Another Subpoena Defied

Bush has once again asserted executive privilege to prevent Attorney General Michael
Mukasey from having to comply with a House Government Oversight Committee subpoena for material on the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity. Panel Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., held off a contempt vote for Mukasey, but not for too long. He last week told Karl Rove he couldn't testify, either. Waxman's committee wants documents of FBI interviews of Vice President Dick Cheney over the Plame affair. It also would like to see documents involving conversations between special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and Cheney, and notes from the 2003 State of the Union address, during which Bush uttered those "16 words" about Saddam Hussein allegedly trying to obtain yellowcake from Niger. Waxman asked for the documents over a year ago, then subpoenaed them when the White House ignored the request.
Waxman rejected Mukasey's suggestion that Cheney's FBI interview on the CIA leak should be protected by the privilege claim - and therefore not turned over to the panel.
"We'll act in the reasonable and appropriate period of time," Waxman, D-Calif., said. This unfounded assertion of executive privilege does not protect a principle; it protects a person ... If the vice president did nothing wrong, what is there to hide?"
(As a side note, I'm in the middle of former White House spokesman' Scott McClellan's book, "What Happened," now, and it's just getting to the juicy parts of exactly what role Cheney may have had in the leak.)
Waxman wrote to Mukasey last week, warning him that if he didn't comply with the subpoena, he would be held in contempt. Saying the committee won't ask for the transcripts of the FBI's interviews with Bush himself over the matter "at this time," "the report of the FBI interview with Vice President Cheney needs to be produced," especially after Cheney's former chief of staff, Scooter Libby, acknowledged that it's "possible" Cheney told him to disseminate Plame's name to certain members of the press.
"The arguments you have raised for withholding the interview report are not tenable," the letter reads, especially if, at the time of the interview, Cheney knew the conversation could be brought up in a criminal trial. Fitzgerald's letter can be found here.
AP says Mukasey wrote to Bush in a letter dated Tuesday, saying several of the subpoenaed reports summarize conversations between Bush and advisers - direct presidential communications protected by the privilege.
"I am greatly concerned about the chilling effect that compliance with the committee's subpoena would have on future White House deliberations and White House cooperation with future Justice Department investigations," Mukasey wrote. "I believe it is legally permissible for you to assert executive privilege with respect to the subpoenaed documents, and I respectfully request that you do so."

ATHEISM: A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE!

Mr_Soapbox3:12PMJul 16th 2008
Mukasey won't talk, Rove won't talk, Dick Cheney-of course-won't talk.... it took YEARS to get Scooter Libby to talk...
WHY AREN'T MORE PEOPLE OUTRAGED BY THE BLATANT CORRUPTION OF THESE DISGUSTING JERKS!??
Ironically, it was EXACTLY ten years ago that a Republican-led 'investigation of perjury' was well underway: On July 15, 1998, Clinton's own Secret Service staff was subpoenaed by Kenneth Starr to testify in the Lewinsky case. A week later, & after much screaming & yelling about Executive Privilege & an over-reaching 'independent' counsel, the Secret Service staff was hauled over to the Grand Jury.
What really makes this all so disgusting to me, is how We the People, can be so easily duped into thinking "well, they MUST have a good enough reason."
Ten years ago, a question of lying about an affair in the Oval Office was a good enough reason to rigorously prosecute the President. Today, a question of whether the President & V.P. were part of a cover up to DISCLOSE THE IDENTITY OF A CIA AGENT--as a means of punishment for her husband's public condemnation of their WAR PLANS.... is somehow NOT a good enough reason to rigorously prosecute the President.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME???
These are strange times, indeed. Our Glorious President Bush could just as well walk naked down Pennsylvania Ave. and his GOP screened onlookers would happily wave & cheer him on in all his glory.

Unfortunately, this is politics as usual and nothing more. Even if these folks appear before the committee, nothing will get done. Congress needs to go home so they can run for reelection. Why didn't Waxman issue some of these subpoenas last year? Then, there would have been time to enforce them. Just another example of the do nothing Congress that promised to make everything right if we just gave them a Democratic majority.

