<blockquote>
<p>You think I ought to be happy that there's conservatism out there. I'm not happy my own party wants to get rid of it. I'm mad that my own party wants to cast conservatism aside. I know there's plenty of conservatism out there. That's the source of the frustration. But conservatism by itself cannot move things. It needs a political party. In our political structure, it is parties that get things done. The Republican Party was the home of conservatism, and it still is. But the people that run the Republican Party right now are trying to get rid of it. And it's a death wish. It is an absolute death wish. </p>
</blockquote>
<p>Rush is not being prophetic, he is just stating the facts on the ground. The current Republican leadership is pushing the panic button because they keep <a href="http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/05/gop_stunned_by_loss_in_mississ.html"><font color="#669966">losing fights they shouldn't</font></a>. Why? Probably because the GOP (at least at the top) no longer stands for conservative values on a whole host of issues, including spending, amnesty for illegal immigrants, punishing American industry for global warming. And today we have <a href="http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NmY4YTA1OGMxNGNlMzc2M2RjMmRlMTE1ZGQzMmUyOTA="><font color="#669966">corporate welfare for rich farmers</font></a>.</p>
<br />
<p>Rank and file conservatives are fed up, because they know that McCain is at best condescending to them, and at worst, actively conspiring to render them irrelevant to the political process. See this from <a href="http://www.nicedoggie.net/2008/?p=776#comment-18302"><font color="#669966">Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler</font></a>.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>First off, I understand "compromise", I also understand "give and take" and I know full well that sometimes you have to compromise to get some of what you want. But voting for McCain isn't "compromise", its proper name is "abject surrender." </p>
<br />
<p>What's in it for me? The answer is "nothing." </p>
<p>At some point, you have to say "stop! No further!" The thing is, we should've done that a long time ago, but instead we kept reinforcing bad behavior by rewarding it. I don't know what kind of magical, wishful thinking it is that makes people think that rewarding scum for drifting to the left is going to one day, miraculously, make them turn around and drift the other way. I don't know what the proper name for it is, but I'm certain that the word "pathological" is part of it.</p>
</blockquote><p>So what is to be done? I'm not sure, but I've been thinking and one conclusion I know is that conservatives cannot surrender their agenda to McCain. Leadership for conservatives should form from and within the conservative GOP delegation, and they need to do an end run around the GOP leadership. </p>
<br />
<p>What they need to do, and do without delay is to form an opposition party to John McCain and declare that they will oppose John McCain where he differs from them on spending, on global warming, on amnesty, on drilling in ANWR, etc. They should also, of course, say that they will work with McCain on judges, on fighting terrorists, etc. But the primary need is to serve as a rallying point to roust and energize the dormant and fleeing conservative base. </p>
<br />
<p>McCain won't like it, but phooey on him. Let him triangulate to the center as he so loves to do. The GOP has some congressional delegates to save. I realize that this is drastic and unheard of, to actively campaign against your own presidential nominee, but the GOP is up against a wall. Time for them to act like they understand that. Otherwise they can go back to the minority status they enjoyed so much in the seventies.</p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/conservatives-deserting-the-gop/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1195957/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/conservatives-deserting-the-gop/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/conservatives-deserting-the-gop/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><dc:creator>Dave</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-14T21:33:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>'Obama Show Us Your Flag' - New Local GOP Video</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/obama-show-us-your-flag-new-local-gop-video/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/obama-show-us-your-flag-new-local-gop-video/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/obama-show-us-your-flag-new-local-gop-video/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/barack-obama/" rel="tag">Barack Obama</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/ads/" rel="tag">Ads</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/2008-president/" rel="tag">2008 President</a></p><p>As <strong>Barack Obama</strong> visits Michigan, and gets the endorsement of <strong>John Edwards</strong>, a local GOP county Party (Kent) in Grand Rapids, MI released a video ad framing Obama. The witness retrieved the documentbefore the authorities arrived, but spent the dollar bill on a Lotto ticket. <br /><br />What follows is the content of that document, a news article entitled:</em> <br /><br /><strong>President Kerry to Run For 2nd Term</strong> <br /><br />May 14 - 2008 With yesterday's win in the West Virginia Democratic Primary, President John Kerry has all but sewn up his party's nomination to seek a second term.<script type="text/javascript"> var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Vice President Clinton had appeared to be coasting to victory, on the strength of her support among black voters and non-French Americans. Her campaign, however, was derailed by media inquiries into her claim to have won 3 Purple Hearts and a Silver Star while touring Bosnia with the USO. <br /><br />President Kerry can now turn his attention to his general election opponents, Jeb Bush and Joseph Liebermann. Kerry has yet to select a running mate, but former VP John Edwards has already quashed rumors of a reconciliation, and current VP Hillary Clinton is busy lobbying prominent mathmeticians to recalculate the primary vote in her favor. Illinois Senator Barack Obama is on the short list, but many suspect he is still bitter about being tased at a Kerry campaign event. Kerry is expected to offer the post to New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. <br /><br />This primary race has been unusual in a number of ways. An incumbent President rarely faces challengers from his own party, let alone his own Vice President and former VP. President Kerry's political capital, however, has taken some major hits since his election in 2004, even beyond the Republicans' uninterrupted impeachment effort that began on February 3, 2004. <br /><br />Hopes for Kerry's presidency were high following his inauguration, as many saw, in Kerry, a strong centrist answer to the Bush administration's polarizing brand of politics. <br /><br />The honeymoon was over quickly, as this exchange from Kerry's first Presidential press conference attests: <blockquote>President Kerry: Sorry for the delay, I was in the rest room... <br /><br />Jeff Gannon:Wait, so you were in the bathroom before you were out of it? Which is it, Mr. President? <br /><br />President Kerry: Well, you se, Jeff, events which occur sequentially rather than concurrently can often lead to this kind of...</blockquote>The press took Kerry to task frequently, providing valuable oversight and ensuring that Kerry did not unneccesarily end the US' occupation of Iraq. On one Presidential visit, Kerry rescued 2 wounded G.I.'s from a firefight, carrying them to safety on his shoulders, and the press quickly joined the debate among Republicans as to whether this constituted "cutting and running." <br /><br />After Kerry's first attempt at a drawdown of troops, several reports of terrorist threats were leaked to the press. The public, frightened and confused, stood by as congressional Republicans, aided by the so-called Blue Dog Democrats, passed legislation establishing Congressional control over the occupation. Authored in amicus by George W. Bush, the "Fytin' 'em Over There Act of 2005" (FEOTA) passed the House and the Senate by a veto-proof majority. <br /><br />Unable to get any of his agenda enacted, President Kerry took the Democrats into the 2006 mid-term election with just a single legislative accomplishment, a .30 per hour increase to the Federal Minimum wage. The measure passed when Kerry agreed to amendments eliminating overtime pay and introducing the "Jesus Dollar." <br /><br />The Democrats were routed in the mid-terms, with the lone bright spot being the election to the Senate of Detroit Mayor Since then, the Republicans have enjoyed a veto-proof majority in both Houses of Congress, and have stalled every one of Kerry's judicial appointments. <br /><br />Public dissatisfaction with Kerry is outstripped only by their outrage at the Republican-controlled Congress' ongoing effort to privatize police and fire departments. <br /><br />The Democrats are hopeful about Kerry's chances in November. Despite his low approval ratings, he remains in a virtual tie with Bush and the upstart independent candidacy of Texas Congressman Ron Paul. Many analysts expect the popularity of Kerry's eventual running mate, Eliot Spitzer, to put him over the top.