Amazing Space Images

This image taken by NASA with an infrared telescope in Hawaii shows a large impact on Jupiter's south polar region early Monday. Astronomers say Jupiter was apparently struck by an object, possibly a comet. It happened on the 15th anniversary of another comet strike.

A NASA satellite spots the most distant object seen in the universe to date: a gamma-ray burst that took place 13 billion years ago. Such explosions are believed to result from stars collapsing and forming black holes. The star that ignited the blast belonged to the earliest generations of stars, an astronomer says.