Hasn't this congress realizes yet they neither command nor deserve respect from anyone. I'm not sure the congressional janitor would answer a subpoena to justify the price he paid for congressional ass wipe.

Mike -
Just another lib questioning "the billion dollar exec pay". Talk about something that would not affect gas prices.
Why don't you attack your Hollywood friends who make obscene amounts of money to star in a movie (that the public pays to see) or the sports stars that make ludicrous gobs of cash TO PLAY GAMES (that the public pays to see). Oh, I forgot they support the liberal agenda of neediness.
Oil execs make their billions in the stock options they negotiated. Since they have so successfully run their company, the options pay off. But if they fail the stockholders, not only do the stock options lose their value, but the execs ARE FIRED.
And, you know, Mike, I doubt any one of them, newly unemployed, would qualify for a any public assistance, nor would they want it. They would never settle for what the libs think is a good thing for all Americans, to be reduced to the lowest common denominator. Dumbed down. Trapped. Depressed.
Mike, would you rather your kids were successful oil execs or impoverished losers, living from paycheck to paycheck (or just check to check)? I know what you will say, but we both know what the your answer really is, now don't we?
Splash7:17PMJul 16th 2008
One more thing. It is the type of time wasting congressional pursuits that you suggest, "how about over sight of oil crisis and what going on with the billion dollar exec pay " that have contributed to this congress's lack of respect and rightly so.
Unless you've had your head in the sand, you already know that the congress has dragged big oil into their Salem Chambers, but when it was time to burn them at the stake not one of them had a lighter.
Maybe you are one of those typical Ted Kennedy libs that tries to steal the ideas of others and claim them as their own, a sickness that is now afflicting Obama. A common symptom is the sudden realization hat one cannot win the general election unless the disguise their liberalism.
So I'll ask you, Mike. Are you running for office? Do you have any political ambitions?
I wonder.

Someone just sent me this link to a comprehensive video covering Barack Hussein Obama.
In it is a complete history of where he came from, what he thinks, things he's said (in his OWN voice) and I'm sure he hoped that they would be lost and forgotten forever, but someone has captured them and put them on this shocking video for all to see and hear. It is called "Connect The Dots."
Please watch and listen to this video and share it with others. It is the only way we can wake people up in time and try and stop this "Changeling" from overtaking the White House in November.
God help us all!!!

This CORRUPT ADMINISTRATION must not get away with their criminal activities. I urge congress to continue with this investigation. Americans need to know the truth about all the deceit and greed Bush, Dick, Rove, Gonzales and all the other criminals in this administration has brought upon us.
JUDY fERGUSON10:24AMJul 17th 2008
Executive Privilege is not a Constitutional Privilage but a Supreme Court Ruling that needs to be overturned. Bush has ran a rough White House and Presidency that has put many Americans at risk!
He put our troops at risk without a plan to go to war and not have a exit plan. Our Congressional leader have put Americans at risk because they have no oversight of the Banking and Lending institutions.
The millionairs and Billinairs need to be tax to the max for they are the reason for Financial Meltdown in America and we the poor tax payers are always having to bail them out. They get richer why we get poorer, and poorer.
It is time for us poor Americans to STAND UP against
those who have been elected to office and our Congressional leaders. We are sick of the fighting and bashing in Washington in our dridlock congress.
What has the congress done for us lately
but allow America to become bankrupt? I do not want to be dependent on foreign oil or money.

