Delahunt Happy for Al Qaeda

By Caleb Howe

Congressman Bill Delahunt of Massachusetts today made an amazingly outrageous comment during a House hearing. Watch the clip below:

"I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you?" That would be Al Qaeda? Making matters worse, Delahunt offered an embarrassing effort to clean up his mess, saying he meant that he was happy to see Addington. Seriously.

"I'm sure they are watching. I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you, Mr. Addington, given your penchant for being unobtrusive."

Not much room for interpretation there Congressman.

Nevermind, It's Totally NOT OK To Laugh At Him

By Caleb Howe

Filed Under: Barack Obama, Humor, Media

Yesterday I posted a blog featuring Jon Stewart, in which he pokes fun at Obama and has to remind the crowd that it's "OK to laugh at him." Apparently, not so much.

Joseph Palermo of the Huffington Post is not happy with Jon Stewart. In a rambling and inaccurate article, Palermo posits Stewart is partly responsible for the Iraq war, and warns him that his "regurgitating" right wing talking points is working against Obama. He urges Stewart to poke fun at Obama only in a way that "reveals the Republicans' mendacity and hypocrisy." So, you know, no pressure.

"Slamming the UN weapons inspectors as ineffectual twits dominated right-wing talk radio at the time and The Daily Show was in effect regurgitating the talking points of those who wanted to bring the country to war. Dissing the UN's efforts on Comedy Central inadvertently helped make the case for war. It is kind of like when Dick Cheney pointed to the New York Times to buttress his warmongering saying: 'Hey, even the liberals agree with us!' When Jon Stewart seeks 'balance' for his targets of satire he can end up reinforcing the false impressions that the Bush Republicans want people to have. It's unfortunate because political humor is a powerful force that can sway some of those 'low information' voters the pundits have been flogging lately."

Translation: "You're off message, jerk. The dumb people need our propaganda and you're ruining everything! Quit starting the Iraq War all the time!" It is a cold, brutal shock to me to see a liberal blogger presume people are too dumb to be trusted with jokes. I'd say he's not indicative of the rest of the left-o-sphere, but other than a number of commenters at DailyKos calling the segment unfair and terrible, the left blogs seem pretty quiet on the matter.

Daniel and Noah, Not Alex

Last week, MoveOn debuted a general election ad titled "Not Alex," in which a young liberal mother is tearfully terrified her toddler might one day be conscripted into the Hundred Years War by the still-surviving head of John McCain, Dictator for Life of the post Obamalyptic nightmare of the future.

OK, that might be a slight exaggeration. Suffice it to say, the worried mom seems a little confused about a number of facts. Hot Air's Allahpundit said it best:

"... mom here hasn't yet grasped that (a) President McCain won't be setting Iraq policy for the next 18 years, let alone the next hundred, (b) MoveOn's candidate of choice has himself been dropping some dark hints lately about "tactical readjustments," and (c) whether McCain and the military can have her son is, um, up to her son, not her. The left (or at least the segment that MoveOn represents) still hasn't quite accepted the idea of a volunteer military."

Dave wonders why MoveOn would use the Politics of Fear™ that Senator Obama and many other Democrats purport to despise.

Well today, Confederate Yankee writes about a response ad now online from the family of Eric Egland.

You're Allowed to Laugh at Him

"The Daily Show" took a few shots at the Obama campaign during last night's episode. Jon joked about Obama's seal blunder and his reversal on public financing.

"Barack Obama has changed the motto of the Presidential seal from E Pluribus Unum, from many to one, to Vero Possumus, which rougly means yes we can. How do you say 'but you shouldn't' in Latin?"

Big public ... that's funny. Stewart had to point out it's OK to laugh at Senator Obama. You can read that sentence again if you like. Is de-sanctification a word?

Feingold Won't Filibuster

By Caleb Howe

Jun 23rd 2008 11:30PM

Via RedState's Moe Lane: Sen. Russ Feingold will not filibuster FISA. As Lane points out, Feingold is a star in the McCain constellation, having co-sponsored the famous, or infamous, Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, otherwise known as McCain-Feingold.

Senator Feingold promises the FISA compromise won't pass quickly, but not that it won't pass. He refers to the surveillance program of the last six years as misstep, and is seeking a commission to assess our surveillance needs, but the former McCain ally won't be filibustering. That's something I file under: Hmm. Interesting.

Depends On What the Meaning Of Endorse Is

I did not have endorsement relations with that candidate.Bill Clinton took a pass on an opportunity to MoveOn and endorse Senator Obama on Sunday, opting instead to shake hands, kiss babies, and effusively praise Senator Obama's energy and environmental policies as, meh, better than the Republicans' anyway.

It was President Clinton's first public appearance since his wife's suspension of her campaign. According to Reuters, when asked whether he would soon be endorsing Senator Obama, Clinton "smiled and shook hands with spectators without acknowledging he heard the question."

