Jim Gibbons Is America's Worst Governor

By Ken Layne

Ken Layne's OutrageHave you heard of Governor Jim Gibbons? Unless you live in Nevada, chances are you don't know about this insane doofus and his pathetic, philandering "personal" life -- which is nothing but a very public, very shameful series of alcoholic altercations and battles with his soon-to-be ex-wife Dawn.

The hilarious thing about Gibbons is that he has absolutely no "saving grace." He was never a talented politician like Bill Clinton, he has no legislative achievements, his silly speeches are plagiarized, and his smug stupidity is legendary in the Silver State.

The longtime do-nothing congressman won the Nevada governorship after one of the most dismal campaigns in American History, notable only for the story of his drunken rampage against a cocktail waitress in a Las Vegas parking garage weeks before the election. Dingbat Jim is in the news again, just when the political world needs a laugh.

Just Say It Barack

Obama needs to stop talking like a senator. This is a perfect example:

"You know the former president, who I think all of us have a lot of regard for, has taken his advocacy on behalf of his wife to a level that I think is pretty troubling," Obama told ABC's "Good Morning America" in an interview taped Sunday and set to air Monday. "He continues to make statements that are not supported by the facts - whether it's about my record of opposition to the war in Iraq or our approach to organizing in Las Vegas. This has become a habit, and one of the things that we're gonna have to do is to directly confront Bill Clinton when he's making statements that are not factually accurate."

Which is exactly the nicey nice thing that senators say but goes right over the heads of real folks who wonder why politicians can't say what they mean. Just say it Barack: Bill Clinton lied. Hillary Clinton lied. The Clintons lie. They've been doing it for years. It's not as if this is a not blindingly obvious to anyone. Well, anyone who didn't live under a rock in the nineties.

South Carolina / Nevada GOP Aftermath

McCain wins in a long drawn shootout with Mike Huckabee. Let's run it down by the candidates, worst to first.

Fred Thompson: He's out. he came in a very weak third, barely beating out Mitt Romney by campaigning and shooting the wad while Mitt Romney left the state four days ago and still managed to make a contest for third. No that doesn't look good for Fred and I don't see how he can make it work. He has no delegates, no momentum. I expect him to withdraw now or immediately after Florida.

Mike Huckabee. After Iowa, this was his best shot of the early states, and he couldn't do it. It appears that he, Thompson, and Romney split the anti-McCain vote. As I've pointed out, Huckabee is a flawed candidate in that he has some key skeletons in the Arkansas past, he has not united the conservative wing of the GOP and in fact has united them against him. Talk Radio is no friend of John McCain, but they are an enemy of Mike Huckabee. His road ahead is much tougher, he will not have a state easier to win than this one.

Jackpot: Hillary Wins Nevada/Whither Edwards?

This is a live blog. Although the winner has been projected, I wanted to take time with the analysis while making the results available.

With 90.7% of precincts reporting, Hillary Clinton has won the hotly contested Nevada Democratic Caucuses. What does this mean for the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination? What's next for John Edwards? What the F___ is a caucus, anyway? More to come.

Sen. Hillary Clinton has won the Nevada Democratic caucuses.

The AP is relating that entrance polls show Clinton led among women, older voters and those who prized experience, whereas Obama led among black voters and those who valued a need for chance.

The tally seems to be about:

Clinton: 51%

Obama: 45%

Edwards: 4%

Romney Wins Nevada

By Justin Paulette

Filed Under: Mitt Romney, Primaries, 2008 President

Gov. Mitt Romney has won the Nevada Republican caucuses. He seems to have come away with 55% (as compared to 12% each for McCain and Paul, 8% for Huckabee and Thompson, and 4% for Giuliani).

Of course, this is unsurprising. Romney campaigned extensively in Nevada, while McCain and Huckabee eschewed the state in favor of South Carolina (where they are favored over Romney). Also unsurprising, but perhaps interesting, Romney's Mormon faith seems to have won him 90% of the roughly 1/4 of the Nevada GOP caucus' Mormon electorate.

Romney has now secured primary wins in three states, including Michigan and Wyoming. However, he will likely perform poorly in South Carolina later today. And thus, the GOP nomination will continue to remain an elusive prize for all candidates.

Keeping the tradition of folly alive by making last-minute predictions on these primaries, let's take a run at today's GOP and Democratic Nevada caucuses and the South Carolina Republican primary.

First, today's schedule:

- The GOP South Carolina primary, polls open 7AM-7PM ET
- Nevada GOP caucuses, start at 9AM PT (12PM ET)
- Nevada Dem caucuses, start at 11:30AM PT (2:30PM ET)

First, in Nevada. The easiest prediction to make is the GOP pick. It'll be Mitt Romney followed by John McCain. The latest polling averages show Romney at 25.7%, McCain 20.7%, Huckabee 12.3%, Thompson 10.7%, Paul 7.3%.

Nevada: What Michelle Obama Couldn't Say

By Eric Schulzke

Jan 18th 2008 5:25PM

Filed Under: Barack Obama, 2008 President

Oh, my, Michelle Obama got heckled in Reno, NV for saying she was pleased to be in Ne-VAH-da, not, as it is actually pronounced there, Ne-VAD-da. They want the hard, flat A there, and they began heckling her, good naturedly, it seems.

But here's the dirty little secret that Michelle Obama, nor any other presidential candidate is allowed to say: no one cares how you pronounce Nevada. No one in their right mind wants to go to Nevada. Nevada is a godforsaken moonscape interrupted only by two blips of hellish gambling kitsch patronized by pensioners in polyester.

Clinton Wagers on Gambling

From the LA Times comes a fascinating piece about how Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama view the issue of gambling. Hillary has taken an unabashedly pro-gambling-industry stance, while Obama has cast a more skeptical eye, though has not come out against the practice.

This is potentially a big issue for the Nevada caucuses, seeing as nearly 70% of the state's residents live in the immediate vicinity of Las Vegas, and the political power structure's who's who so often overlaps with gaming interests.