<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/president-kerry-to-run-for-2nd-term/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1195721/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/president-kerry-to-run-for-2nd-term/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/president-kerry-to-run-for-2nd-term/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>john kerry</category><category>JohnKerry</category><dc:creator>Tommy Christopher</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-14T16:50:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>John Edwards Endorses Barack Obama</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/edwards-to-endorse-obama-at-7pm/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/edwards-to-endorse-obama-at-7pm/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/edwards-to-endorse-obama-at-7pm/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/democrats/" rel="tag">Democrats</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/barack-obama/" rel="tag">Barack Obama</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/breaking-news/" rel="tag">Breaking News</a></p><img width="269" height="355" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/81028859.jpg" id="img1" alt="" /> Political Machine contributor and Time Magazine blogger <strong><a href="http://thepage.time.com/2008/05/14/ready-to-choose/">Mark Halperin</a></strong> had an inkling. <center><br /><object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3Vycxh1oSUo&amp;hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3Vycxh1oSUo&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object></center><p> </p>
<p>The script is simple, and the ad is short and to the point. Save for a volume problem on the Carter clip, it's an effective ad. Comparing to Carter is a no-brainer in this instance. The windfall profit tax is a punishment on "Big Oil" for alleged profiteering, a campaign promise that appeals to bitterness and resentment rather than hope and change. Unfortunately for the consumer, the reality is the policy proved to be <a href="http://www.reason.com/news/show/126023.html">a complete failure</a>. The ad points out that dependence on foreign oil <strong>increased</strong> as a result of Carter's policy. So in summary: good for the Hamas's of the world, not so much the Hummers.</p>
<br />
<p>It's a good time for the RNC to make the Carter connection. His failed Hamas visit caps a career of failures, and has him fresh on people's minds. Plus, there are a lot of similarities to touch on. Their careers took similar paths. Carter was attacked on his inexperience and praised for intangibles. His was a campaign of change and hope: change from Republican leadership, hope for a more trustworthy government.</p>
<br />
<p>The Jimmy Carter comparison is almost certainly going to be part of the General Election campaigning. I would expect this to be only the first ad along those lines.</p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/new-rnc-ad-obama-is-carter-ii/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1195617/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/new-rnc-ad-obama-is-carter-ii/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/new-rnc-ad-obama-is-carter-ii/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><dc:creator>Caleb Howe</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-14T14:45:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>Clinton Meets With High $ Rollers Today</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-meets-with-high-rollers-today/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-meets-with-high-rollers-today/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-meets-with-high-rollers-today/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/hillary-clinton/" rel="tag">Hillary Clinton</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/democrats/" rel="tag">Democrats</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/barack-obama/" rel="tag">Barack Obama</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/breaking-news/" rel="tag">Breaking News</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/2008-president/" rel="tag">2008 President</a></p>Hillary Clinton will be meeting with 45 to 50 of her top financial supporters from around the country today to ask them to "reenergize" their fundraising efforts to make sure the New York senator stays competitive against Barack Obama over the next three weeks.<br /><br />"Financially, we're in very good shape," Clinton Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe told reporters today during a press conference call. And why would donors continue to shake the trees even as the math adds up for Obama and not Clinton?<br />Her West Virginia win shows their money is being put to good use, Wolfson responded.<br /><br />"I think our donors realize Senator Clinton has a shot at this. They're not oblivious to the news that they read and see but they have stuck with us and my sense is they're going to continue to be generous and supportive going forward."<br /> <br /> Wolfson also noted that Clinton is ahead of Obama in the popular vote (if you count Michigan and Florida), but acknowledged she won't do as well in Kentucky - or Oregon, for that matter, where they acknowledged Obama is the favorite - as she did in West Virginia. "We had a night that exceeded even our own expectations."<br /> <br /> And in case anyone was wondering if Clinton is continuing with her campaign - despite the odds - to position herself for the veep spot, her spokesman said "absolutely not."<br /> <br /> "I think any talk about the vice presidency in any direction are premature," he said. "We are not focused on being anybody's vice president or choosing a vice president, we are focused on winning the nomination."<br /> <br /> But, if Obama is the nominee in the end, Clinton will "work hard" to get him elected to the White House. <br /> <br /> Earlier, former President Clinton Chief of Staff Leon Panetta said Clinton should continue to fight until June, when she can reevaluate based on what needs to be done to unify the party. "Politics, like baseball, is not decided until the last out in the ninth inning. We're in the bottom of the ninth inning of this race and I think she's gonna play it out until the end and I think she should."<br /><br />Clinton picked up the support of one more superdelegate today, Vicky Harwell, president of the Tennessee Federation of Democratic Women. The presidential hopeful is meeting with others today. Deputy spokesman Phil Singer said it's the campaign's hopes that superdelegates - even those who have voiced support for Obama - may look at Clinton's wide West Virginia victory margins, and her wins in other swing states, and realize she's the best candidate to beat John McCain in the general election. <br /><br />"They're going to come out and say 'Senator Clinton' is our best bet,'" Singer said. <br /><br />As to whether Clinton's got a tall mountain to climb to reach the magic number - now 2026 with last night's special election in Mississippi, which sent another Democrat to the House (or, rather, Clinton's new number of 2210, with Michigan and Florida?) - Singer quips: "Well, we've got good walking shoes."<br /><br /><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-meets-with-high-rollers-today/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1195498/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-meets-with-high-rollers-today/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-meets-with-high-rollers-today/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><dc:creator>Liza Porteus Viana</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-14T14:09:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>Clinton Vows to Press Campaign</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-vows-to-press-campaign/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-vows-to-press-campaign/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-vows-to-press-campaign/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/hillary-clinton/" rel="tag">Hillary Clinton</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/barack-obama/" rel="tag">Barack Obama</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/featured-stories/" rel="tag">Featured Stories</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/primaries/" rel="tag">Primaries</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/2008-president/" rel="tag">2008 President</a></p><img alt="" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/clinton_west_virginia.jpg" align="right" vspace="4" border="1" />Sen. Hillary Clinton put recent media speculation that she may drop out of the Democratic primary race to rest with her victory speech following the Mountain State primary last night. More properly put, the voters of West Virginia did. Lopsided is not strong enough of a word to describe the magnitude of Clinton's win in West Virginia. She bested her rival Sen. Barack Obama, by 41 percentage points, 67-26. The rout was <a href="http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/#WVDEM">complete</a>. Clinton won every single county in the state, most by more than 20 points, as Obama was only able to break above 40% in one county. Clinton won men and women, churchgoers and non-churchgoers, college educated and non-college educated, rich and poor, all by large margins.