Congressional GOPers in Alaska
While Obama is fact-finding in Iraq, a congressional GOP delegation is in Alaska, highlighting the plight of the caribou pointing out that we have $1 trillion dollars worth of oil in them thar hills. From the KC Star:
"It's still a long road," said Steve Hansen, a GOP spokesman on the House Natural Resources Committee, where Rep. Don Young of Alaska has long pushed for drilling. "But right now the chances for opening ANWR for drilling are better than they have been for years."
Would more drilling in Alaska, in the end, move prices at the pump? Barely, suggest experts.
Still, geologists believe much could be sucked from the new petroleum frontier. Oil worth at least $1 trillion likely sits below the refuge. It could add 27 million gallons of gasoline and diesel to the daily U.S. supply, or an increase of 20 percent of domestic production. Over the estimated 30-year life of the oil field, drilling could deliver between 5 billion and 20 billion barrels of oil.
Michele Bachman from NR went along and took some pictures:

Ugh. The Grand Canyon, this is not.
But the unintentionally funniest line goes to Roger Kaye of the Fish and Wildlife service:
Roger Kaye helps manage ANWR for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is the author of Last Great Wilderness. Even if caribou numbers don't decline - they actually rose around Prudhoe Bay with the construction of the Alaska Pipeline in the 1970s - the herds might become more tame and accustomed to humans.
Wait, what? We're not drilling in Alaska and diverting $1 trillion worth of oil revenue from domestic to foreign companies so that we can prevent our caribou herds from becoming more tame!?!?
America is spending $60 bucks ++ to fill up their gas tanks (and more for heating oil) I think we can deal with tame caribou.

I love when people bash congress without pointing out the fact the Mr Bush has used the power of veto more than any president in the history of the country. That aside... drilling for our oil would barely put a dent in the national gas price average until we depleted our sources at which point we would truly be at the mercy of foreign oil and they can and will charge us as much as they want simply because we have no other option. I could care less about the environmental costs personally.

Who will this oil go to? Senator McCain was one of a handful of Senators to vote against a resolution that would have designated all oil from ANWR for US domestic uses only. In other words, we could drill their and send the oil to Japan or China or where ever oil companies wanted. If we drill there ALL THE OIL NEEDS TO BE FOR DOMESTIC USE ONLY. I challenge you to find out where most North Slope oil goes. WE also need to stop thinking of our solution in terms of oil. If we do not we will still be in servitude to others.

DRILL anwar then after however years it takes to remove the oil in a short amount of time we can remove our small footprint there and anwar can go back to being the barren wasteland that it was before

The Democrats are going to have to work with the GOP about the oil issue, or they will lose in November. We (family/friends) know people who support Barack Obama. But, the support is eroding due to the gas prices and high food costs for themselves/family. People's pocketbooks trumps favorability of a presidential candidate.

For decades now Democrats have been telling us high oil/gas prices were caused by the greedy oil companies. Democrats have launched scores of "investagations" over the years and have CONSISTENTLY come up with NOTHING.
Recently Democrats grilled oil company excutives to get that all important "sound bite" of them getting tough with the oil companies for the folks back home. Other than a dog and pony show it has produced NOTHING.
Pelosi and Democrats in Congress recently shelved a Republican initiated proposal to drill offshore. Any improvement in gas prices and the economy before the election would not be a good scenario for Democrats. Pelosi could not end the war as she promised the far left base but Republicans could get to drill through her Congress. Not wanting that much egg on her face she was concerned enough "Blue Dog" democrats would vote with Republicans to pass the initiative she pulled it.
With the only Democrats to occupy the White House in 40 years being Jimmy Carter and Bill CLinton Democrats have little reason to to anything to lower gas prices, prop up the dollar, stabilize the stock market and improve the economy while a Republican is in the White House. And that is just what Democrats have done for two years now, NOTHING.
Most people blame President Bush for high gas prices but it is our DO NOTHING Democrats in CONGRESS that actually have the power to take action , allow drilling and relieve the suffering of many Americans. President Bush can call for action, as he has done, but only our DO NOTHING Democrats in Congress can make it happen.
Recently President Bush lifted the Presidential moratorium on offshore drilling and oil prices fell $13 in a few days.
The ball is now in Congress's court. The World, like me, sees our do nothing Democrats in Congress unwilling to upset the far left "Al Gore" Greenie base before the election and allow drilling, so oil prices are drifting back up.
President Bush lifted the Presidential moratorium on offshore drilling and prices fell $13. Just imagine what would happen to oil prices if our Do Nothing Democrats in Congress allowed offshore drilling, never mind when a drill bit touches the ground or oil starts showing up on the market.
PAIN AT THE PUMP is self inficted. Democrats are pandering to their liberal core base's enviromental and global warming issues for votes and the rest of us are paying the price at the PUMP.