I don't know about Michelle Obama, but I don't spend $600 on earrings, maybe $6 or $16 - but I guess that's what she thinks is the going price. Per Washington Post:
'Mrs. Obama said in Pontiac, Michigan, Wednesday that if her husband is elected he will offer more than a "quick fix" on the economy.
"You're getting $600 - what can you do with that? Not to be ungrateful or anything, but maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn't pay down every bill every month," she said. "The short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good, and it may even feel good that first month when you get that check, and then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings." '

Just another spoke in the great Bush wheel-of-lies. " I will find who's responsible and will fire him or charge him with treason". Fameous last words. More illegal acts have been performed by this administration strictly for political reasons than all the rest combined. And on top of that, the Congress has a backbone of jelly when it comes to standing up to Bush and his cronies. Any Congress worth their salt would have impeached the dork a long time ago. Like Al said in "Scent of a woman", they ought to take a flame-thrower to this place.

So many of you are so upset with the Obama family because they are black.

ROBERSON:
I'M NOT UPSET WITH THE COLOR OF OBAMA'S SKIN --- I'M UPSET WITH THE "THINNESS" OF HIS SKIN AND ALL THE LIES HE HAS TOLD OVER THE PAST YEAR. HE SIMPLY HAS LOST CREDIBILITY.
Obama the "trivia" candidate with a "flip flop" score of 100%.
Do we trust a guy who changes his name and his race to suit the moment?
I am not into a candidate I do not trust to keep a promise or a steady course.
He is a phony with too many ties to terrorists and anti-Americans.
WHERE'S THE BEEF???

Splash what are you saying:
"Why don't you attack your Hollywood friends who make obscene amounts of money to star in a movie (that the public pays to see) or the sports stars that make ludicrous gobs of cash TO PLAY GAMES (that the public pays to see)."
Gee the public makes the choice to see the movie so the star gets paid by choice- The public pays to go to the sporting event- gee they made a choice on how they spent thier own money.
FREEDOM OF CHOICE one of the many liberties this administration has taken away from the people by changing the Constitution to fit there own needs Shame Shame
BIASED MEDIA WORLD TOUR3:00PMJul 17th 2008
WWII’s TOKYO ROSE IS NOW A “TRIO” [ABC/Charles Gibson; NBC/Brian Williams; CBS/Katie Couric]!
Although we needed NO more proof of media bias, this trip seals it.
McCain goes abroad to help America and almost nothing is said.
When Barack Hussein Obama goes, it’s more than news; it’s glorification of an incompetent ignoramus.
It needs to be said: this kind of stuff is treason, pure and simple.
At the least, it is not the role of a free press to support a candidate for public office in this manner.
I’d say write your Congressman, but that’ll do no good.
The only thing left for decent Americans is their vote.
The media in America is more than a disgrace; IT IS THE “ENEMY WITHIN”.
They have never vetted Obama, even though it is their job to do so. They did not tell about his ties to terrorists and anti-Americans until AFTER half of America had voted.
Futhermore, their fawning over him in the Middle East will give aid and comfort to the enemy.
Get angry — Cry Treason!
GOD BLESS AMERICA.
VOTE FOR JOHN McCAIN IN 2008.
RocketRonnie7:57PMJul 17th 2008
It's sickening to see the twisting of facts, the absence of integrity, the loss of memory, the brain-dead and blind support of criminals just because they are in the "correct" party. You are all fools my friends. McCain is a blithering idiot and Obama already looks like he is sucking up to the crooked establishment. How can people make a correct judgement when so few people acknowledge the way news is skewed and facts omitted. Who cares if we get liberal or conservative? An HONEST man of either persuasion is desperately needed in this, our hour of greatest need. So many people in here see everything JUST AS THEY WANT. They have no honor. I know someone is honorable when they can give a genuine compliment to the opposition, when they can acknowledge the validity of the other side's logic. On the other hand there are those who only can sling mud and throw foul lies about the oppostion. You are not American when you want to stiffle an opposing opinion. You are not American when you just give lip service to supporting the troops. You are NOT patriotic when you feed like pigs at the corporate propaganda trough. Until you mental retards from the right and you mental retards from the left can acknowledge that we BOTH NEED EACH OTHER to overthrow the most heinous and criminal administration since the times of Rome, we are ALL DOOMED. This country has lost it's ability to look at ANY ISSUE with openess and fairness. We have been emotionally charged by the media and whipped into a frenzy. This assures our inability to make an intelligent decision. You all know many people who cannot be rational, from both sides. Until you start supporting your political opposite, democracy will continue to eat itself. I come from a family of conservatives. My grandfater would be HORRIFIED to see how today's conservatives don't question their own party, to see a shirker and liar and anti-Constitutionalist like Bush in the office of President, to see both sides of Congress in a race to see who can do more to destroy our country and our Constitution. Bush is the OPPOSITE of what it means to be conservative, and you cons sit with your heads up your fanny and let him trash our laws with impunity. You buy every single lie coming down the turnpike, and base your decision on the evidence of repeat liars and deceivers. How can Americans have gotten so stupid? Conservatives used to be intelligent, they used to have integrity, they used to believe in honor. All gone. There was no terrorist army ready to attack the USA, maybe now, but not before. 9/11 was an INSIDE JOB. Oh the howls from the cement heads, I can hear them now. Who did you rely upon for information about 9/11? the GOV? WOW. How retarded. America is in moral decay, not because of liberal lifestyles, but because of a shallow attachment to faith-based beliefs against things like abortion and gay marriage, not on soundly moral beliefs like respect for truth and respect of each other's rights. Yes it's hard to believe in the rights of people you dislike or despise, but it is absolutely necessary if we are to continue as a nation. WE NEED THE TRUTH, and clearly WE AREN'T GETTING IT. And when we DO get it, we need to RECOGNIZE IT. Go ahead, hack away at my post. It won't help anything. Until we UNITE with respect for ALL, this nation will continue to decline, and the true enemies of democracy will continue to slither their way to greater power.

