Hillary to Bush: Contraception is Not Abortion

In the proposal, obtained by The New York Times, the administration says it could cut off federal aid to individuals or entities that discriminate against people who object to abortion on the basis of "religious beliefs or moral convictions."But Hillary Clinton struck back yesterday, issuing a scathing rebuke in protest. From Huffpo:
The proposal defines abortion as follows: "any of the various procedures - including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action - that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation."
The Bush administration is up to its old tricks again, quietly putting ideology before science and women's health. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is poised to put in place new barriers to accessing common forms of contraception like birth control pills, emergency contraception and IUDs by labeling them "abortion." These proposed regulations set to be released next week will allow healthcare providers to refuse to provide contraception to women who need it. We can't let them get away with this underhanded move to undermine women's health and that's why I am sounding the alarm.
This is a vivid example of why Hillary Clinton should be Vice President, and why no-one who cares about women should vote for John McCain. This is an assault on women's health and reproductive freedom, and it didn't require a single judicial appointment, or referendum, or legislative action.
Having a Democrat in the White House, particularly with Hillary Clinton as the VP, will mean cleansing every level of government of the ideological mildew that has grown there for 8 years.
Senator Clinton concluded her piece with a plea for help:
We've seen this kind of ideologically driven move from the Bush administration before. Senator Patty Murray and I went toe to toe with the Bush administration to demand a decision on Plan B by the FDA. We won that fight and we need to win this one too.
When I learned about these proposed rules, I immediately joined with Senator Murray to call on the Bush administration to stop these dangerous plans. I am joining with New York family planning and healthcare advocates to spread the word. Now is the time to raise our voices. I will continue to press HHS and I hope you will join me. I have posted information on how to get involved here.

Bush was not trying to ban these contracpetion methods, only reinforcing the laws on job descimination. Federal law says employers cannot base emoloyment on a persons regilious views. There are many devout Catholic doctors that would not prescribe any drug that causes an abortion. Abortion is defined as the termination of a life, which is anytime after the egg is fertilized.
Many people do not realize that the common birth control pill, IUD, Plan B, emergency contraception all cause abortions. However, if you or any of your friends wish to continue having abortions then Bush is not stopping you, only stopping doctors and others from being fired for not performing them.

The vast majority of Americans do not equate swallowing a birth control pill or using an IUD or a condom as equivalent to an abortion. This is the far right wing of the GOP once again trying to impose their values on all of us. If you think this is nonsense, keep in mind the state of Georgia some time ago introduced legislation to limit and or ban birth control in the state. It went nowhere, but the fact that an elected state Rep. actually introduced such a bill should concern every reasonable minded American.

Any doctor will tell you that an IUD works by irritating the uterus so that the fertilized egg (baby) will not attach and thus be expelled from the woman. In other words, aborted! Time of development does not matter. To take an "emergency" pill AFTER sperm has been released, with the possiblity of the egg being fertilized is to again stop the implantating of the fertilized egg. In other words, abortion. I do not have time for political correctness. Know your facts before lumping everything together!

Denise.....I did the very same thing. Go HillPAC!
David S.....good points, as usual.
Real Truth....Perhaps you're the one who needs to "know your facts". It seems as though Pres. Bush and his HHS Secretary are the ones "lumping everything together" here. No time for being PC?
Larry....take it from a medical professional, oral contraceptives do not "cause abortions", as they suppress ovulation so that conception doesn't occur in the first place. Job discrimination? Huh?

Tommy Christopher,
Yeah, I got an e-mail from Hillary today regarding this new low from Bush. What a sneaky bastard? I made a very small contribution to her PAC (HillPAC) and signed their petition.
It made me feel good to know that she seems to be on top of her game. It was me who was not. I signed the petition and noticed at the bottom it said "Contribute" and I though it was to her campaign to help retire her debt. But, the receipt showed otherwise. I will continue to help her throughout the years when I can.
On another note, what is the deal with Nancy Pelosi (who claims to be neutral) seemingly setting the stage for Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to be VP? It's almost feels like she knows this for a fact and it was brokered some time ago. I don't trust Rep. Pelosi at all and maybe I am being paranoid. Do you have a take on this? It was in a couple of mainstream news stories yesterday.
Sincerely and respectfully,
Mr. Clark

Anyone wishing to help pay down Hillary's campaign debt should go directly to her web site. She has until the August Convention to raise money.

Senator Clinton stood up for YOU during the primaries ~and she is STILL on the front lines standing up for YOU. She gives a voice to ~those whose voice is not loud enough nor strong enough to be heard. She STANDS UP FOR women and children all across America.
And whether or not she was your candidate. She is a TRUE Democrat, and deserves your support now as much as she is supporting Senator Obama.

Very well said, Lady of Light, susan, blue moon and Mr. Clark! If you also still dare to hope for the Dream Ticket, you can take further action at this website:

Gads, it couldn't be any more clear that Senator Clinton should be the next President. She has her pulse on America and fights for what is right!
BIG mistake DNC and the news media!!!
susan6:47PMJul 23rd 2008
To Real Truth: according to the American Medical Association pregnancy occurs only AFTER implantation, therefore birth control pills do not result in abortion. Of course why let a little medical 'fact' stand in the way of you redefining the term to suit your personal (uninformed) opinion.
Lady of Light7:54AMAug 10th 2008
Tommy - thanks for sharing this important information. I signed the petition. The government should not have the authority over this issue for women and I am glad Hillary Clinton is speaking out about this and joining with health advocates in favor of protecting women.
I, too, would like to see Hillary as Vice President.

The Bush Administration's proposal to change the definition of abortion and reduce women's access to birth control must be stopped."

Just when I thought the Bush Administration could not stoop any lower! One step closer to attempting to overturn Roe v. Wade, while awaiting that empty bench seat on the Supreme Court, or so they believe? They've consistently waged a war against reproductive freedoms in the way of RU-486, Plan B and abortion, as well as against science in the way of opposing embryonic stem cell research, all in the name of religion, but this is going much too far....to extend to PREVENTATIVE methods of contraception.
Despite the unlikelihood of their success, it is incumbent upon all of us (especially women) to take action, along with Hillary and Patty Murray, and sign the petition linked at the very bottom of this article. Thanks for bringing this latest development on this crucial issue to the light of day, T. Leave it to Hillary to lead the way in this new battle in the ongoing war against women and their reproductive rights. All the more reason she should be involved in a new Democratic WH Administration.....Hey, all you PUMAs, et al., NOW do you see what we're up against with a possible McCain Administration? Duh.
