Jimmy Carter Was Right
Jul 16th 2008 9:01AM
Filed Under:ePresident Bush, Democrats, Featured Stories, Energy
I realize that bashing Jimmy Carter is something of a favorite sport for many people in our country. But when it comes to energy conservation and the dismal situation we now find ourselves in regarding foreign oil dependence, and a withering auto industry, Carter's diagnosis and solutions would have largely spared us the pain we're all now feeling.Last night, NPR's "Marketplace" ran a few excerpts of Carter's famous "Crisis of Confidence" speech (watch the entire speech here) , and it was striking to realize that if we'd simply followed the former president's 1979 energy blueprint, we'd not be in our current mess. Among the goals Carter laid out that night were:
--Never use more foreign oil than that which we ourselves produce.
--Start massive government investment to develop alternative sources of fuel.
--Mandate that utility companies cut their use of oil by 50%, and switch to alternative fuels.
--Give $10 billion to strengthen the nation's public transportation system.
--Drastically raise CAFE standards for US automakers.
The speech called on Americans to buy energy bonds, so as to take direct ownership in America's energy policy. It advocated personal sacrifice coupled with government action, all of which was ditched by Carter's successor, Ronald Reagan, in favor of the unfettered, free-market approach. That attitude has continued to persist, and was evident in President Bush's address yesterday in which he refused to prod the country into even attempting to conserve.
To Bush-once an oil man, always an oil man-the only solution is more drilling. Unfortunately, even if we hit a gusher on the first try, more domestically produced oil won't have an effect on current gas prices for may years to come. So here we are, grasping for short-term solutions to problems that always required long-range thinking.
It's too bad the country didn't follow through with Carter's plan. But his words still ring true, as this line from the speech:
"Every act of energy conservation like this is more than just common sense-I tell you it is an act of patriotism."
For further reading on why we should have gone with Carter's energy plan, try the following articles from:

And here's my take on why drilling isn't really the answer to the question of how to lower gas prices.

BS BS BS - You take a few decent words from Carter and try to make him sound like a whole lot more than he was just for another opportunity to bash Bush. Bush did not do this! The oil co's did not do this! Obstructionist democrats, Obstructrionist republicans, enviromentalists, fear and Islamists who want to destroy us did this. We and you need to get our heads out of the sand and become energy independent. Even Carter leaned that way is your precious speech.
If the house is on fire, you first put the fire out, then you rebuild it. We are burnig down. Drill Oil! McCain wants to drill and wants to give 300 mill to someone for develping something better. That's a good deal. Ya'll gotta realize though it's going to take years to switch over if we do switch over and in the meantime we need oil. We need to be energy independent and not counting on those who don't like us to supply our needs.
Mike W10:46AMJul 16th 2008
and btw - I'm not a guru, but I can "armchair" it pretty good - I've been telling folks for months now if we'll say we are going to drill the price will top and dip, if we'll say we've loaded the equipment and are heading that way the price will start falling and when we hit the price will plummett. 2 days ago bush removed the executive restriction on offshore drilling and the price dipped. Is it the beginning!? We'll see. Now we need congress to participate. Have you signed the petition? Drill here, drill now, pay less.

I am sure you all have noticed that Obama gets about 89% of press coverage and media coverage. McCain gets about 11% time and usually bad press and media coverage. This is getting bery biased and one sided. Either Obama is buying the press and media, which I think he is doing or the media and the press are so liberal and unfair that they think their sh*t don't stink. I used to be a democrate when they were democrates but, now they are so far in left field that they care more for the people who kill than they do for the people being killed. They are absurd......
MAP10:57AMJul 16th 2008
I don't care what petition we sign the democrates don't want to listen to the people. They are not listening to us and for political reasons they are listening to the people less and less. This is getting scary people, the democrates in the house and senate are completely ignoring us and not doing what is right for this country and the people. What has happened to the democratic party? I thought they were for the people? I guess they want to wait for Obama to tell them what to do before they act. Now, it appears it is not what the people want but what Barack their god wants that matter.

