Obama's $52 Million in June
Jul 17th 2008 8:30AM
Filed Under:eDemocrats, Barack Obama, Breaking News, Fundraising
There was some whispering around the blogosphere that Barack Obama's money momentum was slowing. Now that the general election had truly begun, it was said, John McCain was proving every bit the human cash machine as his Democratic rival. After all, McCain raised $21 million in May, while Obama's tally fell to just $22 million. Surely, the trend-line was clear, and we'd see a continuation in June. Well, kiss that rumor good-bye. From The Chicago Tribune:
Sen. Barack Obama's campaign raised $52 million in June, his campaign manager said this morning--not quite a record for the high-flying campaign, but close to it. The campaign had raised $55 million in February, during the Democratic primaries.
But it's sill more than twice what Republican rival Sen. John McCain raised during June--$22 million.
Many Americans still have the perception that Obama's large hauls are somehow made up of massive donations from millionaires the likes of Oprah Winfrey, but the average June donation came in at a whopping $64. Have a calculator handy? $52 million divided by $64 equals... That's right, 812,500 donated to Obama in June.
But there's a silver lining for the GOP. The RNC has has out-raised the DNC so that even with Obama's huge advantage in June, the RNC/McCain cash-on-hand total stands at $100 million The DNC/Obama total is $92 million. While a good chunk of the money that has been raised for the respective parties will go directly to help the presidential candidates, a lot of it will be poured into competitive, lower-ticket races.

Senate Votes to Triple AIDS FundingBy JIM ABRAMS, AP (July 16) -
The Senate voted Wednesday to triple spending for a much-acclaimed program that has treated and protected millions in Africa and elsewhere from the scourges
of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
Here many of our own citizens are suffering financial hardships are living without health care and our "do-nothng Senate" decides to give 48 billion to fund aid
programs in Africa? How far down on the list of priorities would you place this legislation? It would be at the very bottom of mine.
Is this what we can look forward to under an Obama Boy administration?
I don't think so ...where is the rage?
Small donors? Don't be fooled

Obama's donation website accepts illegal foreign contributions
Barack Obama's electronic contribution site (https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/abroadHP -- not hyperlinked for obvious reasons) accepts donations from countries like China, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Somalia -- although someone had the sense to remove North Korea from the list. The donor is only required to click a check-box, which attests they are legally allowed to contribute.
How much of this money is coming from automated systems with small donations charged to but a single credit card or international wire transfer.
Discerning minds want to know.

It would be great to find out where all of Hussein Obama's donations are coming from?

The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee ended June with a combined total of $92.3 million in the bank. The figure represents a notable fundraising jump, especially for the DNC.
Obama reported $72 million cash on hand and the DNC $20.3 million. But the Democrats still lag Republican John McCain’s presidential campaign and the Republican Party.
Last week, McCain reported raising more than $22 million in June, which was his best month of the year. Together, the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee began July with about $95 million in the bank.
Could the news about the DNC coffers be another PM myth?

Is there any amount of money, legal or otherwise that will turn this sows ear into a silk purse?

Dump Obama now
“We must get the American public to look past the glitter, beyond the showmanship...to reality, to the hard substance of things. And we will do that not so much with speeches that sound good as with speeches that are good and sound. Not so much with speeches that bring people to their feet as with peeches that bring people to their senses.” (Governor Mario Cuomo, DNC
Keynote Address, July 16, 1984.)
And then, in a brilliant turn of events, the convention rises up and dumps Barack Obama.

Money can't buy me luv, but it sure doesn't hurt either.
Just think what all the millions raised and spent on fleeting advertising could have done if those same donors had contributed at least HALF to charity {same with all the other candidates}.
There needs to be a CAP on campaign spending {and the loop holes need to be closed on 527s, etc so that they can't be used as excuses to keep right on throwing millions into the fire to burn your opponent -and outside groups can't be used as nasty smear machines}
Ohhh well -so much for the new style of politics. Goes right along with the hulkin SUVs and suburban mansions. The ole ~big is good and more is even better~ attitude.
But don't count on me -I'd rather donate to my favorite charities.

Mary B,
Thank you for your comment. It is illegal for foreign governments to donate to political candidates. Everyone who donates to either McCain or Obama must be a US citizen.

If your remarks about foreigners contributing are true, what happened to the investigation that was SUPPOSED to take pace concerning Iraqi billionaire Nadhmi Auchi?

The Washington think tank, the Campaign Finance Institute, has found that Obama led the pack with small and secret donations pulling in about $31 million during 2007. One concern is that foreigners can make illegal online contributions. Obama's website allows donors to choose an address in one of 227 possible countries or territories, including Iran, Iraq, Zimbabwe, and Yemen. It is a crime for most foreigners to donate to American campaigns at the federal level; however, those with green card status can donate legally as can Americans living abroad.
Clinton is the only candidate that directs visitors to her web site who want to list an address abroad to a special page which advises that such donations are only taken by mail and that donors "must include a copy of your U.S. passport or green card."
Obama's campaign office was contacted and asked why they do not do something similar to Clinton, but they have not responded.

does not matter, as long as they keep sending money. All the Muslims in America can close the money gap.

In the latest NY Times/CBS News poll, I think one number has been over looked.
Michelle Obama has a stunningly low approval rating with white people. Only 24% white Americans have a favorable view of her.
By the way, Barack Obama didn't do that much better with white folks, which is also disconcerting. He only had a 30% approval rating.
And these average american white folks are sending small contributions to Obama...
I was born a while ago but it was not yesterday
