Obama Landslide Gathering

Although Senator Barack Obama has been maintaining a small, single-digit lead in national polls, there are signs from a number of recent studies that an Obamavalanche could bury John McCain in November.

Perhaps most encouragingly, a recent Pew study shows that support for John McCain is soft, with just 14% supporting the GOP Senator strongly, compared to 28% for Barack Obama.

The same study shows that the number of Hillary Clinton supporters who say they'll vote for McCain has shrunk to 17%. Interestingly, the number of voters who mistakenly think John McCain is pro-choice is also 17%. 56% of women don't know McCain's position on abortion. Additionally, according to Gallup, Obama has pulled even with McCain among voters with less formal education.

The conclusions that I draw from this are that Obama's support is more stable, and McCain's already soft support has nowhere to go but down.

Obama already leads McCain on most key issues, and is nipping at his heels on Iraq. The more people find out about McCain's stands on the issues, the less likely they are to vote for him.

Obama's trip to the Middle East could end up being the pebble that breaks the dam. If he performs well there, and returns with a consistent, credible message, he could pull ahead of McCain on that issue.

Aside from the numbers, however, there is a growing sense that McCain is the candidate of the past, and if there's anything voters are saying, it's that they don't want more of the same.
