McCain Learning the Internets

Sen. John McCain, who has come under some pretty heavy fire of a different sort of late for his acknowledgment that he doesn't know too much about using the Internet, is sitting himself down to learn a little bit more about the World Wide Web.

Politico today highlights an article run in the New York Times over the weekend, in which the Arizona senator said he has relied on his wife and aides to get him online to read newspapers (though he prefers reading those the old-fashioned way) and political Web sites and blogs.

"They go on for me," he told the Times. "I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don't expect to be a great communicator, I don't expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need."

Asked which blogs he read, he said: "Brooke and Mark show me Drudge, obviously. Everybody watches, for better or for worse, Drudge. Sometimes I look at Politico. Sometimes RealPolitics."

I guess he forgot to mention one because Cindy McCain then looked up from her own BlackBerry, and chastised her husband. "Meghan's blog!" she said, reminding him of their daughter's blog on his campaign Web site. "Meghan's blog," he said sheepishly.

McCain doesn't use a BlackBerry (honestly, I don't blame him - those things can suck the life out of you, and he has bigger things to focus on), though he regularly reads messages on those of his aides. "I don't e-mail, I've never felt the particular need to e-mail."

"I read e-mails all the time, but the communications that I have with my friends and staff are oral and done with my cell phone. I have the luxury of being in contact with them literally all the time. We now have a phone on the plane that is usable on the plane, so I just never really felt a need to do it. But I do - could I just say, really - I understand the impact of blogs on American politics today and political campaigns. I understand that. And I understand that something appears on one blog, can ricochet all around and get into the evening news, the front page of The New York Times. So, I do pay attention to the blogs. And I am not in any way unappreciative of the impact that they have on entire campaigns and world opinion. "

I have to say, even though my 89-year-old grandmother has managed to learn how to use her own computer and get on the Internet (although I do get phone calls from her once in a while when the 'Internet won't work', and she has more free time on her hands than McCain, I'm sure), and many were quick to criticize McCain for now being more tech savvy, I would much rather have a potential president be focused on learning the intricacies of the most important issues facing this nation, meeting with people and hearing their concerns, and actually getting things done. (By the way, AP also has a piece today on whether McCain is "too old" for the White House.)

Just think about it: How much less work do we all get done when we have multiple e-mail account windows open on our computer?

Anyway, the extent of the criticism he took on this issue is just stupid. It doesn't take an Internet expert to end wars or get the country out of a recession.