Later on at the same event, President Clinton addressed Senator Obama's carbon emissions plan. "Because I believe so strongly in this," he said, "I favor Senator Obama's position, which is to go to 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gasses over Senator McCain's position, which is to go to 70 percent. But that's light years ahead of where Republicans have been." That statement roughly translates to "Obama and McCain are both light years ahead of Bush, but Obama wins slightly ... I guess."

As Hot Air notes, President Clinton seemed to swear off the campaign trail in a statement earlier this month, saying "I want to say also, that this may be the last day I'm ever involved in a campaign of this kind," at a town hall event June 2. If this latest event is at all diagnostic, I'd say he's keeping to that plan.

Mad Hatter Holds Tea Party

Larry Sinclair today held the press conference that should never have been. With all the aplomb and believability of an anonymous, alphanumeric blog spammer, he reiterated his list of charges against Senator Obama which are too absurd to merit listing here at AOL. Political Machine's Tommy Christopher's excellent original reporting from earlier today answers the question of why such a press conference happened in the first place.

The preposterous event met with ho-hums from some and mocking ho-hums from others. Even so, two newsworthy bits of information came out of the circus.

First, according to the Politico, Sinclair's spokesman, Montgomery Blair Sibley attended wearing a kilt. Yes, a kilt. You know, a kilt. Seriously.

Obama's Choice Angers Clinton Supporters

By Caleb Howe

Filed Under: Hillary Clinton, Democrats, Barack Obama, 2008 President

Barack Obama's selection of Solis Doyle to be Chief of Staff for whoever becomes the VP pick has some Clinton supporters, as Senator Obama might say, hysterical.

Doyle is an extremely controversial figure in Clinton circles. Her departure from her role as campaign manager for Hillary was contentious, and Clinton insiders suspect her as a possible source for the recent, unfavorable Vanity Fair article about President Bill Clinton. Some loyalists think she is shopping a "McClellan" with various publishers.

Some supporters are calling it a "slap in the face" or much, much worse. Conventional wisdom is forming that this is a signal that the Dream Ticket will remain just that, a fantasy.

Read on for some Clinton supporters' quotes and Hillary's response.

What Matters to John McCain?

MATT LAUER: "If it's working Senator, do you now have a better estimate of when American forces can come home from Iraq?"

SEN. MCCAIN: "No, but that's not too important. What's important is the casualties in Iraq, Americans are in South Korea, Americans are in Japan, American troops are in Germany. That's all fine. American casualties and the ability to withdraw; we will be able to withdraw. General Petraeus is going to tell us in July when he thinks we are. But the key to it is that we don't want any more Americans in harm's way. That way, they will be safe, and serve our country and come home with honor and victory, not in defeat, which is what Senator Obama's proposal would have done. I'm proud of them. And they're doing a great job. And we are succeeding and it's fascinating that Senator Obama still doesn't realize that."

That is the exchange that has the blogs buzzing today. The Obama campaign is in full assault mode over the remarks, made by Senator McCain this morning on the Today Show. Senator Kerry, still remarkably the campaign's front man on military issues, said that Senator McCain's reply was "unbelievably out of touch and inconsistent with the needs of Americans and particularly the families of troops who are over there." Just to emphasize part of what Senator Kerry thinks the troops families don't need or want: "But the key to it is that we don't want any more Americans in harm's way." Yes, I'm sure wives and mothers everywhere are perplexed by such an out of touch assertion.

Other Democrats were quick to jump on board. Harry Reid said "McCain's statement today that withdrawing troops doesn't matter is a crystal clear indicator that he just doesn't get the grave national-security consequences of staying the course -- Osama bin Laden is freely plotting attacks, our efforts in Afghanistan are undermanned, and our military readiness has been dangerously diminished. We need a smart change in strategy to make America more secure, not a commitment to indefinitely keep our troops in an intractable civil war."

Of course, it's simply not accurate to say that Senator McCain said withdrawing troops doesn't matter.

Obama and the RNC on Rezko

By Caleb Howe

Jun 4th 2008 8:55PM

Barack Obama and the RNC have each released statements on today's conviction of Antoin 'Tony' Rezko by a Chicago jury.

The RNC pulled no punches:

"On the day Barack Obama hoped to unite his party after wheezing over the finish line and claiming the Democrat nomination, a jury in his hometown of Chicago convicted his longtime friend and fundraiser Tony Rezko of multiple felonies. This is further proof that Obama's high-flying rhetoric is just that and in no way represents the kind of change our nation demands. Today's verdict and Obama's friendship with Rezko raise serious questions about whether he has the judgment to serve as president."

Senator Obama's remarks recall similar statements he's made recently about certain other figures in his life, saying this is not the man he knew:

"I'm saddened by today's verdict. This isn't the Tony Rezko I knew, but now he has been convicted by a jury on multiple charges that once again shine a spotlight on the need for reform. I encourage the General Assembly to take whatever steps are necessary to prevent these kinds of abuses in the future." - Senator Barack Obama

Senator Obama does seem to have trouble with people he knows not being the people he knew. Breakdown of the counts against Rezko, and what it has to do with Senator Obama, after the jump.