Early on Richard Armatige admitted to outing Valerie Plame. The White House had nothing to do with Richard Armitage outing Valerie Plame but Democrats, armed with Special Prosecuter Patrick Fitzgerald, were loaded for bear and not willing to go home empty handed.
The best they could do is get Scooter Libby for a he said she said in which more people sided against Scooter Libby.
Democrats are still trying to manufacturer an issue and find more administration officials to give the Scooter Libby treatment. History may look back at Waxman as the McCarthy of his era.
"Recently 550 metric tons of yellowcake uranium found in Iraq was purchased by a Canadian company and shipped to Canada. Saddam acquired most of this uranium prior to 1991 but still had it in 2003 when U.S. troops found it. The IAEA seems to have known about the yellowcake in the 1990's, but did nothing to force Saddam to get rid of it."
SADDAM's NUKES
IBD July 8th 2008
No doubt Saddam was waiting for a change of political wind in the U.S. when an Al Gore, John Kerry or Obama would lift sanctions and he could weaponize the uranium he stored for al least a decade.
"Given what we know, including comments by officals in Niger's government, Iraq did make overtures to buy uranium. And i's quite possible all or part of the 550 tons came from there."
But yellowcake wasn't all they found at Tuwaitha. According to the AP, the military also discovered "four devices for controlled radiation exposure.....that could potentially be used in a weapon."
.....this should put to rest the canard peddeled by the American left and former Ambassador Joseph Wilson that "Bush lied" about Iraq seeking yellowcake from the African country of Niger."
SADDAM'S NUKES
IBD July 8th 2008
So while Couric, Williams and Gibson sniff around Obama for a story on Obama's FIRST trip to Iraq the liberal media has most of America in the dark on just what we DID find in Iraq.
Democrats like Waxman continue to ignore the facts and chant the "Bush lied" mantra for political gain.
rebecca12:14AMJul 18th 2008
Linda, she was being facetious. $600 doesn't go far and to think giving each family in the country--which is a false claim in itself (i didn't qualify because i am disabled and actually did not make enough---To think giving most families a one-time hand out of $600 would stimulate the economy is a joke, just like $600 earrings. Of course Cindy McCain probably pays more than that for her earrings. How else would she be spending $1/4 million a month?