yes we have known for 30 plus years this day was coming,
and so did the car manufacturers, the oil company's, the energy company. etc etc etc.
and all of our government officials.
and why has more not been done.
simply one word
GREED,
and the worse offenders are the politicians
because their biggest revenue of taxes come from these very venues.
my electric bill, if I only paid for the power I actually used would be less than half what I actually pay. but with all the taxes, and fees aded on, it is ridiculous.
car manufactures say that they make big vehicles because that is what the public demands. bull it is because they make money selling them.
we know they have the techology to give the public the vehicles they are comfortable in, that are very energy efficient.
but then the oil comapny would simply raise the price of fuels to soaring rates so we the public would still pay through our asses. not that we are not now.
we know we have enough oil right here in this country to tell Opec to go to hell.
but we refuse to tap into it.
and yes Jimmy Carter was right.and we have no one to blame but ourselves.
people want alternatives, but fight wind power because they are eyesores and make too much noise.
surely the noise factor could be dealt with, and so what if we have to see the towers, we have lived with power lines and electric poles our whole lives, and survived, and they are eyesores.
seems we want our cake and yet eat it too.

DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW - THAT WILL BRING PRICES DOWN IMMEIDATELY. STOP THE HUGH CORN TO ETHANOL SCAM - I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THOSE ENVIRONMENTALISTS AREN'T UP IN ARMS OVER IT. IT PRODUCES MORE AIR AND WATER POLUTION THAN OIL! THIS WHOLE ECONOMY IS IN A TAIL SPIN BECAUSE WE ARE DEPENDANT FOR OUR LIFE'S BLOOD ON FOREIGN OIL. DRILLING IN THE BEST PLACES IS THE FIRST STEP, THEN GET THOSE IDIOTS IN WASHINGTON TO COME UP WITH A VIABLE ENERGY PLAN THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE CAP AND TRADE. PELOSI AND REID ARE IDIOTS.

Increasing the amount of oil supply now will decrease the cost of oil long before oil is being pumped from those new sources because an increase in the future supply will quell speculators from driving up the price of oil futures.
As for increases in CAFE as a solution, thats the same logic as saying we should address America's obesity problem by forcing stores to sell smaller clothes. People are flocking to smaller cars now even without CAFE. Maybe something to do with $4 gas? The disappointing thing is that our domestic manufacturers didn't see all of this coming sooner. They all knew for years that China would become the next huge market so they should have realized that there would be more demand for oil, and without more supply, the prices would "surge".
Decrease consumption and increase supply. That is our way out. Doing one without the other won't work nearly as well.

I'm sure ya'll must love Harry Reid. I'm sure he must do a lot for you. But, couldn't somebody else do a lot for you also? Maybe somebody who doesn't want to block everything good just so he can then turn around and say, "hey, it's the republicans fault." Well, guess what, it's not the republicans fault. He's the leader, he's supposed to lead. Did you know, he says they won't be voting on drilling because he is going to introduce his own plan; the democrat plan. They just want to blame it on speculators. I guess maybe the'll sue the speculators and opec in a class action suit that will take 20 or 30 years and when it's all over we'll each get a $3.58 or so check. That does not cut it. It does not need to be a democrat or republican plan - it needs to be plan for the people, a plan for the good of the country.
How about your thoughts? I'd be curious - please post. Please call his office if you are so inclined.
Thanks,
Michael11:28AMJul 16th 2008
Mike W couldn't be more wrong and Carter was spot on in his assessment of this countries future if it continued to suck up foreign oil like drunken sailors. Bush and Co. certainly is not singularly responsible for this mess but has a lot to answer for. It is absolutely shameful that this administration has for 8 years done nothing to encourage industry or the American consumer to conserve, R&D alternatives, and prepare for a day of diminishing oil on the planet. Oil experts not bought as mouth pieces have said over and over that we cannot drill our way out of this, this countries present consumption makes whats in the ground here paltry. Having lived in the Florida Keys I can tell you that Floridians have no interest in a potentially catastrophic hit to their coast and economy with a Valdez level oil spill just so some New Yorker can drive his Humvee a little longer. This admin should have been championing conservation and alternatives if for no other reason global warming, oh- thats right they don't believe thats happening. Jimmy was a prophet but they didn't listen to Noah either.....enjoy your swim.