<br /><br />At her campaign victory rally, Clinton delivered her victory <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/05/13/transcript_of_hillary_clintons_remarks/">address</a> in understated tones, but the implications in her rhetoric came through loud and clear. She still believes that she is the stronger candidate to face Sen. John McCain in the general election, and she intends to continue campaigning until the primary calendar is complete.<br /><blockquote><em>"There are some who have wanted to cut this race short. They say, "give up, it's too hard, the mountain is too high," but here in West Virginia, you know a thing or two about rough roads to the top of the mountain. We know from the Bible that faith can move mountains and, my friends, the faith of the Mountain State has moved me. I am more determined than ever to carry on this campaign until everyone has had a chance to make their voices heard."</em></blockquote><br /><br />Clinton hit on every one of her campaign's rationales for remaining in the race, and for claiming the status of stronger general election candidate. The Clinton campaign has been pitching to the Democratic superdelegates her strength in the expected general election swing states. She has won Ohio, Pennsylvania, and the disputed states of Michigan and Florida. Sen. Clinton told the faithful last night that despite trailing in the delegate count, she has amassed an impressive number of votes, and an important list of states.<br /><blockquote><em>"I am in this race because I believe I am the strongest candidate - the strongest candidate to lead our party in November of 2008 and the strongest president to lead our nation starting in January of 2009. I can win this nomination if you decide I should, and I can lead this party to victory in the general election if you lead me to victory now.<br /><br />The choice falls to all of you, and I don't envy you. I deeply admire Senator Obama, but I believe our case, a case West Virginia has helped to make, our case is stronger. Together, we have won millions and millions of votes - by the time tonight is over, probably 17 million, close to it. We've won them in states that we must be prepared and ready to win in November - Pennsylvania and Ohio, Arkansas and New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Michigan, Florida, and now West Virginia. It is a fact that no Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia.<br /><br />The bottom line is this - the White House is one in the swing states and I am winning the swing states.</em></blockquote>On her appeal to rural, working-class democrats, and by implication Obama's growing trouble winning the important voting bloc, Clinton stressed her connection to the voters who have largely fueled her post-Super Tuesday string of victories.<br /><blockquote><em>I'm in it because of the people that I have worked for my entire life and the people I meet along the campaign trail, people who need someone who fights for them because they're fighting so hard every single day, the people who drive for miles to show their support, who come with the home-made sign, who raise money by skipping those dinners out, who have stood fast and stood strong. I'm in this race for the millions of Americans who know that we can do better in our country, for the nurse on her second shift, for the worker on the line, for the waitress on her feet, for the small business owner, the farmer, the teacher, the coal miner, the trucker, the soldier, the veteran, the college student.<br /><br />All of the hardworking men and women who defy the odds to build a better life for themselves and their children. You will never be counted out, and I won't either. You will never quit, and I won't, either.</em></blockquote>She asked voters to think hard about the election season and to consider, "how we will win in November." That was perhaps a subtle reference to her campaign operatives' contention that Democrats can't win in the general election with Obama's coalition of the educated, liberals, and African-Americans.<br /><br />Although Obama did not compete strongly in West Virgina, even choosing to forgo a concession speech, the loss is potentially very damaging to his campaign. It is difficult for any candidate to explain away a 41-point loss, let alone the presumptive nominee of the party. Mike Huckabee came close but did not win a state from John McCain after Super Tuesday crowned McCain as the eventual Republican nominee. Clinton is set to score two straight. Polls show Clinton poised for another double-digit victory over Obama in next week's Kentucky primary. Obama will likely next win Oregon, but that may only serve to cement the notion that his campaign plays well to the educated elites on the coasts and struggles with Democrats in the nation's mid section. Clinton sees no reason to challenge that perception, not as long as she keeps winning.<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-vows-to-press-campaign/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1195484/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-vows-to-press-campaign/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/clinton-vows-to-press-campaign/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>2008 presidential</category><category>2008Presidential</category><category>Clinton</category><category>Democrats</category><category>Obama</category><category>primaries</category><category>West Virginia</category><category>WestVirginia</category><dc:creator>Mark Impomeni</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-14T13:30:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>Face Off: Should Hillary Drop Out?</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/face-off-should-hillary-drop-out/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/face-off-should-hillary-drop-out/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/face-off-should-hillary-drop-out/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/hillary-clinton/" rel="tag">Hillary Clinton</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/democrats/" rel="tag">Democrats</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/featured-stories/" rel="tag">Featured Stories</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/2008-president/" rel="tag">2008 President</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/face-off/" rel="tag">Face Off</a></p><div align="center"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/hillary_fone.jpg" alt="" /><br /></div>

This time, it happened in <a href="http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/05/democrats_win_mississippi_spec.html">Mississippi</a>, where <strong>Travis Childers</strong> beat <strong>Greg Davis</strong> to send a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time since 1994. Bush easily carried this district in 2000 and 2004, but that was before his popularity numbers plummeted. <br /><br />Davis and the RNCC had run negative <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv4qFO2eEJY&amp;eurl=http://www.dailykos.com/">ads</a> featuring the <strong>Reverend Wright</strong> and <strong>Barack Obama</strong> in an attempt to solidify white support. For the second time this year, the tactic failed. <br /><br />In the towering wake of yet another defeat in a contest in which the GOP poured a great deal of resources, NRCC chairman <strong>Tom Cole</strong> fired off an <a href="http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/05/cole_be_warned_republicans.php">S.O.S.</a> to any Republicans who'll listen:<br /><blockquote><br />"...the political environment is such that voters remain pessimistic about the direction of the country and the Republican Party in general. Therefore, Republicans must undertake bold efforts to define a forward looking agenda that offers the kind of positive change voters are looking for."<br /></blockquote><br />In other words, the GOP needs to re-invent itself. Come up with some catchy, forward-looking buzzwords. Maybe even tinker with a proposal or two. All that negative change just isn't working out. Go figure.