(cont.) By casually commenting that 'gas prices were already rising' you implicitly affirm that latter idea. What can I say? I thought most of us had a fairly basic understanding of economics, but apparently that is not the case.

I think you missed the point. Sure, gas prices were rising before the hurricane, as they still are now. Even if the shutdown of Louisiana (and Texas) oil rigs and refineries did not affect the supply of gasoline in this country, and thereby the price, certainly it could not be asserted that the influx of federal dollars into the state somehow magicallly affects the price of gasoline.
