New Yorker, I Got Your Satire Right Here
David Knowles reported earlier that the Obama campaign was not amused by The New Yorker's satirical cover, saying: The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree. The McCain campaign thought so, too. I say, grow a pair!

The New Yorker is known for its edgy, satirical covers. In fact, I don't think this one went far enough. Why not have Hillary Clinton, dressed in a French maid outfit, dusting the china? Why aren't the Obamas flanked by Nation of Islam bodyguards? And I knew they were wussing out when they didn't put Obama in Eldridge Cleaver pants and a giant, purple fedora to match the Soul Plane parked out back as a replacement for Air Force One.
It's not like this is the first time they have run one of these. You don't remember the cover where they satirized Americans' views of Japanese people while they were being rounded up into internment camps? Courageous stuff.

As luck would have it, I have a friend over at The New Yorker, who has given me a sneak peak at the first August cover. Is that satire, or just plain mean?

See, everyone knows that effective satire will be despised by some on either side of an argument. But when your satire becomes your target's recruiting poster, maybe you missed an impportant element. And maybe, if you're going to throw Osama Bin Laden's face into your cartoon, it had better be to get a big laugh, or to make a big point.

New Yorker is simply poking fun at how stupid and gullible some of us can be in believing all the false rumors about Obama. Any way, the magazine is garbage and I haven't read it since the early eighties. I saw an interview of two hee haws in TN, the wife said she's been voting democrat all her life but not this time because Obama is a "muslim". And, her husband said that he wouldn't vote for a black man. The cartoon is directed at those feeble minds. I'm sure it must not be a surprise for some, but a lot of America is not as educated, enlightened or sophisticated as people might think. All you have to do is go to some midwestern states and down south.

Someone just sent me this link to a comprehensive video covering Barack Obama. In it...is a complete history of where he came from, what he thinks, things he's said (in his OWN voice) and I'm sure he hoped that they would be lost and forgotten forever, but someone has captured them and put them on this shocking video for all to see and hear. It is called "Connect The Dots."Please watch and listen to this video and share it with others. It is the only way we can wake people up in time and try and stop this "Changeling" from overtaking the White House in November.God help us all...!!!http://www.eyeblast.tv/Public/Video.aspx?rsrcID=2036

The photo they should have used is one of a "colobus monkey" ... It's a black and white monkey that comes from Kenya.. It would be more fitting for the article....

I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE MEDIA OR OBAMA HIMSELF TO EXPLAIN THIS QUOTE FROM HIS BOOK " I WILL STAND WITH THE MUSLIMS SHOULD THE POLITICAL WINDS SHIFT IN AN UGLY DIRECTION " BY BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT HENRY, C. JENKINS OR ANY OTHER OBAMA SUPPORTER ? WHY WAS IT SO FUNNY WHEN THEY PORTRAYED HILLARY IN EVERY DISGUSTING WAY THAT THEY COULD, BUT THIS PICTURE OF THE OBAMAS IN THE POST ISNT FUNNY ? IF THE TURBAN FITS .........

You may be correct. However, reminding them who they are, never the less will not matter.

I think the cover of the Obama's on the NEW YORKER
magazine says it all. the couple can deny, hate , the cover photo, nut that's the truth about them.
Wish Belkin4:06PMJul 14th 2008
This didn't have to be explained to me. I understand satire. But, can someone explain how the so-called "Intelectuals" at the New Yorker couldn't forsee the aftermath in such a volatile political climate? A remarkable display of naivete'.
Ron Paul for President !! (write it in)
Tommy Christopher4:17PMJul 14th 2008
Wish,
of course they knew what the aftermath would be. Now, they'll sell a jillion copies, and I can pick one up on ebay for $.02 plus shipping in a couple of months.
Tommy Christopher4:20PMJul 14th 2008
Dreamridge,
really? nobody read you the whole quote? You never read the actual book? What Obama was saying was that, if Muslim Americans started suffering persecution after 9/11, he would stick up for them, just as any decent person would.
Paula4:30PMJul 14th 2008
Ok, Henry, you don't have to make comments about how people in the South are ignorant and do not understand what this is all about. I'm proud to be from the South and I am a College Graduate. I'm also a proud Marine wife who loves this country. I am very proud to be an American! So wake up people and don't vote for Obama - a man who is not proud of this country and refuses to show respect to the flag during our National Anthem! Watch John's video he has posted on his blog. It should scare all Americans and make you terrified at the thought of Obama becoming President.

I think anyone voting for Mccain is only doing so to vote against a black man not because Mc Cain is the better candidate. Its ashame after 8 years...8 years i said, of Bush slowly ..no quickly..tearing this country apart, you would sacrifice your well being over being a racist.
Esther4:36PMJul 14th 2008
The American society should never accuse a black individual of playing the 'race card'; it is quite clear who masters the 'race card'...the one who owns the deck.
shari greer4:42PMJul 14th 2008
Unfortunatly too many people think that THIS is the truth and are too stupid to see that it is pure fiction. Both covers are tacky. But mags need to do something to sell... so they sell out to a tacky cartoon... no surprise.
Denise4:46PMJul 14th 2008
If you think that's satire, it's just a rehashing of an 1867 article by the New York Times writer who had a hissy fit over blacks voting and getting into politics and office "way back then!"

Does anyone here even KNOW what a satire is? The point of a satire is for people to see a cartoon, a movie, or a piece of literature and look in the mirror. It's obvious the point of the cartoon is to show to others exactly how they are, just a bit exaggerated. This is not against Obama at all, it's against those who hold these prejudices against him for having a Muslim parent and for being a black man. In fact, if anything, I think the cartoon of McCain is much more serious.