<br /><br /><strong>UPDATE</strong>: You just can't make this stuff up. What has the Republican brain-trust decided on for a new slogan?<br /><br />"<a href="http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/05/14/political-wire-house-gops-change-slogan-not-first-of-its-kind/">The Change You Deserve</a>." <br /><br />Aside from being strikingly similar to Obama's "Change You Can Believe In," the funny thing is that slogan was already adopted by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for their anti-anxiety drug Effexor. Perhaps the GOP can kill two birds with one stone on this one. Pass out Effexor to all their candidates up for re-election, and borrow the slogan as well. Wyeth makes out like bandits and everybody's happy! Or at least until the drug wears off, anyway.<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/dems-win-another-gop-sounds-distress-call/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1195138/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/dems-win-another-gop-sounds-distress-call/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/dems-win-another-gop-sounds-distress-call/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>Barack Obama</category><category>BarackObama</category><category>Democrats</category><category>Dick Cheney</category><category>DickCheney</category><category>Greg Davis</category><category>GregDavis</category><category>House 2008</category><category>House2008</category><category>Jeremiah Wright</category><category>JeremiahWright</category><category>Mississippi</category><category>Republicans</category><category>RNCC</category><category>tom cole</category><category>TomCole</category><category>Travis Childers</category><category>TravisChilders</category><dc:creator>David Knowles</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-14T09:31:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>John McCain Has a Pre-Nup?</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/john-mccain-has-a-pre-nup/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/john-mccain-has-a-pre-nup/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/john-mccain-has-a-pre-nup/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/republicans/" rel="tag">Republicans</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/john-mccain/" rel="tag">John McCain</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/2008-president/" rel="tag">2008 President</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/gay-rights/" rel="tag">Gay Rights</a></p>When I did a story about John McCain's release of his tax returns a few weeks ago, I somehow missed out on the glaring fact that Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain has a prenuptial agreement with second wife Cindy McCain. Well, at least she let him keep his maiden name.<img width="240" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="223" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/cindy2.jpg" /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/5/10/18825/7818/160/513419">From Tfitz </a>on DailyKos:<blockquote>It seems that when his totally hot, totally rich, second wife Cindy said yes to his 'big question', she also let him know that his job wasn't finished until the paperwork was done. This tough bride, whose financials are none of your damn business thank you very much, made Big John sign a prenuptial agreement. How's that again? A possible POTUS with a pre-nup?</blockquote>The article goes on to talk about the implications of the pre-nup:<blockquote>If marriage is sanctioned by God and valid until death does part you cute kids, why go into it with a financial escape clause; a 'golden parachute' of love? Well, the reasons for doing so are obvious and can be fully expressed in two points. Point A: 'This thing may not last and I'll be damned if I'm going to be broken hearted and broke' and Point B: 'I don't really trust this son of a bitch'. In other words, it is all about trust. In other, other words; Cindy McCain doesn't.</blockquote>When I saw this story, aside from the usual guy-talk ribbing, I couldn't really see much of a point to it. I've never cared much for stories of an embarrassing, personal nature. I almost felt a little bad for McCain. But, then, while researching <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/this-page-left-intentionally-blank/">yesterday's story</a>, I realized that McCain had it coming.<script type="text/javascript"> var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www."); document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E")); </script><script type="text/javascript"> var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-3712949-1"); pageTracker._initData(); pageTracker._trackPageview(); </script><br /><br />First off, let me apologize for making a tasteless joke at McCain's expense. Here goes: I'm s-s-s-s...what's this, an attack of the "Fonzies?" Surely a class act like McCain doesn't deserve that kind of offhand ridicule, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/02/19/mccain-why-is-chelsea-clinton-so-ugly/">does he</a>? I mean, this is a defender of <a href="http://johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/95b18512-d5b6-456e-90a2-12028d71df58.htm">Human Dignity</a>.<br /><br />Of course, the key to human dignity, as we all know, is protecting marriage. Oh, I see. McCain's platform has a whole section on Protecting Marriage, that must be where he talks about the need for a pre-nup. Let's take a look:<br /><br /><blockquote>
<p><strong>Protecting Marriage</strong></p>
<p> As president, John McCain would nominate judges who understand that the role of the Court is not to subvert the rights of the people by legislating from the bench. Critical to Constitutional balance is ensuring that, where state and local governments do act to preserve the traditional family, the Courts must not overstep their authority and thwart the Constitutional right of the people to decide this question. </p>
<p> The family represents the foundation of Western Civilization and civil society and John McCain believes the institution of marriage is a union between one man and one woman. It is only this definition that sufficiently recognizes the vital and unique role played by mothers and fathers in the raising of children, and the role of the family in shaping, stabilizing, and strengthening communities and our nation. </p>
<p> As with most issues vital to the preservation and health of civil society, the basic responsibility for preserving and strengthening the family should reside at the level of government closest to the people. In their wisdom, the Founding Fathers reserved for the States the authority and responsibility to protect and strengthen the vital institutions of our civil society. They did so to ensure that the voices of America's families could not be ignored by an indifferent national government or suffocated through filibusters and clever legislative maneuvering in Congress. </p>
</blockquote>Wait, where's the part about protecting his first marriage, or protecting his second wife's inheritance from his greedy little mitts? <br /><br />Of course, he's right. The states should be allowed to deny rights to whomever they see fit, shouldn't they? That certainly is consistent with his <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/04/14/mccain-stood-by-david-duke-in-90-still-does/">views on civil rights</a>.<br /><br />I don't expect any of this to bother Republican voters, but I hope these Democratic crossovers will keep looking deeper into McCain, past the maverick facade and into the deep tissue of his true conservatism.<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/john-mccain-has-a-pre-nup/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1195062/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/john-mccain-has-a-pre-nup/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/john-mccain-has-a-pre-nup/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>Cindy McCain</category><category>CindyMccain</category><category>election</category><category>family values</category><category>FamilyValues</category><category>John McCain</category><category>JohnMccain</category><category>nomination</category><category>prenuptial agreement</category><category>PrenuptialAgreement</category><category>president 2008</category><category>President2008</category><category>religion</category><category>Republicans</category><dc:creator>Tommy Christopher</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-14T09:00:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>Bush in Israel for Anniversary Celebrations</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/bush-in-israel-for-anniversary-celebrations/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/bush-in-israel-for-anniversary-celebrations/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/bush-in-israel-for-anniversary-celebrations/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/president-bush/" rel="tag">President Bush</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/bush-administration/" rel="tag">Bush Administration</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/foreign-policy/" rel="tag">Foreign Policy</a></p><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/bush_israel.jpg" />President Bush <a href="http://news.aol.com/story/_a/bush-opens-mideast-trip-to-mark-israels/n20080514064409990023">arrived</a> in Tel Aviv, Israel this morning for a two-day visit marking Israel's 60th anniversary as a nation. The president was welcomed at the airport by Israeli president Shimon Peres. While in the Middle East, the president will meet with Israeli and Palestinian negotiators to continue his push for a comprehensive peace agreement before he leaves office. He will also meet with Arab allies n Saudi Arabia, and make a stop at Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt for talks with Egypt's, Jordan's, Lebanon's, and Afghanistan's leaders.