used a little more intelligence common sense in this particular career move? When he starts to get hungry, I imagine Edwin will wish he didn't take his finger off his pawn yet.
Seriously, since it is a CONCEALED weapon, how did Disney even know about it except that Edwin told someone so he COULD get fired so he COULD sue so he COULD make a little history and a lot of money.
All I suggested was that he exercise a little more caution and prudence so that he (or his family) wouldn't go hungry. This would actually keep him from falling prey to the liberal carousel of entitlement programs you mistakenly think I support. Once he gets on that ride, the Supreme Court had better go his way or he may never get off that ride. Poor little Edwin Jr didn't ask for that, did he? I think he would rather accidentally shoot himself, given a choice.
And didn't I indicate that there was a good chance that Disney would lose? Sure I did. I just believe that, in some cases, one constitutional right takes precedent over another. No matter how the court decides, this will be one of those cases.
As for being a pussy, I suppose I am what I eat. I can live with that.
Thank a Teacher8:25AMJul 5th 2008
Judging from his reply, Covey probably dropped out of high school. Covey- guns are used by people- people misuse guns- innocent people are hurt by their own weapon every day, more often than by others in crimes. Where have you been hiding? It is a weapon, not a trophy, not a toy. Look up the word.
Splash, your points are well put. Having worked for a PD in Florida, the gun law for having a weapon in your vehicle require that there be 2 locked stages. A locked box under the seat, or a locked glove box is only one stage. How would anyone know what is in someone's locked glove box unless someone talked about it? And who is going to break into a vehicle that has a weapon in it but some of the low lifes we all try to avoid. He may be telling another castmember, but he tells 2 friends... and so on. If Edwin had just kept his secret, secret, he would still have a job.

Finally, a voice of reason. If wanting to keep my kids from becoming a statistic makes me a fag, then bring on the men.

Covey,
Go back to school, learn a little english before you come to do battle in a forum such as this.

Splash, you are a bleeding heart lib. Lol "don't shoot me" What a Fag! Hey I dont see why any one needs to bring there fire arm to work with them, but it's a free country...they have that right. The People who own guns legally are not the ones you need to worry about. It's the low lives, the pimps, crack dealers, the scum of the earth that get there weapons illegaly and intend to use them as such that you need to worry about. So please "splash" Dont push your B/S about guns being dangerous and all that, hey maybe if you were not such a pussy there wouldnt be any hubby #2....haha.

I wonder if you would respect property owner rights if the same company banned pro abortion bumper stickers from there parking lot . the contents of a privatly owned vehicle is not the buisness of the employer when that content is protected by law

As much as I would love to see Mickey Mouse and all his friends packing heat, It is Disney's property, business and rules. The activist judge was overstepped his responsibility of interpreting the constitution and was legislating from the bench.
Disney is simply keeping the process going to up the appellate food chain until the more reasonable constructionist on the Supreme Court get ahold of the case.
If the SC upholds, and there is a good chance they will, then Disney will have to comply. Until then, they have the same right as any US corporation/individual (and some foriegn entities) to challenge and appeal the debacles, um, I mean decisions of the lower courts.
The question is, is Disney's right to guard itself against a violent incident (which would surely result in a major lawsuit) trumped by the 2nd amendment. I know that when I sued my ex wife to remove hubby #2s guns from the house on the premise that we had agreed (while we were married) that guns in the house were dangerous to the well being of our children, I lost to hubby #2's 2nd amendment rights.
This leads me to believe that Disney will ultimately lose, but if I had had Disney's money (and I wish I had) I would have spent it all to take my children's safety to the Supreme Court. If Disney win, I will have all the precedent I need to to get those guns far away from my precious children. I believe my right to protect my children (and Disney's right to protect their employees and patrons) is superior to the right of Bubba to brag that he has a gun in his pick up glove box.
But, now we will find out, because Disney can afford it. Its a real shame that I couldn't and a real giveaway that our legal system is only as effective as its litigants are rich.