I'm glad Jimmy Carter is not still in the White House, if he were gas would be $2 a gallon but cashews would be $100 a pound.

This Bud is for YOU?11:22AMJul 16th 2008
The McCains, do not worry about them, they will be fine will probably make $800,000 to 1.5 million on the sale of Budweiser..And everyone calls Obama the Elitist, Cindy spends $750,000 on her credit cards and she still does not get a decent haircut.
No more Rich and Well-connected in the White House.
Dear this buds for you
I'm pissed that Bud sold out. I don't know if Cindy & John are happy about it either. I'm sure they probably don't need the 800 to million you speak of. As far as the 750k on her credit card - grow up! Check facts. Does she do that every month? I don't think so but so what if she does. She's got the money and I bet she's not late on the bill. I think the month she did that was when she went to do charitable work over seas. I'm sure she took an entourage with her and I doubt she asked anybody to buy their own dinner or share fuel costs with her.
Mike W12:34PMJul 16th 2008
Michael,
Sounds like you are not still in the Keys - talk to anybody there lately, tourism down? These gas prices have put a dent in tourism. You do know the Chinese are drilling down there now don't you? Why shouldn't we? I trust us more to be environmentally sound about it than I do them. Not a spill in LA when Katrina went through? The experts you speak of may be the bought and paid for experts because the other experts say oil would be up and out in 1-6 years. That's pretty quick. Some experts also believe our reserves there are greater than the reserves of Saudi Arabia. I for one would like to find out. What say the rest of you??
Oh, and as far as Jimmy being a profet, HA! The speech was in 79. The pump lines had died down by then. He spoke after the problem was realized. Profets foretell, sort of like palm readers and you don't believe them until you find out they were right, kind of like Noah.
Mike W12:35PMJul 16th 2008
Another thing about "Michael" saying I was wrong - maybe maybe not. Have you all seen crude oil is down today so far another 4.5 right now. Looking at a chart it has now broken a point of resistance. Still, chances are it won't plummet overnight yet, but, it is a start. Have we seen the high? We'll see. Don't expect it to fall at the pump for a few days either way. The local stations still have to pay for what's in the tanks without going to the cleaners.
Alouisis12:36PMJul 16th 2008
More oil is not the answer. It is expensive, finite and dirty as sin.
The answer is hydrogen cracked from water (not oil, coal or natural gas - the stupidest way to make hydrogen the only dumber way would be to maybe use wood). Water covers 3/4 of the planet - more than plentiful. Burning hydrogen is absolutely clean and only creates more water. Hydrogen is compatible with your car - the one you drive today - and every combustionprocess - coal fired power plants, steel mills, trucks, trains and planes.
The technology DOES exist to do this. You can buy a new BMW production car that can run on either hydrogen or gasoline at the touch of a button. It is safe, it is real, it works and there is no foreign producer jacking the price.
HYDROGEN

Why don't we hear more about conservation? Is there anything wrong with conserving our resources, especially one that contributes to worldwide pollution?
MTM12:37PMJul 16th 2008
Live it to NPR to attempt to give credit to Jimmy Carter. He never had anything right.
pmallette603812:38PMJul 16th 2008
Please remember that we still have a free-market economy. India and China will pay ANYTHING for oil. What's to stop the oil drilled off our shores from being sold overseas. Drilling here will not reduce the price of oil.

Great stuff. Conversely, as I'm sure you'll soon read, are the claims that if we had only started off-shore drilling 20 years ago, we'd be fine!