<br /><br />The president began his visit with high praise for Israel and the close friendship the two countries have always shared.<br /><blockquote><em>"We consider the Holy Land a very special place, and we consider the Israeli people our close friends<br /><br />Our two nations both faced great challenges when they were founded. And our two nations have both relied on the same principles to help us succeed. We built strong democracies to protect the freedoms given to us by an almighty God. [...] and we built an enduring alliance to confront terrorists and tyrants."</em></blockquote>Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert returned the compliments, saying, "America has been there at each and every important crossroad in the life of our young country and stood by us in times of hope and moments of crisis."<br /><br />Bush is the first U.S. President to call for an independent Palestinian state, and his advisers said that he might acknowledge that the Palestinians see Israel's anniversary as a great catastrophe for their people. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley told reporters, "We are going to Israel to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel, and that is a great event. We also recognize that resulted in hardship for many Palestinian people." Talk like that is designed to preserve the United States' role as an "honest broker" in the delicate negotiations between the two sides.<br /><br />Hopes for a final status agreement settling the decades long dispute between Israel and the Palestinian Authority before the end of the year have been fading since the two sides agreed to the time frame for an agreement at the Annapolis peace conference last year. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said last week that reaching a peace agreement on the tight schedule, "might be improbable but it's not impossible." Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist organization that controls the Gaza Strip made its intentions to thwart progress toward a peace deal clear in its statement marking the president's arrival. "No greetings to you, Bush, on our holy land," the spokesman said. "Your people will punish you one day."<br /><br />Middle East peace is a lofty goal that has eluded at least five U.S. presidents since Jimmy Carter. This latest effort by President Bush, though worthy, is likely to end with the same result. Israelis and Palestinians have radically different notions of what a peaceful Holy Land should look like, and resolving those differences, if they can be resolved, will take far longer than one year and far more than well intentioned negotiations.<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/bush-in-israel-for-anniversary-celebrations/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1195066/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/bush-in-israel-for-anniversary-celebrations/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/14/bush-in-israel-for-anniversary-celebrations/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>Bush administration</category><category>BushAdministration</category><category>Egypt</category><category>Ehud Olmert</category><category>EhudOlmert</category><category>foreign policy</category><category>ForeignPolicy</category><category>Israel</category><category>Middle East</category><category>MiddleEast</category><category>Palestinians</category><category>peace process</category><category>PeaceProcess</category><category>President Bush</category><category>PresidentBush</category><category>Shimon Peres</category><category>ShimonPeres</category><dc:creator>Mark Impomeni</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-14T07:30:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>Vote for Miss Ron Paul!</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/vote-for-miss-ron-paul/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/vote-for-miss-ron-paul/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/vote-for-miss-ron-paul/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/ron-paul/" rel="tag">Ron Paul</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/lolection/" rel="tag">LOLection</a></p><p><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="left" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/ronpaulrevo.jpg" /></p>
<p>Here's one for our Ron Paul readers. I see you all are back and a welcome sight it is - really. No snark. We missed you.</p>
<br />
<p>The Web site <a href="http://www.missronpaul.com/" target="_blank">Miss Ron Paul</a> is doing it's latest contest for Miss Ron Paul. Apparently I'm late to this - they've been doing it for awhile. Congratulations to the past winners! So vote early and vote often. This round ends May 31. Contestant number 3 looks to be the presumptive winner. I wonder why.</p>
<br />
<p>I understand from my reading my colleague David Knowles' <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/12/ron-pauls-revenge/" target="_blank">post</a> that Congressman Paul might have a little surprise for the convention in September. I'm expecting to be there, so I'll try and meet up with Paul supporters. You will definitely be better company that the McCain supporters, I'm sure.</p>
<br />
<p>Oh, and I promised this great group of kids that I met after the Philly Democratic debate in April that I'd post their picture the next time I did a post on Ron Paul.</p>

As of right now she's leading 64-29%. Ouch! With numbers like that, this is the last time that West Virginia sees Barack Obama for, like, ever.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Hillary's speech was fairly unspectacular as usual, but in the first few paragraphs, I think she managed to squeeze in just about every West Virginia cliche about mountain people, going to the mountain, etc. Cringe worthy.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>And then she started in with a rousing defense of why she's still in the race (remember, when you're explaining, you're losing) But she does have some valid points. She is the "strongest candidate" based on her ability to win swing states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. That it has been since 1916 or so since a Democrat won without West Virginia. That's true, too, but it probably has more to do with West Virginia being a marginally leaning state, and Al Gore came within 300 votes of busting that record.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Anyway, it didn't sound to me like she was quitting, or even thinking about quitting. In her quest to stay in the race, she also received some unexpected support from Obama who stated that the race wasn't over yet. Hillary should send him a thank you card.</p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/hillary-doesnt-sound-like-shes-quitting/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1194807/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/hillary-doesnt-sound-like-shes-quitting/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/hillary-doesnt-sound-like-shes-quitting/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>Barack Obama</category><category>BarackObama</category><category>Democrats</category><category>election</category><category>Hillary Clinton</category><category>HillaryClinton</category><category>president 2008</category><category>President2008</category><category>primaries</category><category>results</category><category>West Virginia</category><category>WestVirginia</category><category>withdrawal</category><dc:creator>Dave</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-13T22:01:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>One Veto Threatened, One Threat Withdrawn</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/one-veto-threatened-one-threat-withdrawn/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/one-veto-threatened-one-threat-withdrawn/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/one-veto-threatened-one-threat-withdrawn/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/president-bush/" rel="tag">President Bush</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/bush-administration/" rel="tag">Bush Administration</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/breaking-news/" rel="tag">Breaking News</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/economy/" rel="tag">Economy</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/budget/" rel="tag">Budget</a></p><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/bush_veto.jpg" alt="" />The White House issued a <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2008/05/20080513-2.html">statement</a> late today saying that President Bush has decided to veto the 2008 Farm Bill if it makes it to his desk in its current form and recommended that Congress pass a one-year extension of current farm policy to bridge the gap until the next Congress and Administration can consider another bill. Almost at the same, the White House said that the president would <a href="http://video1.washingtontimes.com/potusnotes/2008/05/bush_reverses_opposition_to_su.html">withdraw</a> his threat to veto an bill containing a provision that would stop the government from filling the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve in a bid to increase oil supply on the world market and lower prices. Mr. Bush had earlier said that the provision would have no impact on gas prices.<br /><br />On the Farm Bill, the president said that he was "deeply disappointed" in the compromise legislation reached by the House and Senate. He cited high food prices and increasing farming incomes as his reasons for rejecting the package of incentives and subsidies for the nation's family and commercial farmers.<br /><blockquote><em>Today's farm economy is very strong and that is something to celebrate. It is also an appropriate time to better target subsidies and put forth real reform. Farm income is expected to exceed the 10-year average by fifty percent this year, yet Congress' bill asks American taxpayers to subsidize the incomes of married farmers who earn $1.5 million per year. I believe doing so at a time of record farm income is irresponsible and jeopardizes America's support for necessary farm programs.</em></blockquote>But any farm bill is popular legislation in Congress, more so in an election year, and the president's veto would seem to be an exercise in futility. Congress will almost certainly vote to override the president quickly.<br /><br />It was the realization that a veto would be overridden that prompted the White House to reverse course on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Senate Republicans voted overwhelmingly for the underlying bill containing the controversial provision. Rather than be perceived to be holding back potential price lowering measure, the White House decided that discretion was the better part of valor. Still, the Administration maintains, correctly, that stopping shipments to the reserve will not have much of an impact at the gas pump.<br /><blockquote><em>"[The president] maintains his view that halting the filling of the reserve will not have a meaningful impact on oil prices or gas prices. The Senate made clear today that they want to attempt that measure. The president hopes that this vote on the [Strategic Petroleum Reserve] will not distract members of Congress from the things they could be doing that would actually make a difference for the future, like opening up new domestic supply in an environmentally sensitive way in ANWR [Arctic National Wildlife Refuge] and the OCS [Outer Continental Shelf]."</em></blockquote>The veto threat for the Farm Bill is in keeping with the Administration's last-year push to reestablish the president's image as a fiscally responsible steward of government. The president's decision to sign the 2002 Farm Bill drew waves of criticism from conservatives upset at what they viewed as an unnecessary Federal spending boondoggle. That was before the skyrocketing prices for commodities made the necessity of continuing Federal subsidies for farmers even less attractive to them. Ending shipments of oil to the reserve actually saves the government money, so it too can be viewed, optimistically, as a fiscally responsible decision. President Bush has few supporters left, and he appears bound and determined to go out of office with as many of them on his side as he can.<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/one-veto-threatened-one-threat-withdrawn/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1194805/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/one-veto-threatened-one-threat-withdrawn/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/one-veto-threatened-one-threat-withdrawn/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>budget</category><category>Bush administration</category><category>BushAdministration</category><category>Congress</category><category>economy</category><category>farm bill</category><category>FarmBill</category><category>food prices</category><category>FoodPrices</category><category>oil prices</category><category>OilPrices</category><category>petroleum reserve</category><category>PetroleumReserve</category><category>politics</category><category>President Bush</category><category>PresidentBush</category><category>veto</category><dc:creator>Mark Impomeni</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-13T22:00:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>Obama Preens; Lefty Blogosphere Cringes</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/obama-preens-lefty-blogosphere-cringes/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/obama-preens-lefty-blogosphere-cringes/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/obama-preens-lefty-blogosphere-cringes/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/barack-obama/" rel="tag">Barack Obama</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/2008-president/" rel="tag">2008 President</a></p><p>I don't think it's that big of a deal, but some <a href="http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/5/13/184251/009">lefty blogs</a> are worried that this behavior is a little too Bushlike for them.</p>

<p>The Obama campaign doesn't talk about it much, but will admit when pressed that they started this process knowing that there was a small, but not insignificant, segment of the population that just will not vote for an African-American.</p>
<br />
<p>Running just below the surface in the campaign and in the media, is the undercurrent of racism still to be found in pockets around the country - rural, urban and suburban. While Senator Obama's message is inclusive and pan-racial, the workers on the ground have felt the sting that the campaign itself does not wish to highlight and the media has mostly ignored.</p>
<br />
<p>The <em><a target="_blank" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/12/AR2008051203014_pf.html">Washington Post</a></em> today has some harsh stories of field workers, phone bankers and surrogates having doors slammed in their faces, being called the most derogatory of racial terms and physically threatened.</p>
<br />
<p> </p>
<blockquote>Victoria Switzer, a retired social studies teacher, was on phone-bank duty one night during the Pennsylvania primary campaign. One night was all she could take: "It wasn't pretty." She made 60 calls to prospective voters in Susquehanna County, her home county, which is 98 percent white. The responses were dispiriting. One caller, Switzer remembers, said he couldn't possibly vote for Obama and concluded: "Hang that darky from a tree!"
<p> </p>
<br />
<p>Documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy, the daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, said she, too, came across "a lot of racism" when campaigning for Obama in Pennsylvania. One Pittsburgh union organizer told her he would not vote for Obama because he is black, and a white voter, she said, offered this frank reason for not backing Obama: "White people look out for white people, and black people look out for black people."</p>
</blockquote>
<p> </p>
<br />
<p> </p><br />
<p>The Obama campaign responded to questions about racial issues by saying, "After campaigning for 15 months in nearly all 50 states, Barack Obama and our entire campaign have been nothing but impressed and encouraged by the core decency, kindness, and generosity of Americans from all walks of life. The last year has only reinforced Senator Obama's view that this country is not as divided as our politics suggest."</p>
<br />
<p>But that doesn't do too much for the spirit of some supporters not even old enough to vote yet themselves and not used to the epithets thown their way like their parents and grandparents experienced.</p>
<br />
<p> </p>
<blockquote>Campaign field work can be an exercise in confronting the fears, anxieties and prejudices of voters. Veterans of the civil rights movement know what this feels like, as do those who have been involved in battles over busing, immigration or abortion. But through the Obama campaign, some young people are having their first experience joining a cause and meeting cruel reaction.
<p> </p>
<br />
<p>On Election Day in Kokomo, a group of black high school students were holding up Obama signs along U.S. 31, a major thoroughfare. As drivers cruised by, a number of them rolled down their windows and yelled out a common racial slur for African Americans, according to Obama campaign staffers.</p>
</blockquote><br />
<p>The media has been very quiet about the campaign headquarters that have been vandalized and defaced by racist grafitti. The campaign honchos would like to keep it that way. After a recent break-in at a campaign office in Vincennes, IN, volunteer Ray McCormick took some pictures of the damage. When he asked the campaign about distributing his pictures to the press, he was asked not to make a big deal of it. McCormick did as they asked, but told the WaPo, "The pictures represent what we are breaking through and overcoming".</p>

As logical fallacies go, it's pretty innocuous, even comical. I picture an apoplectic bureaucrat somewhere screaming into the face of the 987th person to come to the window and ask, "What's wrong with my Driver's Manual?" <br /> <img width="137" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="149" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/blank-mccain.jpg" alt="" /><br /> A far more dangerous logical fallacy is all the rage now, and it has a lot to do with intentionally blank pages. The press has given John McCain a free ride for years now, and as a result, 45% of Hillary Clinton's supporters have something like this to say: <blockquote>If Hillary Clinton doesn't win, I will vote for McCain in November.</blockquote>It is a happy accident that David Knowles <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/hillary-or-mccain-never-obama/">wrote about this</a> phenomenon earlier today, unbeknownst to me. This serves as an excellent companion to that story.<br /><br />Now, I understand disappointment, and a certain amount of bitterness toward an opponent in a hard-fought contest, but this makes about as much sense as rooting for the Red Sox if the Yankees lose, unless you're Rudy Giuliani, or saying that if you can't have your favorite flavor of ice cream, you'll take cyanide instead. <br /> <br /> My theory is that many of these voters have the same general idea about McCain that the rest of America does, that he's a free-thinking, maverick moderate who even leans to the left here and there, a great down-the-middle choice. Let's test that theory out. This poll is for Hillary Clinton supporters only. Take it, and then read on.<br /><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/this-page-left-intentionally-blank/#poll14116">View Poll</a></p><br /><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/this-page-left-intentionally-blank/#poll14120">View Poll</a></p><script type="text/javascript"> var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www."); document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E")); </script><script type="text/javascript"> var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-3712949-1"); pageTracker._initData(); pageTracker._trackPageview(); </script><br /> Now, let's try to fill in some of those blank pages. First of all, I must make two basic assumptions: - There are many substantive reasons for your support of Hillary Clinton - Your decision to support McCain is predicated on a belief that he is not that divergent from Hillary Clinton where it counts, and even leans liberal in some cases. <br /> <br /> Let's see how well McCain and Hillary stack up. <br /> <br /><u><strong> Reproductive Choice</strong></u> <br /> <br /><em> Hillary:</em> A woman's right to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy is a core Democratic value, and is such a linchpin in Hillary's campaign that she <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/01/15/hillary-throws-choice-stones-at-obama/">attacked Obama</a> on choice back in January, despite the fact that the Illinois Senator is absolutely pro-choice. <br /> <br /><em> McCain</em>: Many Republicans try to mask their extremism on choice for the general election by using coded language like, "I will appoint strict constructionist judges to the Supreme Court." <br /> <br /> Rudy Giuliani is a good example of this. Guys like that are a roll of the dice. Reagan, for example, disapointed a lot of conservatives with his appointments. <br /> <br /> McCain, however, tattoos his extremism all over his platform, <a href="http://johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/95b18512-d5b6-456e-90a2-12028d71df58.htm">saying</a>: <blockquote>John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench. Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. </blockquote>I've seen people say, "I'll take my chances on Roe." You do realize these are lifetime appointmentsm don't you?<br /><br />Can you go from being pro-choice to inviting John McCain under the stirrups to peer into your uterus and decide what you and your doctor can and can't do?<br /><br /><u><strong>The Economy</strong></u><br /><em><br />Hillary</em>: Proposes taxe relief for the middle class and repealing the Bush tax cuts on the most wealthy Americans. She also wants to end the billions of dollars being spent each month in Iraq, which the current administration doesn't even include in its budget.<br /><br /><em>McCain</em>: An admitted novice on economics, it shows. His idea of tax relief for the "middle class" is to repeal the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_Minimum_Tax#AMT_Taxable_Income_.28AMTI.29">Alternative Minimum Tax,</a> which only affects people making more than $150,000.00 a year. <br /><br />After speaking out passionately against George Bush's tax cuts, he voted to pass them, and now wants to make them permanent.<br /><br />Then, of course, there's Iraq. He claims he was misquoted on the "100 years" thing, but <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/04/08/mccain-learning-curve-100-weeks-too-long/">his explanation </a>is no better. <br /><br /><u><strong>Healthcare</strong></u><br /><em><br />Hillary:</em> <a href="http://hillaryclinton.com/issues/healthcare/summary.aspx">Plans to provide</a> universal health insurance to all, while maintaining incentives for employers to continue to provide insurance to employees making less than a quarter-mil a year.<br /><em><br />McCain</em>: <a href="http://johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/19ba2f1c-c03f-4ac2-8cd5-5cf2edb527cf.htm">Plans to take</a> away tax incentives to employers who provide healthcare to employees, to the tune of about $12,000 a year, in order to pay for a $5000.00 tax credit with which to purchase a more expensive, less comprehensive plan on the individual market. He hopes that costs will be controlled by the invisible hand of the market. I feel that hand every time I go to the gas station, and I want to turn my head and cough.<br /><br />He also <a href="http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/News/Speeches/2c3cfa3a-748e-4121-84db-28995cf367da.htm">wants to rid</a> the market of "needless and costly regulations." You know, like the one that says that if you get really sick or pregnant, your insurance company can't dig up your application, look for an undotted "i", and retroactively cancel your policy, making you pay back every dime they ever laid out for claims. What a pain in the ass that rule is!<br /><br /><br /><u><strong>Smears and Associations</strong></u><br /><br /><em>If this kind of thing floats your boat, you should probably stick to voting for Sanjaya, but here goes.<br /><br />Hillary:</em> Has been linked to every factor in the decline of Western Civilization, up to and including those <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_SwD7RveNE">"Head On" commercials.<br /></a><br /><em>McCain:</em> Since the press have given him a free ride, and I possess neither the inclination nor the hypocrisy to dig up the kinds of weak associations that get used against Democrats like Hillary, I'll just go with what little they have reported. Jerry Falwell and<a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=Od-Gx6JmnoU"> Pastor John Hagee</a>, whose endorsements McCain sought and received, both said that America deserved 9/11.<br /><br /><br /><object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/H-CAcdta_8I&amp;hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/H-CAcdta_8I&amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object><br /><br />Then, there's the herbally monikered Rod Parsley, who believes America was founded to destroy Islam, and is McCain's "Spiritual Guide."<br /><br />Back to Hagee for a second. I'm from a long line of Irish, Catholic (I am not practicing), working-class Democrats My Dad was a carpenter. My people are spread all over this country, from the Northeast, throughout the Midwest, and I can tell you fact positive that none of them goes to mass on Sundays to fellowship with The Great Whore. That's Hagee's pet name for the Catholic church.<br /><br />So, let's take that poll again. There's a lot more where that came from, but let's see if this is enough.<br /><br /><a href="#poll14124" /></a><div class="poll" id="poll14124_div"><form method="post" name="poll14124-form" id="poll14124-form" onSubmit="pollVote('14124','/political-machine');return false;"><p>Having read some of John McCain's positions, if Hillary Clinton is not the Democratic nominee:</p><fieldset><label for="poll14124-14125" class="alt"><input type="radio" value="14125" name="poll" id="poll14124-14125">a. Darlene Hooley, who represents the 5th Congressional District. The GOP candidates are <a href="http://www.kevinmannix.com/">Kevin Mannix</a> and <a href="http://ericksonforcongress.org/">Mike Erickson</a>. The <a href="http://rothenbergpoliticalreport.blogspot.com/2008/05/2008-house-ratings.html">Rothenberg Political Report</a> categorizes the race as a "pure tossup." <br /><br />This week brought new accusations that have the distinct smell of smear.<img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/trash1.jpg" alt="" /><br /><br />The <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/metro_south_news/1210650912237870.xml&amp;coll=7">Oregonian reports today</a> that Mannix actually sent a <a href="http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2008/05/KLM%20letter.pdf">direct-mail appeal</a> to 60,000 GOP voters, alleging that Erickson impregnated a woman eight years ago, then paid for her to have an abortion. The Mannix campaign is waving around a 2-year-old e-mail as proof - a message purportedly from a friend of the woman who had an abortion. The campaign sent that e-mail to voters. The Oregonian says the campaign mailing blacked out the last name and e-mail address of the author, identifying her as "Kristi" and her friend as "Tawnya. "<br /><br />"I am convinced that the story is real," Mannix says in the May 12 mailer. "It is important that you, the voter, be aware of this situation. Rarely have I been confronted with such a difficult decision as to whether to proceed with something of this nature. But what is on the line here is the character of the person who will represent you in Congress. <br /><br />"Many people have suggested to me that I allow some "other party" to share this information with you so that I can stand by and watch the situation develop. I believe it is important for me to take personal responsibility for sharing this story."<a href="http://www.portlandtribune.com/news/story.php?story_id=121064920156470100">The Portland Tribune</a> interviewed the woman making the accusations. She first brought up the abortion story in 2006 after receiving an Erickson campaign mailer touting his endorsement by Oregon Right to Life during his first, and unsuccessful, run for the congressional seat.<br /> <br /> "We became pregnant, and not only did he pick me up and drove me to the abortion clinic, he completely encouraged me to do that," the woman told the Tribune. "He withdrew $300 from his bank account" at an ATM on the way to the clinic to pay for the procedure, she said.<br /><br />In a statement released to the Oregonian, Erickson, who emphasizes family values and right-to-life positions, said the "false allegations" are an example of the "desperate smear that Kevin Mannix resorts to." He adds: "These unsubstantiated and untrue allegations are from an e-mail from 2006 that no news media reported at the time. They are just as untrue today as they were then."<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/dirty-politics-in-oregon-republicans-election/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1194370/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/dirty-politics-in-oregon-republicans-election/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/dirty-politics-in-oregon-republicans-election/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>Congress</category><category>House 2008</category><category>House2008</category><category>Kevin Mannix</category><category>KevinMannix</category><category>Mike Erickson</category><category>MikeErickson</category><category>Oregon</category><category>primaries</category><dc:creator>Liza Porteus Viana</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-13T15:19:00+00:00</dc:date></item><item><title>Predicting WV</title><link>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/predicting-wv/</link><guid isPermaLink="true">http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/predicting-wv/</guid><comments>http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/predicting-wv/#comments</comments><description><![CDATA[<p>Filed under: <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/featured-stories/" rel="tag">Featured Stories</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/primaries/" rel="tag">Primaries</a>, <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/category/2008-president/" rel="tag">2008 President</a></p><p><img width="184" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="123" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/news.aol.com/political-machine/media/2008/05/flag-691kb.jpg" alt="" />My <a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/06/predicting-in-and-nc/">prediction</a> two weeks ago on Indiana and North Carolina proved to be total folly, today's foretelling will likely prove to be superfluous.</p>

<p>But it won't matter.</p>
<p> </p><p>It's great that the voting continues and Mountain State Democrats have a chance to be heard, but the debate is essentially over. At this juncture, a rally of support and its demonstration for Clinton is an opportunity for Hillary to exit with some dignity. But that's about it.</p>
<p>Now quitters never win, and Clinton gets kudos for that. But now winning is not within her muster. Obama must fall big - in a way that causes Super Delegates to jump ship en masse - which is not a scenario anywhere rooted in reality.</p>
<p>So...today's win in West Virginia is great for the voted and Hillary Clinton but it's impact is nil.</p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/predicting-wv/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/forward/1194423/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&amp;fc=1&amp;url=http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/predicting-wv/" title="Linking Blogs">Linking&nbsp;Blogs</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/05/13/predicting-wv/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p>]]></description><category>Barack Obama</category><category>BarackObama</category><category>delegates</category><category>Democrats</category><category>election</category><category>Hillary Clinton</category><category>HillaryClinton</category><category>predictions</category><category>president 2008</category><category>President2008</category><category>primaries</category><category>West Virginia</category><category>WestVirginia</category><dc:creator>Greg McNeilly</dc:creator><dc:date>2008-05-13T14:36:00+00:00</dc:date></item></channel></rss>
